Phlox paniculata - (garden phlox) from seed?

Hi does phlox paniculata (hybrids etc.) produce seed? Is the seed viable or sterile? Is there any special germination process? Is it hard? I love my phlox and am a good seed starter and would love to try some from seed. I am aware that most hybrids won't come true but that's not a huge concern. If I want a truly "true" variety I'll just buy that one. But a bunch of pretty variants are fine. Any tips / info? Thanks. :)

Phlox x arendsii, and paniculata , Sow at 18-22ÂºC (64-71ÂºF) for 2-4 wks, move to -4 to +4ÂºC (24-39ÂºF) for 4-6 wks, move to 5-12ÂºC (41-53ÂºF) for germination

Several years ago, a white with lavender/rose center flower came up along side my Phlox David. I've seen pictures of Phlox Delta Snow and this looks exactly like it. I separated it from my clump of David and have been growing it in it's own spot for 5 years now. I had thought it might be a seedling from David, but it seems more likely that it's a "sport." Any seedlings from David and my other garden phlox varieties are a pinkish purple, and all look the same. I also have a seedling here from Eva Cullum that is a bright lipsick pink. It's in it's own area of the garden and has grown well over the years. Neither of these plants has variegated leaves though. Linda

Phlox paniculata? I'm not seeing ripening seeds

I collect seeds from several phlox. They take a while to ripen but when the seed shell is a light yellow/brown they are ready and will pop open and seeds fall out. There are usually 3 or 4 dark brown seeds in each. Not all the seeds ripen at the same time so need to check often. 'David' is a favorite of mine. Phlox are easily divided in the spring as I thin the bed to allow air flow around established plants. I believe one can also take cuttings in the spring.

Hi Kimka...while I can't tell you what the seeds look like, I can tell you that my Nora Leigh has self-seeded all around itself in my garden. The flower is the same - however, the leaves have never been varigated from the self-seeded plants. Just thought I'd let you know.

Winter sowing phlox is the way to go.

My phlox self-sows freely and I see new young seedlings coming up every spring. But I let the flowers go to seed and sometimes leave the dried seed heads on the plants all winter. If you already have phlox growing in your garden and you didn't deadhead, look around next spring for small seedlings within about 2' of the parent plants.

You have to be careful with starting phlox from seed because the seedlings will revert to the species, which is a muddy purple color. A better way to propagate is division in the spring.
