No, it's a Zone 7 rose like most chinas. It has tea like flowers and nasty thorns. It can sprawl if you have the climbing form. It has problems with powdery mildew in the winter. You might want to try Slater's Crimson or Louis Phillipe, a much hardier rose.

A beautiful rose, with fish hook like thorns that loves a warm climate. It laughs off Texas summer heat and asks ... "is that all ya got?"

You'll be fine with it. It is much tougher than advertised and although it will never get as large as it will in say, Alabama, it will be just fine. They grow it at Gage park in Topeka Kansas.

It survives zone 6b with no problem. No mildew here, but will get BS.

Mulch it extra heavy in the fall. Get own root. Let us know how it does- only one way to find out if it will survive in your garden.

I know someone who grows it in zone 6 (I've seen it growing in their garden) and as Jean says, it won't get as large but it will do fine.

redsox, I just planted one from a 3-gallon pot this past Saturday. I hope mine doesn't get too huge, but at least I can prune a China to a reasonable size... I think. Check with you this time next year, and we'll see which is bigger. LOL

Hmmm...you live in Florida. I don't want to put any money on mine being bigger.

I'm reluctant to comment as mine is in it's second year. It survived the winter and is starting to leaf out. I don't know about the size since mine was pruned by rabbits.

No challenge intended, redsox. No doubt mine will be bigger, I guess, but I was wondering by how much. You're summers are hot - maybe with temps higher than mine - but not as long. We'll be well into the 80's next month. I was just interested in seeing what a season of growth brings in Kentucky and in Florida. When your cool temps arrive, that will be the finish line. So perhaps saying we'll check back this time next year was wrong. You have to deal with freezing winter which may set you back to zero. But what will your rebound be like with a mature root system in the ground. I don't know the answer. Never having grown roses up north, I'm always surprised to see the small stature of roses that must deal with severe winters. If I were living and growing roses up where you are, I think I would devise a bubble for each bush - a mini-greenhouse. I don't think I could bear having my beautiful plants knocked back to the ground every year. I'd probably find another hobby. So I take my hat off to all you super strong rose gardeners in our northern climes. You are tough and so are your plants.

I guess we'll see how tough Cramoisi Superieur is.

I was just thinking of ordering this rose from Chamblee's to replace my Don Juan. Is it a fast grower by any chance? I need another red that "laughs at Dallas heat". :)

I'm new to antiques and still feeling my way around these beautiful roses.

Hey Denise, I think Louis Phillipe maybe grows a bit faster.
You also might, if you want some real size, take a look at Mutabilis.

Well, I have seen it only as a bush. Others may know more.
Mutabilis, OTOH, can grow as a climber, and has the advantage of being very colorful.
There is a Cl. version of Cramoisi, of course.

My LP is now 9 or 10 feet.

I think I got it from Chamblees, own root and plonked in the ground about 5 years ago. In it's second year it produced 15! flushes. Wonderful cherry red, wonderful fragrance! Nearly thornless and nearly disease free in central Florida. Not for cutting though. Shatters in about 4 minutes though a shallow bowl full will last through a dinner party. A great one for near the doorway.

It has not sent up long canes. It does send out a new long arm from the lower canes and then a new long arm from those second tier canes and so on.

Jeri--I'd like it to cover and sprawl over this fence.

dmg, The Cl Cramoisi I saw was at Vintage, and as I recall it, it would do exactly what you want. I'd go for it!

I agree Mutabilis grows much faster and is fairly bullet proof here. Louis Phillipe grows great also and in semi shade.

Which Louis Phillipe are you referring to--the china? HMF lists several varieties of Louis Phillipe.

Is it a climber or could it be trained?

Apparently, there is, or was, a Climbing form but I've never seen it, or a picture of it.
LP as I have seen it is a big, graceful BUSH.
It seems to have no inclination to produce long, climbing canes.
