gaultheria procumbens as temporary houseplant

I got a bunch of these half price at an after xmas sale. They were being sold as holiday houseplants. I thought I could keep them going until spring and plant them out. This is a bit more complicated than it first appeared.
They are in a peat mix and roots fill the pot. Not root bound yet, but on the verge. The soil is so root filled that the only way to get them soaked is to remove from pots and soak in the dishpan of water.
So they need to be repotted. I'm going to use a gritty soil mix for better drainage and root development.
What suggestions do you have?
Am I correct in assuming these guys shouldn't go outside until spring? Obviously, they are very hardy, but wouldn't I still need to acclimate them in spring and plant then?
I'm assuming they came from a greenhouse.
