Growing lilies from seeds?

Can anyone tell me if the seed pods from any lily can be grown; and, if so.....directions please. TIA Fly

'Any lily' covers way too much territory. Germination requirements vary, may need moist chill or warm moist, followed by cold moist, followed by warm moist again - and may take anywhere from 2 weeks to over a year depending on which lily.

Time consuming, these may take as long as 18 months to germinate and will germinate erratically, meaning not all seedlings will appear at the same time. Surface sow then top pot with some grit, expose the seed pot to a range of temperatures by sowing outdoors in a cold frame. You can also alternate 12 weeks of moist cold in your refrigerator with 12 weeks at room temp, recycling until germination begins. Rock Garden Society adds this note - "dry storage of seed for 6 months is fatal, grow seedlings at cool temperature, leave in pot for 2 years". If you were looking for flowers sooner than 4 years from now, Brent and Becky's has the bulbs reasonably priced for Fall shipment (- as comparison, 3 blooming bulbs in a pot early this Spring were selling for $3.99 here when I bought two pots). Exactly! We're talking about the same lily. I've let the seeds both fall and plant themselves naturally and planted in pots for redistribution elsewhere in the gardens. I see you've got enough bulbils to pick off (now is fine, they're ready) to experiment both ways. Although they're very hardy, when I plant some in pots I bury the pot in the ground in an out of the way place - mainly just to keep track of them until they're ready to transplant. When the bulbils fall naturally around the mother plant, they will eventually form a cluster which makes for a spectacular blooming show. The only thing problematic with transplanting them in the first growing season is they're fragile and you'll probably end up breaking the bulb away from the new leaf sprout - the little bit of foliage is needed for the bulb to replenish itself for the next season. So, I've just left them potted until the second or third year when they're good and strong enough to handle. Being crowded in even a relatively small pot doesn't hurt them. If you're really new to lilies - you know that late in the fall when the stalk of the lily pictured above has become yellow/brown and woody you can cut it down at ground level or just slightly above - the yellowing/browning means it has done its job of feeding the bulb for next season's growth.

If you get one of those polystyrene boxes used for shipping grapes that are about three inches deep, about 12 wide x 16 long you can add extra holes - about as fat as a finger - and then put in around an inch of potting medium over the bottom. Mark out a grid pattern so you end up with three across and four down the length - 12 seedlings in all. You can do a row and fill as you go. Fill up to nearly the brim of the box and water lightly. You can add about half a measure of sharp grit to four measures of potting mix. Or you can plant your seedlings individually into 6" pots at this stage. Later they will need something larger, however. Lilies aren't partial to superphosphate. They get brown bits on their leaves from the fluoride. Many of the lilies have a set of basal roots which store the food for them to get started in the new season. Once they get growing, though, they form stem roots ABOVE the bulb. That's why they get planted quite deeply. It's those roots that support the stem, leaves and buds. When they come up next year you can use a sparing amount of slow release fertiliser to help them grow on and form bigger bulbs. You might not see flowers for three years. As the bulbs get larger you might want to plant them out into a special area free of perennial weeds. They like the edges of deciduous shrubberies/woodland for the dappled light and leaf mould but they don't like to compete with surface roots from trees such as maples.

Hello, I live in Sweden and couldn't make a post in your "Seed exchange" forum. This is my "story" and why i post here... I am looking for all different kind of seeds that are exotic/tropical or unusal (for me that lives in Sweden, almost everything is exotic/tropical/unusal though). Also, seeds for the garden (flowers) are of interest so i might get a nice flowering garden next year. I am home, sick, since a year back and are slowly recovering and one of few things i can do, is to sow seeds and see them grow...a nice hobby and therapy. I really love to do it, but so far, i have only some "easy to get" plants one can buy in flowershops here in Sweden and also my "small" African violet collection. Monstera, Philodendron, Passiflora and Jasmine are some i would love to try from seed though. Different kind of cactus/succulents would be nice to try also...and...hmm, can one grow lilies from seeds?...See, the more one think, the bigger the list on what one want. I don't have any seeds for trade though but i pay for postage of course (if you use paypal that is)if anyone want to send to me. Morz8 It's a blackberry lily but I'd also like to know if you can grow a "stella dora or any "named" lily" or "unknown lily" from the seed pods that develop after the blossom disappears.
Pickwick, thanks for the links, I'll check them out.
My blackberry lily has so many seed pods on it and it's my first year growing and someone also told (after the fact) that I should have snapped off the seed pods or the blossom after it bloomed so all the energy goes into the plant and not into making the seed pods. I'm new at this and I appreciate everyone's response. Thanks!

good grief... The reason I frown upon colloquial names... It is a member of the Iridaceae ...please excuse...therefore you should refer to its specific propagation requirements .

Blackberry lily are pretty straightforward and will self sow here (Z8) - Belamcanda chinensis , Surface sow at 68ÂºF, keep moist, germination slow

You can sow the seeds of daylily like Stella and may get some interesting flowers, but they don't come true to the parent from seed. Daylily - Hemerocallis hybrids, liliasphodelus, middendorffii, and minor , Sow under very thin cover (some light beneficial to germination) at 41ÂºF , germination irregular, often several months

Wow! You people really know your stuff! I'm just a beginner and I can't even begin to speak your language.
I've heard that you don't get a true flower from the seeds so I've wondered why on the seed forum people are asking for the seeds from lilies. hmmmmmmm I'll gladly give them away then; but since you don't get a true flower, I don't think I'd want to try it or even bother with it.
