How do I properly care for this screen of evergreens?

This is my first season in a new house ... the grounds were beautifully planted 12 years ago, but not (well) tended for the last 5-6. I've thinned many of the barberries and boxwoods to encourage air circulation and to remove dead branches ... but I'm not sure how to properly care for these evergreens (forgive me if I don't now their name). The foliage exposed to the sun is green, but there's little growth underneath a thin canopy of foliage and browning here and there.

the juniper with the blight.. or winter damage.. should probably go .... its not worth the effort ...

there is a conifer forum.. not all evergreens are conifers... things are done differently with different types ...

i suggest pix of individual plants.. to get proper IDs ... in the tree forum.. the conifer forum.. the shrub forum.. and as a last option the name that plant forum .... so you can learn about every individual one..

regardless.. simply maintain the mulch.. keep out the weeds. and enjoy..

as they are all mature plants.. they need ABSOLUTELY NOTHING .... i mean nothing... which is proved by the neglect for the last 6 years.. and how nice it looks

i see a rhododendron flowering.. a barberry ... a pine .. a spruce ...

most IDs are accomplished with a pic of the bark.. a leaf.. and cones or seed pods if any ...

looks like you might have rabbit damage also.. if those are all juniper.. i would plan on getting on with life.. and putting something better in there...

the hardest lesson for a new home owner to learn.. in the garden.. is to get rid of the prior owners problems. ... trust me... been there done that

Thanks, Ken, for the advice. There are actually about 6 of these 'junipers' in that picture and, you're right, removing them would be a heartbreaking decision for me. The lack of growth at the bottom of the bushes was caused (in my opinion) by the ground ivy I just removed which was 18" thick under these bushes and had grown throughout the foliage and up into the trees (I would guess I removed about 5 cubic yards of it in total). There is a single rabbit in the yard, but I've never seen him munching on any of this. Is there anyway to encourage foliage nearer the ground than what is shown in these photos?

Include a photo or give some dimensions of the whole yard for a better answer. It also depends on how much traffic and at what speeds people drive on this side road. If it is a short cul-de-sac, and people have such a short distance to get to their own house that they tend to slow down, the sight lines can be much less. It also depends on how much of your inside the screen/private yard space you need to keep to make it look right from the house. Your greatest risk is that you can't see a pedestrian or dog approaching the driveway, so I'd think you would want at least 15 feet clear of the curb. Cars coming by you can usually hear, it is people,kids and animals that are of more concern. In any case, you will hopefully not be having to constantly back out of your drive onto the street, which is even more dangerous for hitting unseen things. You also don't say how high a screen you intend, as this will make a difference too.

I see...quite the setup you have there. I still use gravity thru an open ended hose or a water can like the galvanized one pictured above, or buckets when I am using ACT. I haven't yet hooked up my modified soaker hoses because we have been getting enuff rain. What kind of pump is that? I was looking for a pump to move water from some closed barrels I have. Looks like that pump would work. Currently I am using a sump pump to move the water but first I have to dump the water into a garbage can with the sump pump in it. When I first started I was using a bucket brigade to move the water closer to the garden. Hey it saves on gym membership... I still use buckets with holes in them to water some beds. I think it soaks deeper and puts the water where I want it. This method also gives me a real good idea just how much water the plants are getting. Tell me more about the camp trailer pump you mentioned? With a pressure switch? Advantages? Thanks, Gumby_CT

You can keep them in pots forever, but the pots will get bigger in time. When a plant is top heavy and blows over constantly you need to pot up or sink another same size plastic pot in the ground and set it in. When a plumeria becomes root bound, you can cut an inch or two around the inside of the pot, remove the old roots and restart the plant in fresh soil mix. This is best done in February as the plant prepares to exit dormancy. Generally, you can go several years in a one gallon black plastic pot (no clay pots unless glazed inside) or a size of 18-24". The five gallon will go to 4-5' if balanced. A 7 or 15 gal you begin to branch prune or stem prune and then root prune every 2-5 years. These are general guidelines and depend on the growth rates, size and balance of growth. I stake and tie my plants and branches to control the balance and force plants more up than out. I recommend you put your plant outside as long as the evening temperatures are averaging 60. You can put your plant outside in the day and bring inside in the night for most of the year in SoCal. I have several hundred plants so I just leave them outside all year with some rare frost damage in Dec-Feb once in awhile (2007 was harsh). Since your plant probably has roots, drench water it (pour water in until it is flowing out the bottom) Then let it dry out for several days. Go to home depot and get some superthrive (in indoor plant area) and look for a cheap water meter (also at most nurseries) Water when meter reads dry. Add a few drops of ST to each watering and mist your leaves in the morning with a spray bottle. Don't freak when lower leaves turn yellow. pick off. By Nov/Dec your plant will drop all leaves and go dormant (little or no water needed until Mar. Start watering in March and pick up some fertilizer (you will find a wide variety of opinions here including epsoms salts, sulpo mag, spray n grow, calcium products, various formulas, etc) Search this forum and read up. Indoors, in that corner, in a presumably temp-controlled home (meaning you don't live in over 90* indoor temps) and in the original Lowes' soil it came in....I'd be surprised if you could water once a month. Mine are indoors in a not too bright room in basically pebbles and rocks without any soil and I water mine about once every two weeks. If you keep it in that pot with that soil, feel the soil at the bottom of the pot through the drainage hole and when THAT is dry--water. You should read the link Al attached above. If you only have one plant, it may not be feasible for you to make your own mix, but if you grasp the concept of what he is talking about, it's simple to find small amounts as replacements to recreate something similar, and even in the worst case, it would be better than the soil it's in. If so, then that Sans may very well be with you for the next 20 years. Whatever you do, I would not keep it in that soil. It's very rare that a big box store has something in even half decent soil. i love Lati's idea of taking the label back to the store and demanding a replacement! LOL I have no idea why you kept the label, haha, but since you have it, you could kick and scream. Can you record it while you do it, though? It would totally make my day. ;-)

it was caused by the ivy shading out needles that need sunlight ..

LISTEN TO ME .... i tried .. for 5 years to keep.. for the history of my first house.. all these cool old plants ... what a freakin nightmare.. and the happiest day of my life in that house was when i got rid of all the problems the prior owner left me ... YOU HAVE TO GET PAST THE EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT TO THOSE PLANTS ..

check the link.. you emotionally avoided my comment that they are diseased.. ergo .. they are not going to grow vigorously and re-green the bottom part ...

we are on a pix posting crusade over in the conifer forum.. there ought to be hundreds of plants to get emotionally attached to, that are not diseased..
