Ideas for Low Maintenance Landscape Fruit/nut Trees?
Comments (10)You can top an American persimmon and keep the height in check. American persimmons are astringent so birds and other wildlife don't generally bother them until they ripen. This is not the case with some Oriental persimmons. I use American persimmons for deer specifically because they are native to my area and low maintenance. You can't do much maintenance on hundreds of trees scattered across a couple hundred acres. Astringency helps me because flying and climbing animals don't much bother the persimmons. The don't get fully ripe until the fall on the ground. At that point deer have an equal chance as other wildlife. Most critters in the woods eat persimmon when they are ripe. So if you are living with wildlife in the area, they will keep the persimmons cleaned up pretty well from the ground. There are also some oriental persimmons as well as crosses between American and Oriental that are astringent. For a situation like yours, they may be a fit. If you use Lotus rootstock instead of Virginia they tend to be smaller trees. Many of the Oriental persimmons ripen on the tree and do not fall. If you use an astringent variety, they will be largely protected from animal use until they ripen. At that point you will need to compete with climbing animals. In a landscape setting you would not have the fruit on the ground issues if you don't have wildlife around to clean them up. My personal experience is with American persimmons for wildlife. I just throw Oriental out as an option for you. Others can help with specific varieties. I don't know if they are as maintenance free as American. Comments (12)Bboy, that was funny. LOL! I had no idea that you could make syrup from hickory nuts. It would have to be some super-tasty syrup for me to make that effort. Seriously, Lucky, I checked out some pics on the web and you're correct, it's a Mockernut, Carya tomentosa. Also, I must applaude you for finding a most creative use for hickory nuts. I grew up with pecan trees and they're my favorites...hickories are new to me. At this point, I think that we'll just try to save the tree and leave the nuts for the squirrels. After I shared your comments with the boss, he offered to put on his snake boots and clear a path for me so that I could try to save this tree. There's a nice Prunus serotina, Black Cherry just down from this one that is also covered with ivy. Thanks to GW, I just found a name for those trees in our area a month or so ago. I'd sure hate to lose that one. I guess the boss had better get out his machete knife again. (LOL) The big one up the street is already getting little cherries on it. Lucky, you know, I just may collect some of those hickory nuts when they start falling this year and give them a taste test. It will be a first for me. Thanks again to all! Comments (7)We just did ours in Sherwin Williams Sea Salt (BM does a sea salt too...just to confuse us...so not that one). I got it as a test for my kitchen a couple years ago...very wrong in the kitchen but I knew it would be smashing in the bathroom and I was right. I love it. I think shelves or a shelf above the loo...perhaps with some natural accents. I have a jar of sea glass in my bathroom that my kids have collected over the years...maybe some pale greeny-blue jars for cotton puffs etc.?? I also love the biggest, fluffiest white towels I can find....See MoreI moved into a condo that is painted totally one color. ISO trim idea
Comments (6)Mary if you paint the trim in an accent color you'll have to use in throughout the house though you might find that too confining. You can't change it from room to room and not expect it to look like a circus. You can still have lots of color in your house with white walls. Don't paint yourself into a box....See Morekyponder
