Help with selecting shrubs or trees?
Comments (2)Where do you live? Zone8B tells me only that it's kinda warm. The USDA Zones put Phoenix AZ and Tampa FL in the same climate zone ... it only considers winter lows, summer highs....See MoreHelp needed identifying hedge shrub
Comments (1)It's Box - Buxus. It can take hard pruning. If branches snap when bent they are dead. It roots easily from cuttings if you want to have a safety net while you renovate this old specimen....See Morehelp with shrub hedges
Comments (15)Birds eat as many bugs as they do berries, so don't think that you help them by only planting woody plants that have fruit. Branch out to support warblers and other birds that eat bugs primarily. I assume you still have oaks around, so that will help attract tasty bugs. Here is a good chart of eastern native plants that support Lepidoptera (egg laying moths and butterflies). Birds love caterpillars. Comments (2)Mary, I think you can create a lovely shrub/tree line that will require little or no pruning. I would encourage you to look at plants that are native to Nebraska, since those will the easy to care for. The website noted below should help. You mention that the area is facing east...how much sun will the various shrubs or trees be getting? Maybe the best way to start is with pencil and paper. The trees you mention sound great and you absolutely don't need to have symetrical plantings. You probably do want to create some sort of balance with repetition of plants and forms, but you can be relaxed about it. Absolutely do consider adding some conifers, however. Many are very attractive to birds, especially in the winter. Patty Here is a link that might be useful: Nebraska Arboretum...See Morefloral_uk z.8/9 SW UK
