Out of curiosity, what is it like????

Jeri, the information that I found on the helpmefind website is pretty minimal on this rose. The cuttings I received were part of an exchange and the only thing that I knew of the rose when I struck the cutting last October is the name....San Felipe Noisette. I seem to vaguely remember during the debate regarding the "Flores Street house eater" that this rose was named as possibly being the rose in question, but I think that post is no longer available.

Learn something new everyday. :) I had always been told that the Flores Street house eater was Mermaid. I had never seen the 'house eater' in person, so I didn't question that bit of folklore. Because of your post Molly, I googled it and saw pictures of the blooms. Obviously not Mermaid. According to one site they thought it was San Felipe aka Brightside Cream. I guess I need to make a field trip to SA. LoL

Sorry I don't know anything (yet) about San Felipe Noisette, but I can supply a link about 'Flores St. House Eater'.

I say "yet" because a rooted cutting of the 'house eater' was given to me last fall and I'm looking forward to possibly having blooms this year. Maybe we can compare notes later. At one time it was suggested that it might be Lamarque.

Unfortunationly Peaceful Habitations Rose Gardens is no longer in business, nor is it open to the public. It was a wonderful garden which I was privileged to visit many times. In fact most if not all of the photos shown on "Tour of the Gardens" were ones that I took. I'm glad the site was left up as it has some excellent references.

I found a photo of San Felipe on HMF, and I thought it looked a bit like something between Lamarque and "Pilarcitos." Which interested me, because I really like "Pilarcitos," and ours died. (Too much heat bouncing off the big retaining wall.)

At one point I had both and alas the ex got rid of them.From my remembering (that is not what it used to be)The house eater was more like La marque and yet not quite right. I really need a start of both again to compare. Of course we may really never know what with "bird dropped seedlings" and sports. Right now I have a seedling coming up under several of my roses and although they have not bloomed yet I am willing to bet that they will be very similar to the "mother" plant nearest them. I have always considered the thought that the House Eater and San Felipe might be a seedling.

Here is what the owner of Humminbird Hill in Taylor, Texas has to say about San Felipe Noisette:

"San Felipe Noisette, found rose in San Antonio, to 15 feet in Texas. Very double, creamy-white, prolific small flowers that repeat in flushes. Very disease resistant. Fragrance? Zone 6b-9b. "

Jeri, do you think that when Roselee's cutting of the Flores Street houseater starts to bloom a positive ID on the rose can be done?

Molly, I've asked Barbra (Honey Bunny on the Texas Forum) to let me know when her plant blooms and I'll take pictures. She grew it from cuttings she took from the Flores St. rose and passed along a rooted cutting from her plant to me. I want to see how big her plant is now also. She has it growing along a chain link fence.

Lewane, from your other post I see that you are Rozanne, the Rozanne who posted the only picture of San Felipe on HMF. Again, welcome back to the world of roses. If there are any rose cuttings you'd like to get you going again email me from my page.

I think, barring DNA tests, the most effective thing is to grow side-by-side, roses that are suspected as being the same.

It may not provide proof-positive of a match, but it certainly can eliminate some candidates.

We now have:

Brightside Cream, from Bermuda

Flores Street House Eater, from San Antonio?

San Filipe Noisette, also from San Antonio, which might or might not be the same rose as Brightside Cream. If those two, from San Antonio and Bermuda are shown to be the same rose, they must at one time have been in commerce.

Then, there are two roses being sold as 'Lamarque'. VG offers a Thomasville Lamarque, which is possibly the Lamarque grown throughout the South, and a California Lamarque, which is said to be a bigger bush with bigger flowers.

VG also sells Brightside Cream. If it were the same rose as either Lamarque, someone in CA would most likely have noticed already.

Is there any possiblilty that the Flores Street House Eater and the CA Lamarque might be the same rose?

H. B. Ellwanger complained, back in 1882, about "too much alike roses". Among Noisettes which he thought were too much alike, he listed Lamarque and Jeanne d'Arc. That would not be the Noisette bush we now grow under that name.

Is it possible that one of the foundlings which look like Lamarque but are not exactly Lamarque might be the original tea-Noisette Jeanne d'Arc?

Anything's POSSBLE, but until you grow some of those plants up together (or someone else does) we won't know.

The rose in commerce as Jeanne d'Arc is no way a match for ANY Lamarque. But that doesn't mean a lot . . .

(BTW -- I do LOVE Ellwanger!)

Would anyone who might be expert on growth of roses care to guess the age of the Flores Street rose?

I have a lot of fun with Ellwanger, also with Jack Harkness.
