Hybrid perpetuals (portlandias) in Z10?

Has anyone out there had success with hybrid perpetuals in Z10?

Just wondering if it would be worth while to give them a try here.

Yes, but rebloom is better where its cooler. Some do better than others in warmer situations.

Grandmother's Hat is one that seems to do well in most places, although in my very hot and dry-summer garden the flowers were so fleeting that I had to give it up and planted Le Vesuve in its place, which seems to love the heat.

My big "Aha!" moment in gardening came a few years ago, thanks to a lovely garden at the end of my street. It was planted before my husband and I moved here, by two avid and talented gardeners who tended it for years. When we came to this street, that couple had moved and the house had been sold to a woman who, surprisingly, had no interest in the garden. I say "surprisingly" because the garden takes up the entire property. Needless to say, the garden didn't get tended. But after a couple of years of watching it grow under the hand of neglect, I realized what a brilliant garden it actually was. There was not only something for every season, and the garden had great "bones", but the plants bloomed/fruited reliably, were healthy and vigorous. The reason was that the two original gardeners chose reliable, healthy and hardy plants...including over twenty-six different roses. (Incidentally, and as an aside, why are most of the hardy roses for Canada pink? Or a variation of pink? I'd love to know the science behind that.) For me, at least, it was a living lesson in the wisdom and beauty of accepting the "limitations" of climate, and as a result, enjoying a measure of success in the garden. Could the garden have done better if the second owner had tended it? Of course. I'm sure some of the plants needed a little extra TLC. I don't think any garden ever outgrows its need for a steward of creation. But because the plants were chosen carefully, the garden was reliable. All that to say that I've learned the value of asking questions on this forum and from others, and heeding the advice and knowledge of people with experience. I appreciate rosarians who will say, "Don't plant that in your zone! ;0)", and even more those who say, "Plant this instead." Do I push my zone sometimes? Sure. But for the most part I'm really happy for the input. I hope this is "on topic", though I think there's a lot of topics covered here! ;0) And, thanks to all who have answered my myriad questions! Esther, I am not a rose expert, but have gotten very into them and am trying to someday become one...but I only have about 4 years experience growing them. I have had some luck growing clippings, and was able to grow my Grandmothers rose, which she had in her garden, from a clipping my aunt sent me from Kansas...the plant started off in Nebraska a long time ago. A couple HT's that I like, and are now not showing blackspot anymore are Baron Edmund de Rothschild and Moonstone. They are now three years old in my garden, and are a lot stronger plants, that have beautiful blooms. I notice the Hybrid Perpetuals and Bourbins seem to grow well and fast also. A couple other roses that seem to grow well for me are Lexy, Gentle Hermione, General Schablikine and Union Redwood Cemetary, plus Henri Matisse. I am going to plant a lot of old Teas this year, am excited to see how they do. Good luck! - Steve

Floribundas are fine. Some are more disease-susceptible than others, but they should all grow and flower well. Hybrid Perpetuals -- another matter altogether. They'll all require regular spraying for blackspot. I've never found a resistant one. And some of them will be only once-blooming, even though they repeat elsewhere. For good repeaters in Florida summer heat, I'd recommend 'Paul Neyron', 'Baronne Prevost' 'Frau Karl Druschki' (give her space -- she's huge) and 'Reine des Violettes', which may not repeat the first year, but with maturity, should repeat. We had a handful of flowers on ours today, I noticed. Oh, 'Marchesa Boccella', a.k.a. 'Jacques Cartier', and variously classified as a HP or a Portland, is a good repeater in the heat as well. Again, he'll need spraying for blackspot.

Another vote here for Dortmund. In Dortmund, you will get the colour, vigour, disease resistance and repeat flowering that you are looking for. But it's not great on fragrance (my nose says no fragrance at all). You will still need to prune (you won't find any climber out there that looks good without pruning). I am a big fan of Parade. But not for it's disease resistance. It's leaves stay healthy until late July, when black spots start to bite. How badly affected it is depends on the weather condition and the disease pressure in the area. On summers with frequent rainy day/warm day cycles, it can be badly affected. I usually don't mind this a bit, because it stays completely unscathed during it's biggest display, usually June through to early July. This year has been an excellent year for the health of this rose - it is barely touched by blackspot - as of yesterday. If strong colors against a pale background is important to you, my suggestion is Dortmund over Parade. The pale reverse of Parade's petals which works so well against darker backgrounds, may not work well against a pale background.

Ingrid's point is well-taken ... Zone 10 is too wide a category.

WHERE in Zone 10 would be more helpful. Florida? California? Coastal? Inland?

See, Ingrid is inland almost to desert.
I am in Camarillo -- Coastal Ventura County, Southern California.
What works for her doesn't work for me, and vice-versa.

I'm down here in FL, on quick-draining, quick-drying sand, too much rain in summer, almost no rain in winter.

Hi Jeri- you're absolutely right about the zone not being nearly enough info- I moved from Z10Fl to Z10Fl, and the conditions here are so different that I had to re-learn how to garden all over again! Where I used to live, we had more rain and no sand. It doesn't sound like much, but it makes all the difference.

Sure does.

And so I'll say that I am in Sunset Z23-24 -- CA.

HERE, we do best with "Warm-Climate" roses -- the Teas and Chinas, along with Noisettes, Poly-Teas and the like.

I can grow Hybrid Perpetuals, but not (for the most part) very well. They tend to be troubled by powdery mildew, rust, and in some cases botrytis. Oh, heck -- really also downy mildew, anthracnose, and cercospora.

The one exception would be "Grandmother's Hat," which is bulletproof here, but will blackspot where that is a problem (which it is not, here).

I can grow Bourbons, but they have all the disease problems which plague HPs -- only to a greater degree.

Ingrid, by contrast, does well with all of the things I can't grow.

My dad lived in Hollywood (FL) and grew a few OGR's very well. Rose de Rischt (Portland), Pink Pet, Green Rose (China), Souv de la Malmaison (Bourbon), Baronne Prevost (HP). I grafted Rose de Rischt and Baronne Prevost onto fortuniana root stock for him. We got Souv de la Malmaison on fortuniana from Nelson Roses (good web site) and Pink Pet & Green Rose were on root in large deco pots with good potting soil. I've heard some other HP do well in S. FL.

Ken-n.ga.mts- thanks for your reply. Useful info- I'm ordering Rose de Rescht, B. Prevost, for sure, and keeping them in pots.

I had B.Prevost, and lost it when I took it out of the pot and put it in the ground. It was doing very well in the pot.
