What do you do for a living?

This question usually gets quite a response and gets people here to know a bit about each other.

I'm an HVAC technician living in Northwestern Washington State.

Father of two, Grandfather of two and I've been hanging around this forum since 1998.

And yeah, I have a bit of a Rose problem.

I love hearing all that others do. I am a 47 year old female and Mom to a 20 year old son at school in NC ( he's living my dream) and a 17 year old daughter ( junior in HS). Hubby of 26 years is a senior executive in Nuclear Power. We have lived overseas's 3 times (Belgium and England) and I developed my love for roses after our first stint in Belgium. I homeschooled my children for 5 years, after using my BA in BS to get a SRA in Real Estate Appraising. Now I wear many "hats" - ex. wife, Lacrosse Coordinator, Coordinate bible study group and Parent Board. My two dogs a mini poodle and a new Havanesse puppy are my winter therapy and my garden's - about 65 roses and one perenial garden are my sping, summer, fall therapy!. My hubby is wonderful in supporting my "addictions" and even helps me mulch. Loves to comment on how beautiful the garden's are, but does not share in my "therapy".

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences, bejay! It sounds like a great career. And, like my career of editor, which is the same thing my mother did, it sounds like the technology used day to day has changed greatly over the decade, but the base skills remain the same. As with anything, a lot seems to depend on hardworking, flexible and willing to learn. (When my mom began as an editor, there were not only no personal computers or word processing software, but no Post-Its or photocopies. In the space of my 17-year career, I've gone from doing all my work on paper to doing 98% of it on the computer, and moved from teaching my editing class in a classroom to teaching it online. But I would say more is the same about my day to day work than different! Dangling modifiers and insecure authors haven't changed a bit.) ANyway, I'm glad you spend your time gardening, canning, and sharing the stories with us. Hope you're feeling better! Z

"Yea, well this is exactly the sort of thing I'm talking about and aslo exactly the sort of stuff my DS would do as soon as I turned my back." I'm not talking about SD doing this when her mom turns her back, mom was participating in it. Okay, maybe I'm a little more than biased about that crap because SD gets hurt and BM calls CPS on US for not taking her to the doctor. I'll admit nobody's perfect, all parents make mistakes. Where I am coming from, if I let SD do some of the things her mom does, like riding a piece of cardboard tied to the back of her truck in the snow or riding an ATV or riding lawn mower with no helmet or safety gear, BM would throw a fit that I was putting her daughter in harms way, but it's okay if she does it. It's just ironic that she's a nursing student (and EMT certified) and her daughter gets hurt constantly doing stupid stuff at her moms, with mom playing right along. That's what BM considers fun. (and she doesn't work all day anywhere, let alone as an EMT or nurse, so she can't say she's under that stress) So, I'm sorry I'm a little biased there and I do know what you mean reacting with your mom hat on. I used to do the same thing when I had a hard case at work... go home and hug the kids with greater appreciation.

Pam -- Nahhh....... no flip flops. I usually just wear Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and deck shoes (with no socks) to the office. Today I actually didn't wear Hawaiian shirts since, well, it's time to do laundry. Oh, that and it's kind of cold outside! (Yes, I have to start wearing socks now because of the temperatures outside!) We're moving to a new building next week and, unfortunately, we'll be sharing office space with at least one older (and more traditional) lawyer. It'll be interesting to see how the cultures clash. I wonder how he'll respond to the Darth Vader mask and the rubber chicken in my office? Stories I can share? Well ....... there's the story of a start-up here in Ottawa that was in business for less than a year with about a hundred employees. They were bought out for an amount in the upper nine figures. And then there are the crackpots -- about 2 decades ago, one guy went to someone I know and said he had this device for, uh, dropping ordnance on a specific company here in Ottawa. And he started ranting and raving ....... the guy I know slowly eased him out, saying that he didn't do military based inventions. Then he called the cops. Patricia, I was also hoping that Rosebud would pop in!

I forgot to mention that I have just a "tad" over 200 roses...and a pot ghetto. Roses are therapy, perhaps a saving grace to help us deal with life's drama.
I was able to quit smoking when I started growing roses so my hubby gladly digs my holes and helps me pull weeds. I am forever grateful I stumbled into this wonderful forum 10 years ago and picked up a new habit!

I don't know how I did this but I forgot to mention my two other babies. Callie and Chloe, my three year old beagles. They are the funniest and sweetest family members I have. Its amazing how two sisters can be so different. But I have three sisters and we are all different as well. I too have well over 200 roses, thanks to most of you, but most are new from this year and last. Judy

I'm a guy, 32, living in Cincinnati with DW of 7 years, Michelle. We've got 3 fur children (miniature wirehaired dachshunds): Hannah, Gracie, and Maggie. We hope to be adding a "person" baby soon.

I'm Content Quality Analyst (editor) for a company that develops call center training, among other things. So when you talk to that customer service rep next time, they might be reading from a script that I edited (although, I don't care if I mess up here :)

I've always loved gardening, and this is my second year addicted to roses, particularly OGRs. They are the perfect fusion of plant and history for me. The garden is definitely a retreat from my fluorescent-lighted cube. Like Harry said "Gardening is squeezed into weekends as the primary source of stress relief (along with excessive drinking)." Amen brother.

I am female, 41 years old, and have a horse farm. Hubby is a family physician who practices in a non-profit rural clinic and still sees patients at home, in nursing homes, and in hospital, so he works long hours. We'll be married 20 years in August, and also have a Jack Russell who will 20 in August, if she lives that long. We also have 3 cats, who very much disprove that old adage about cats being dignified and aloof and all that. And more wildlife than you can shake a stick at!

It's very nice to meet everyone here. I'm a female and work as a business analyst for a large firm. I have three daughters 15, 12 and 6. A dog and 2 cats. My husband manages a wine shop. In addition to roses I grow vegatables (especially tomatoes).

Female, 40, married to Marc for six years, one furkid (Beagle-Lab mix who is driving me crazy right now barking at the squirrels).

I'm an editor in the features department of our local newspaper, working mostly with the food, music, theater and pop culture writers, and some lifestyle stories as well. Oddly enough, the home and garden section comes under someone else's supervision, but I'm always giving her story ideas after my latest (mis)adventures in the garden.

I am new to Roses and this forum. Very active forum, lots of info, wonderful people.
I am female. I've got a master's in engineering physics. Currently employed as a technical writer.
2 kids, 18 and 21 y.o.
We have a very special cat. We found him in the engine compartment of our car after the hurricane Isabel in 2003. He was 3 month old at that time.
Last year we bought our first single family home. In our townhome I had 80+ containers with plants and a tiny flower bed. Finally, I have a garden to experiment with.

What an interesting thread! There is not only a great variety of occupations, but hobbies (in addition to roses, of course) as well. It is especially heartening to read about members who have dealt with traumatic events such as serious illness or injury in such positive ways.

As for me, I am female, 62, and a retired elementary teacher. My husband of 40 years (also a teacher)and I did not raise children, but a few years ago adopted one of his former students. A few days ago we became grandparents!

We moved from Sacramento, CA, to high elevation South Lake Tahoe when we retired in 2001. Gardening of all sorts is very different here from California's Central Valley. Instead of "Oh, no, X won't grow here" I have discovered a whole new palate of plants.

I am an RN. I did two years of hard time in teaching hospitals before being paroled out to do home health. I've been happily driving around for five hours a day and seeing patients.I've been doing this for the last four years. Seriously, I have the best job in the world.

I see some patients, come home, have lunch, plant a few roses, pull some weeds, quick shower, go see some more patients...

I am a single mom, 35, and my daughter is now 8. I have over 200 roses, mostly teas, chinas and HT's and florabundas.

Gardening is definitely my therapy and keeps me sane in this crazy world.

I'm a financial services lawyer. My husband just quit his lawyer job and is now a full time playwright. We rescue pugs and they rescue us--unfortunately that means one of us has to stay employed to keep the kibble and the meds aflowing. I look forward to retiring some day and opening the shop I've always wanted to, of course with a pug companion next to me at the cash register (though this dream is so far away in the future I suspect cash will be a thing of the past). Hi everyone!

Female. A certain age that ends in 0. Retired last year from the same telecom co as Flo. Now working as a project manager for a management consulting firm. Trained software engineer, haven't written a lick of code since 1995, when I was promoted to manager. don't manage anyone now except myself (badly). No spouse, no kids (5-yo nephew), no pets. Hence the ability to indulge in the shoe obsession...

70+ roses. A few OGRs, but mostly HTs, minis/mini floras and shrube.

It is once again time for me to nominate Rosebud for President.
Last time I brought this up the new owners of the Forum emailed me and told me it was taboo.

Really enjoyed this thread and getting to know a little bit more about our forum friends.

One more phlebotomist amongst us, though retired now. Also retired B&B owner. I was still working at the lab and co-operating the B&B with my hubby who took an early retirement. Could hardly wait until I was sixty to be full time at the B&B, which just continued another two more years until my mum passed away leaving a small inheritance which allowed us to "almost reluctantly" drop the B&B, something we loved and enjoyed, but we honestly were doing it to subsidise our small pensions. We no longer had to do that. So are happily retired now and love our property which we built and landscaped from a forest floor that we cleared.

Missed this thread--been too busy arguing politics over on Hot Topics. But spring is here, 10 roses are waiting to be planted--time to get my priorities straightened out. Roses first!

I am a female professor of English (American Literature) who will be starting "phased retirement" at the end of this semester. (That means I will be working half time for the next four years--then full retirement.) That should leave me more time for my roses while still allowing me to indulge in my other passion: getting paid to talk about my favorite novels. Such a life! LOL

Female - living in Nashville, TN . Have always worked in the music business since college . First job was a DJ but moved on to work at a record label for many years (marketing, video, publicity, A&R (Artist & Repetoire ) and now finally am working for an entertainment artist management company. Love my job but the passion is roses! Also want to say a big thank you to all our forum friends who have such a great understanding of science. All the explanations on sprays, etc are wonderful for me as one who loved the liberal arts but broke out in hives over chemistry.

Forgot to mention my "side job". I am a Celebrant, a person who is certified to perform ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, retirements, baby naming, pet funerals, retirements, etc. I have learned so much from being a Celebrant, and it will be what I do when I retire (again) from my "real job".

I am a mom of 6, wife of 1. I have 2 boys in college, one a freshman in Illinois, the other in NC, (hopefully) going to Grad School after he graduates this spring. 4 girls at home. When my youngest (7) was in her last year of preschool I went back to school and am now an RN, working weekend nights ($$$ is great) and I have the priviledge of assisting babies into the world. I work as a labor and delivery RN at a teaching hospital so I know more than the Residents sometimes :) I have a yearning to move to the 'country' (wherever that is) and maybe someday will have the opportunity to do that so I have more room than I could ever use to fill with roses. I love reading the posts here even though I rarely write anything, I have learned more from you all here than any book! thanks!

I guess we are as diversified as our roses! So many interesting occupations among us. I'm a woman, 37 years young and married for almost 20 years to my best friend in the world. I consider my "job" one of the greatest blessings of my life. I have been able to stay at home with my children PLUS be their teacher. It has been a wonderful experience I would trade for NOTHING.... not even roses....LOL. My oldest daughter is 16 and will finish high school in a couple of months. My other daughter is 14 and is in 9th grade. My "other" job is being a pastor's wife which is very rewarding and also very demanding at times. I have always loved flowers but it's only been the last few years that I've had more time to devote to gardening. I always seem to have some "project" going and keep saying I can't wait for the day when it's all DONE and be able to sit back and just enjoy but then I find that it's the "doing" that is half the fun!

Many years ago my mother had a shop that sold quilts from Appalachia, stained glass from France, toys made by MIT scientists--in other words anything that caught her eye that was unique and homemade, so to speak. I'd like a store like that in the French Quarter to compete with the thousand stores that sell fake Mardi Gras masks and joke gifts about aging. being retail though I'd have to acknowledge it would be to keep me busy but not make any money. Thanks for asking. I would name it after whomever is the queen pug at the time :-)

Male, 28, policy advisor at the General Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture. I worked on phytosanitary regulation in my former job, also at the Department of Agriculture. In a relationship with my boyfriend for a bit more than 10 years now and we'll probably marry in the not too distant future, although he doesn't know it yet... :-)

Female with 63 years of experience here. Now working at my 2nd job. My first job was raising 5 kids, 2 homegrown, 3 adopted and some foster care. Two of the kids had rare congenital disabilies which I think they each get to count as 3 additional kids, LOL. All of them are raised up now, aged 39 to 25, And my nest is empty at least until my youngest comes home from college this summer. The kids are all great ...each doing their own thing and there are long awaited grandchildren entering the picture now!

Eight years ago we moved to a new house on acreage and I started a home grown organic flower business with my best friend. We love what we do and find it about pays for the cost of our plants we are addicted to!

Just cellebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Husband is a
Boeing Engineer and loves traveling around the world on business. Last fall I got to travel with him for the first time and can hardly wait to go again. Traveling is a conflict though with our other family members, our son's miniature beagle, the fastest fence "digger-under" in the west, a flat coat retreiver with aging joints who was supposed to be a field spaniel...sweet old guy! And a new Gordon Setter puppy on the way.

I have 4 acres, 2 of them in gardens, including a garden of English Roses which we cut and sell for those who like fragrance in their roses even if they don't last forever! Also about 100 other roses scattered around the gardens. I Am starting a bed of Freelander roses from Palatine to sell at our flower stands. I also love lilies and dahlias, but best of all I just love picking glorious armloads of flowers and then playing with them and making them into temporary art! During the summers I pretty much live outside among the lilies and roses and honeysuckle and jasmine fragrances.

This year I am slowed down a bit while replacing my knees so I can continue to do what I love! Had the left knee replaced FEb4, and am planning the right knee for May 19th , after getting the sunflowers, asters and zinnias in! I am totally pleased with one new knee and can not wait to have the other one done and recovered from! After DH retires in a couple of years I hope we can do more hiking in our beautiful northwest.

Female, college professor who retired after 34 years in higher education and never looked back. I loved teaching and I love retirement! I'm married to my hero and my best friend, who still works as a college Dean. ( Can we call that working?) We have four children and eight grandchildren who are our greatest joy. A 14 year old rescued puppy, who will always be our baby girl, and a rescued yellow tabby, who is a puppy in a cat suit, have us. We just built a new house and moved this year. Right now I am staring at an absolutely bare lot overwhelmed and frozen with indecision. So many roses, so little time left, so much space to fill. Where to begin?

Interesting how many people work in the health care field. I work in a hospital too, though not directly in patient care. I'm a biomed tech at a university hospital. We install and maintain medical equipment, ensuring that it's properly calibrated and safe for treating the people that need it.

I'm male, 45 yrs old. I run a DJ and Video company for private parties such as weddings, anniversaries in the Chicago area. Been married for 20 years with 2 teenagers and a dog.

This is a wonderful thread, and Florence (Zeffyrose) told me to have a look. I haven't been here in so long, but do remember you all from a few years ago.

I'm female, 65 years old, married 46 years to my wonderful husband, 5 children, 3 daughters, 2 sons...9 grandchildren, 5 girls, 4 boys, and 2 great grandchildren, 1 boy, 11 months, and 1 girl, 12 months. I'm trained in skincare, esthetics, have worked off and on when I could. Husband, retired Air Force, and then had a career as a Quality Control Specialist at a Nuclear plant. Retired from that 5 years ago.

I've always been a stay at home Mom, no matter where it was...as a military family, and traveling so often, the kids needed the stability of a Mom who was home.

We now have a sweet home in seaside New Hampshire with about 25 roses and perennials I adore. We also have an empty nest, which is good.:)

2 of our daughters are nurses, 1 daughter is loan officer in Anchorage, Alaska bank. Oldest son is a warehouse manager, and youngest is a maintanence worker at the Navy Yard.

Oh yes, we have 2 sweet tortoise shell kitties, Zoe and Sophie. They are rascally kitties, too.:)

Waiting for spring now...

I'm Diana and I'm usually over at the Cottage forum but do love this forum, too. You are all so friendly and helpful!

I consider myself retired even though I never retired officially from one occupation. I've worked in the grocery industry, have taught and have worked for a D.A. I went back to college in my forties and finished my degree. Received a B.A. in American Studies with honors. I think I liked school more than anything so I may start taking a few classes again, maybe in horticulture. I haven't ruled out working outside the home again and sometimes tease DH that I will get a job when he retires (in about 5 years).

But for now I stay home and grow roses, mostly floribundas and David Austins. Life's good, I'm content and my DH of 26 years is still in love with me despite my plant busting budget. : )

Don't know how I missed this thread.....Oh yeah, I was on spring break. I am a female school counselor, 56, who works in two elementary schools in Western Oregon. Most of you know me as I've been here forever! DH is a middle school teacher. Have 75 roses on 5 acres of heaven. Two grown daughters and a son about to leave for college (halleluja!!) Have a lab mix dog that keeps me walking and a kitty. I am soundperson for a rock band and play mandolin and do vocals with them. Gardening is my meditation.

Engineer - "demoted" to a program manager with the Guvment. Lost time for roses after that - although part was burn-out - but I'm gonna try again this year. If Color Magic is still standing after absolutely no watering during last year's drought, maybe the rest will come back strong, too. ;-)

Wow lotsa scientists here, myself included. I am earning my PhD in pharmacology, with an emphasis on tumor biology (gynecologic oncology, in particular) and animal modeling with targeted delivery. I also do part-time organ removal for the morgue.

Certified plant nut - orchids, roses, clematis, and epiphytic cacti are my favorites. I tried bonsai - but I don't have the space (yet). Dream is to be a toxicologist or a pharmocognosist....someone who takes plant material and extracts drugs from them. The truth is I would spend more time in the greenhouse than in the lab.

I am a domestic Goddess. the only thing I don't do is sewing and other textile work. But if it involves food and growing things (children include) I am there.

Female...I am a Realtor in the Dallas area. I am also just getting into fostering Cocker Spaniels. We have one of our own and we just love him to pieces. This is my second year with roses, but other than that, I'm not much of a gardener. I am busy with my real estate career which is leaving less and less time for my roses!

Hi, just joined the forum this month.
Female; retired after 24 years US Navy. 2nd career: IT (computer) Physical Security Specialist and happy that I can finally play in my garden with out having to worry what is going to die because I had to deploy for 6 months or more at a time. Married for 23 year, with one son, off to college in the fall, 1 Mini Daschund, and 2 Bengals cats.

I have my roses and garden and my husband has his muscle cars. Life is Good.

I'm female and a civil engineer. Love, LOVE my roses. Married, two little boys 2 and 4. Don't have much time for gardening b/c we choose to be with the children more now, but I manage to squeeze the rose time in one way or another.

I'm a female and currently working as a teacher's aide at a junior high school. I have moved around quite a bit with my husband for the past 33 years. I've been a nurse's aide in nursing homes and hospitals. I've been a dog groomer, library aide, waitress, vet tech, daycare worker...butcher/baker/candlestick maker!!! Every time we move, I find a job and plant a garden. We have lived outside of Kansas City since 2000. I have about 50 roses. I told DH we CAN'T move anymore...I can't leave my roses! I have 3 children; 2 grown girls and a 17 y/o at home. I also have a sassy chihuahua who loves fish and bone meal...yucky!
It says "Artemis" on my Greek birth certificate, but I'm known as Diane.

What diversity! >^..^50 yo female, married 27 years this August. 3 "kids"....
19 yo daughter (who works 1 1/2 jobs & is going back to college in fall & just got her own apt), 21 yo son in Guam (Navy) and 23 yo daughter married/living in Long Island-wants to go to flight school. 3 kitties. Love your pet pics!

I'm a fulltime 1:1 Teaching Assistant in our school district, working in a regular classroom with students who have special needs. In summer I work with OCM BOCES doing the same (summer school). My students keep me running (often literally!)

Gary (hubby) is so excited now that spring has FINALLY arrived, as he just tolerates his job, and detests winter...so he lives for the sounds of birds, and gardening and riding his motorcycle!

Oh, and we are involved in our church-ushering, working with kids programs, taking care of the rose/perennial garden we planted there 5 years ago, and also do motorcycle day trips with about 25 friends there.

I have enjoyed reading about all of you. I am Mom to 3 adult kids, young grandma to 3 little ones, and I work as an RN in maternity and NICU. Married for 35 years. I love doing photography, knitting and gardening. Nice to meet all of you!

Wow--what interesting reading. It's so nice to know more about all of you!

I'm 45, single, mom to two spoiled doggies, and have been seriously gardening for only three years, but have learned TONS from this forum and the great and friendly experts here.

I'm a legal assistant and have been in legal for about 17 years--took a break for three years to assist/support the senior pastors at my church, then had to come back to legal to rest up. ;) I work for wonderful attorneys (not necessarily an oxy moron) whom I really enjoy.

My garden and roses "saved" me during the difficult process of losing both of my sweet parents over the last two years. It's truly a wonderful therapy and if someone could bottle it, they would make a million. lol!
