Ginkgo Biloba

Hi. I am completely new to the gardening world (gardenweb and gardening in general). My first real project is ginkgo biloba. I started first with ginkgo biloba seeds in vermiculite. My success rate wasn't great but I figured the strong survived. I have two that germinated much much later. My prize is a seedling and its roots are now popping out of the makeshift plastic box I got and drilled holes into at the bottom. Does anyone know how to transplant these little things and in what kind of soil? Do I have to be real careful of it - as in does its roots damage badly? I have a yellow thumb (cross between green and black) and would need very specific instructions. Thanks so much!!

Hello juilyfun,

The soil best for gingko biloba is acidic soil with proper drainage and right amount of sunlight and you can transplant it in a garden soil during spring time.

Thanks gardenlover. This does help. Do you know how careful I must be in transplanting the little thing? Or what best to use? I am using vermiculite right now and its looks like a bunch of wood chips. Do you think that I have to transplant it with the vermiculite? Thanks again.

Coniferjoy Ginkgo biloba (Spring Grove # 86) was first found by Randy Dykstra and later regestered as Ginkgo biloba 'Jehoshaphat' by Richard Larson from Dawes Arboretum in Ohio. I don't know where the # 86 came from. I will ask some time. Randy also found Picea orientalis (Spring Grove # 47), Pinus koraiensis 'Spring Grove', Abies cilicica 'Spring Grove'. Picea orientalis (Spring Grove # 47) is now known as Picea orientalis 'Spring Grove Gem'. Randy selected # 47 from a batch of broom seedlings grown from the original broom.

You could keep it in the same container if you lifted it and added more potting mix. All plants growing in a soilless peat, coir, or bark based medium will require fertilization at some point. You may want to consider deciding what kind of medium to grow your bonsai in so that you can switch it over soon. Two of my favorite specimens were ginkgo grafts....very enjoyable and rewarding to work with.

where are you.. z5 is about half the US.. and wildly variable ... in my MI .... Gs are very slow.. and i am thinking because of the rather short active growing season ... it is a tree .. as such.. there is no ultimate size ... as it will keep growing forever ... until you or it dies ... ergo ... if you could find an annual growth rate ... you could estimate its size in a given time period ... e.g. if it grows a foot a year ... in tens years it should be around 10 feet.. in 20.. 20.. etc ... B&B is in the PNW ... with its extremely long growing season .. so i would tamp down any growth rate they might have ... and presume.. it would grow less in my z5 .. where the growing season might be 3 or 4 months shorter ... i have the common variegata .. id say.. in 10 years ... its barely 8 feet tall ... all that said.. its a really cool plant.. and if you have the budget.. and the space.. i would suggest you need to have it ... to make your toes tingle ... ken

I used to work at a nursery that grew Ginkgo, but only from cuttings. You can only be sure of the trees sex by starting them vegetatively. Transplanting them did not require anything special. Al

Thanks for the help! I've transplanted them already. My biggest seedling, I've had to clip the root at the bottom as it was growing out of a small hole in my makeshift box. I couldn't just slide it up. I hope that this doesn't kill it! I'm crossing my fingers now.
