Lotus vs. other water plants question!

Hi folks!

I started a new job a few months ago and between that and my computer blowing up, I've not had much time to post!

I just wanted to check in and say hello and thank everyone for the help I have gotten here.

I will post some pictures of my pond this fall, when things finally settle down. Currently, I have a Battle Royale going on between a Chawan Basu lotus, water hyacinth, cattails, and a hardy water lilly. So far, it seems that the lotus is winning the fight!!!!

Good news on your lotus. My weeds seem to be winning the fight here! haha
Actually, my lotus bog is doing well. Its had about 6 blossoms so far, and they are something like 5-6' tall!
I'll probably hear a tapping on my window soon, and it will be a runner.
When did you get the Chawan Basu?
My American lotus hasn't put up a single blossom since I repotted it this spring. Maybe its mad at me because I put it in a container instead of its own bog.
I hope your new job is going well. Write when you can!

I had so much fun learing about lotus through posts and experiments last year so this year I decided to try something.

I placed 4 tubs at the bottom of a channel in middle of the pond and filled each one with dirt on one side only. I then guided a runner from the original into the next pot and so on.

So now it has spread all the way down the middle of the pond and then escaped down into the middle of the deep part. It fought it's way through the hyacinth bog and then went after the water lilly.

I work in a sushi place now and they have lotus on the menu!!!!! I was hoping to get enough leaves to be able to serve some dishes on them, but I couldn't get them to preserve well enough. I bet there are tricks to that if someone can help me!

That's about it for now. I will post one picture of the bustubs and then hopefully I can find a good one of the whole pond!

There are a lot of other things I always think about but forget when I am sitting down on the computer. Hope everyone is doing well and Cath did your lotus bloom at all?

Hi backyardmama, Yes, I have pickerel. I put it on one of those black milk crates and it does great. I have it in something like a 3 gallon pot, and I have to thin it every year. Its pretty aggressive. I'm afraid I'm not very knowledgeable about the various skimmers and filters. I've always just used a little box filter around my pumps. That's too bad that your's was missing those pieces. One filter box I bought once was missing a part too. Somebody in quality control is asleep on the job! Just be sure if you try to fix it yourself, that you don't obstruct any water flow, where the correct missing piece was supposed to go. I forget......why do you need to change your pond to a stocktank? I've actually never had anything other than preforms and stocktanks. I'd be so afraid of punctures! One thing I did to the stocktank, once I got it home, was to tighten up that drain plug as tight as possible, and then caulk around it too. Then let the caulk sit about day, to dry, and then it goes in the ground. oops....can't remember if your putting your's inground or above ground. If it above ground, you can just keep your eye on the drain plug, and watch for leaking. I've found that they leak a little to start with, then stop. Yep........lotus. They are sooooooo aggressive. In fact, when I used to plant one in a 7 gallon pot and put it in a larger stocktank, I would have to thin it every 2 years. When I would dump it out, there would be no soil at all.......just roots. I had a relative who put in 2 big ponds and he added lotus. He really regretted it when both of them had the lotus take over everything. I've heard about cutting off the stem under water, but I'm thinking with so many of them, a lot would surely survive. I fear you (or your community) will have to pull them out. They are such a beautiful plant/flower, but they just don't know when to quit. And every year you'll have all those dead leaves and seed pods in the pond. The pond might start getting a bit unhealthy. Good luck!
