weird eyeball(s) loss

So my husband and I are sitting by the pond enjoying an end of day drink and watching the fish eat, when all of a sudden we notice that one of our black moors is missing his left eyeball. It's not only his eyeball though, the whole telescope is sheared off flat. His tail fins seemed a bit ruffled too. He was eating ok and getting around. His twin appears to have a cut?scratch?gash? over his left eyeball too. Now call me crazy... do black moors shed their eyeballs? I think not. Is it a crazy mating ritual where they bash their eyeballs at each other until one pops off in submission? Where is that eyeball anyway? Is the other black moor's eyeball getting ready to blow?

I was looking forward to going out for dinner but I think I may just keep drinking and hope to forget this sight.

My daughter has a huge panda moor. It lost an eye about a year ago and seems to be doing fine. When she feeds the fish, she makes sure she drops some right over him (sinking pellets). Last winter he turned almost all black, this summer he turned almost white and now he is turning red where he used to be black and still has the white he had when he was black and white. He just looks really strange with the one eye. Seems like the eye he has left got bigger after he lost the one eye. It might just look bigger since he doesn't have one on the other side though. Sorry to hear about your fish Roxy!! That seems to be one of the casualties of being a Moor with big eyes. I don't think it is uncommon, not sure what happens to them, but they seem to do fine as long as you make sure they get to eat.

lydia -- the 100+ food Elisa test sounds very interesting. I may give that a try, eventually. I'm convinced that I have quite a few food allergies. I used to throw up when I was given white milk as a child. Never drank any once my mother figured out the cause. Except in elementary school when I was forced by a teacher and I threw up. Funny how I was able to drink chocolate milk, though. I read later (as an adult) that in fact the chocolate in chocolate milk reduces the allergic reaction. Anyway, regarding food allergies, I know I'm sensitive to wheat though I'm not a celiac. I am also sensitive to dairy. (Ask me why I can't give up my goatsmilk yoghurt, this is the last frontier for me, hope to give it up eventually.) I subscribed to the test at http://www.enterolab.com/ which is where I got the results about wheat and dairly. The test was expensive. I think over $300.00. Glad I did it though. Sounds like the Elisa test may give you the same results plus some. This food allergy thing is tricky, I think. One of our dogs now it seems has food allergies. I asked the vet to test and she said that testing for food allergies is not very reliable (for dogs). I wonder if this is true for humans? A food elimination diet was the only thing she could recommend plus eating only a particular type of dog food that was "engineered to have a small enough molecule size so it doesn't trigger the allergic reactions" (her words). I was amazed and am wondering if raw food has "smaller molecules" than cooked food, HA, HA. Perhaps moite's methods that she got from her doctor about measuring her pulse rate may be the best way. I'm going the simple route with this raw food diet (for now) because it meets many other needs also. I had a great day yesterday. I went the whole day without the "wave of tiredness" that comes over me every day after lunch. I hope it wasn't an anomaly. Bad news is that with the raw food diet, there is a "detox phase" initially where some claim that you are ridding your system of toxins. The detox phase can produce acne which is what I just got yesterday. I haven't had a pimple on my face for many years but I have two now. Oh well. If my energy level stays good, I'll have to add that as one more reason why I'm glad I found this diet. I was craving cooked food day before yesterday but managed to get by without it. Hopefully those days will get less in number. This was kind of like craving a cigarette after quitting, as I remember it many years ago. Keep us posted about your food allergies. I'm becoming more and more convinced that for some of us, they are literally killing us or are reducing our quality of life (for some of us) to a very very large extent producing chronic problems and diseases that mainstream medicine doesn't have a clue. In my case, I definitely feel like I've become a guinea pig for trying out different "cures". I'm hoping that raw food will by my answer. I realize that because there is no definite proof, I could be wrong on this but as my DH says, it's gotta be better than being so overweight and hungry all the time. We were killing ourselves eating cooked food so how could this be any worse.

Well...I just told my neuro I want out of the study. He is all but begging me to stay with it, but I dislike the side effects and I have not had any relief from my migraines. a)the first two weeks were completely pain-free and I was in heaven. But then the migraines returned with a vengeance AND my Imitrex no longer worked very well on them!!! Net result= more medicine than ever needed and headaches never seemed to go away completely. b)the frozen forehead is now only partially frozen and my Imitrex has begun to work again. This is 9 weeks post Botox. c)my eyelids look a lot better. I guess the melting polar ice caps in my forehead are responsible. I have to think that if you are one who derives headache relief from the Botox, that might also be waning. d)my neck, which was soooooo sore for nearly 2 months, is now almost back to normal. It was very hard to read and ride my bike because my neck felt like it needed a brace and it hurt a lot. Neuro said next time he would spread around the injections instead of concentrating them in one area (the ones in my neck). e)I told the neuro I wanted to move on and try to find something that worked without compromising the one medication I've got in my arsenal that is effective (Imitrex). What I'd really like to do is not GET migraines. To that end, I have begun a new therapy that is designed to bring my body back into balance and will hopefully give me the bonus of reducing my migraines, which have increased dramatically in the last year. I mean, it doesn't take a brain surgeon (ha ha) to figure out this is likely hormonal, right? I'm 50 and am getting a big increase in migraines? And yet I couldn't get a doctor to do more than prescribe bc pills for me (big no-no with my migraines) or recommend estrogen patches, which I was fairly sure would not be a good treatment for me. I saw two gynos who told me, without any testing, that I needed estrogen, even though I did not fit the symptom profile. The second when said, when I questioned him as to how he knew this, "You're 50!" I finally found a doctor who specializes in women's health (it's all she does) and takes a more naturopathic approach. She ran a bunch of hormone tests for me, including a comprehensive saliva test, and determined that I am very high in estrogen (thank goodness I didn't use the patches!) but extremely low in progesterone. I'm very high in testosterone (ah, THAT'S where the rages are coming from!) and DHEAs (don't know what that is). Low thyroid, too, though it initially appears normal in testing. I have practically no cortisol and my adrenals are wiped out. So, I'm on adrenal rebuilder, a Rx natural progesterone cream that is compounded with pregnenelone (a cortisol precursor or something like that), thyroid stuff and some other supplements that are supposed to help me build back up and feel better. I've only been doing this routine for a week and a half so it's too soon to know how well it will work, but I can tell you that I normally get really bad lower pelvic pain for a week midcycle and I had only a slight twinge this week (doc told me it was the low progesterone at fault). I guess the (sex) hormone balance is easier to address quickly than the adrenal part. I'm told that will take 1-2 years since mine are really shell-shocked. I'm feeling more energy and drive but am still dealing with bursts of anger and periods of foggy thinking. Don't you just love perimenopause?! Apparently, I'm still a ways from menopause, but I have the adrenal/thyroid/hormone imbalance problems that are often part of the whole perimenopause picture. Here's hoping that my migraines back off with this new treatment, but no indication of that so far. However, the hormone problems I have are known to cause migraines so I have high hopes that achieving a balance will bring them under control. Wow!! What an immense amount of arrogance!! This is why self-proclaimed 'experts' are usually to be avoided or at the very least, their info approached with a large degree of caution. You are so wrapped up in you own self importance to completely ignore what I might have posted. If you care (or even bother) to read more carefully, I did acknowledge the presence of psyllids in my very first post. I am also a practicing consulting horticulturists - not at all an "Internet only" person - and I am actively engaged on a daily basis diagnosing plant issues. I do this for a living!! I am very familiar with boxwood - apparently much more so than you as the self proclaimed expert are - and have encountered all manner of boxwood issues. If.....and I mean if.....leafminers are present, they are not present in any large numbers or the damage would be far more obvious.....as it is with the mites. "You started arguing without possessing much love and experience with boxwood. That`s your big issue. Be careful on such discussion because you can meet real professional . I am not going to teach you for free here and maintain this discussion." Again, wow!! You have no idea what experience or knowledge I might have with this plant or just how much of a professional I might be. I have openly shared my background and experience whereas you just claim yours with nothing to substantiate. And what is the title of this book you supposedly authored?? Perhaps it is the type of scientific research and detailed plant morphology that we could all benefit from. Or maybe it is just another unsubstantiated bold Internet claim...... btw, I have already been taught by a lot of very skilled academic minds. I have an unusual problem this year that has puzzled me. I grow from seed, and my stock (Matthiola), larkspur, and others will not grow. They are in a bed that has very good amended soil, gets sun, and have been watered consistently. They are all still 2" high. Stock has been in the ground over a month. Even my seedlings in pots are slow, but they are growing more than the ones in that bed. We did have very cool weather, and my microclimate at my house is cool. You can literally feel the temperature drop a few degrees driving down our driveway. I have been wondering if it was low soil temp, or if Asian jumping worms actually did eat every bit of organic matter in the soil and the plants have nothing. But, even basic potting soil has practically no nutrients (or so I thought), so shouldn't they show some growth? The poppy seeds in that bed are growing (as are some weeds). The only seeds that are really growing are echinacea (they hardly count since they seem to grow regardless), 4:00s, salvia, Sweet Wm Catchly, and Clarkia (and others that aren't coming to mind right now). I am just confused. The established perennials in that bed look fantastic, but it's possible they are growing from stored up nutrients in their roots. Can you tell how much i've been trying to figure this out? Makes no sense to me.

Sounds to me either they were hurt during a spawning frenzy or you've got a predator possibly a cat going after them.

Well, to update you - My black Moor lost his 2nd eyeball sometime b/t this post and Sat morning. I separated him from the others, gave him antibiotics, but he was dead by Sunday afternoon.
Last night my husband and I were having a drink by the pond and the one remaining black moor swam by... yes, you guessed it.... missing his left eye.
This is like Equus w/out the horses... I am disturbed. I didn't ck him this morning, I have enough problems at work w/out having another no eyed fish stamped on my brain.

What other fish do you have in your pond? Its most likely another fish snatching the eyeballs. This will happen with fish in aquariums too. The moor might have initially injured the first eye and another fish started picking at him.
Blind fish will usually manage o.k. and learn to adapt. I had a blind Ryunkin but he was in an aquarium in the house. He adapted but eventually died.

We have 4 shubunkins, 3 fancy goldfish, now 1 black moor, an unidentified offspring that looks like a black shubunkin, an albino catfish that never comes out from behind his canna lily, and 2 sucker fish that I saw in Petsmart but never since. Don't you think it's a bit odd that the other black moor is now missing his eye? And both were very healthy fish - I've never seen any of my fish pick on any others- not that I have the nanny cam going or anything, but I do hang around and observe.
Well the remaining moor is still eating and looks ok w/ his one eye, so hopefully he'll make it.

Maybe remove your Moore now and put him in a hospital tank with antibiotics. The eye wound may become infected.

Keeping the fish from infection is important. If it survives, it will do fine as a blind fish. I have a large fantail goldfish with cataracts. She is the fattest fish in the pond. They learn to graze the bottom.

It is common for Moors and other fish with bubble eyes to be injured in ponds or mixed species aquariums.

It is most likely another one of your fish doing the deed. Probably the catfish or pleco if that is what your "sucker fish" is. Both are known to attack goldfish.

Even if other fish didn't pick on them, they are easily injured on rocks etc. during spawning and feeding frenzies.

I currently have a black moor in which I am almost positive his eyes are about to fall off. He had an infection in his eyes for the past month which caused both of his eyes to grow massively...it even look like some kind of tumor underneath his eyes? It looks as though his eyes grew so far out that there was an orange tumor like growth busting out from behind his eyes...I dont know of any other way to explain it. He had a small eye infection in the past and I treated it with maracyn-2 and it worked beautifully. This time when I tried Maracyn 2 it didnt work at all...infact I think it made his eyes worse. The outside sheet of his eyes became white and bloody. Poor little guy couldnt (and still cant see) He was acting lethargic, just kinda hangin out at the bottom of the tank...not being so active. After I explained what happened to my local fish store, they recommened some tetracycline... It turned my water so yellow but my fish is looking so much better! The inflamation in his eyes went down, its as if his eyes were big ballons and they deflated. He has scab-like things on his eyes now, and Im almost positive he cant see...but he swims around now, hes much more active, when he senses food around him he will just start pickin at the gravel until he gets some...So i can tell just by his body activity that he is much better.. however since his eyes deflated, it looks as though they are going to fall off...theyre still attached but they dont look functional at all....So in the end it seems to be ok..Id rather have a blind fish than a dead fish, and Ive had him since he was a baby! I cant give up on him. The only bad side to this story is his female counterpart caught the infection in one of her eyes (while the tank was being treated with tetracycline) I was told to treat ALL the fish..

Oh yea, is it ok to put aquarium salt everyday whenever your fish are sick? I know salt helps fight infection.

He died the next day =( he started swimming vertically and then he died. WAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh =(

Sorry your fishy died. The bubble eyed and/or fat bodied fancy goldfishes are so fragile.

I have a fan tail goldfish who just lost both his eyes. He is an ordinary goldfish-nothing fancy. I woke up one morning and one of his eyes was missing, the other was fine. Two days later the other one is gone. There is only one other fish in the tank and they have lived together for five years, so I don't think the other one is picking on him. Besides the two large gaping holes in his head, he seems perfectly fine. It doesn't seem to bother him that he can't see. And the strange thing is the wholes are clean, they didn't even bleed- like both eyes just fell out. Does any one know what could cause this? I'm sure he hasn't run into anything, theres nothing that sharp in the tank. Do goldfishes eyes fall out when they get old??

I sure hope not!!! I have given up on the bubble eyed fish, but I have lots of fancy goldies, calicos, Orandas and just can't imagine them with no eyes. I lost all my moors when I introduced Bluegills to the pond. Worst thing I ever did!!! But I just love my Orandas, my daughter and grandkids think they are ugly. But when I look them in the eyes, they remind me of little lambs with such sweet innocent faces. I have read that Ryukins will suck the eyes out of fish when they get really large. Guess I'll go Bluegill fishing again. Glenda
