The blooms of Perle d'Or have proved to be a lot more durable in hot weather than those of my Arethusia, which were thoroughly cooked by noon before the plant was moved to Louis XIV's sun-protected neighborhood. Good thing the two roses look good together. Both apricots are healthy and floriferous, with pleasing growth habits. I'd probably have a hard time choosing between them in a milder summer climate. I like Gruss an Aachen, but if space limitations forced me to make a choice, I'd hold out for Pink GaA (AKA Irene Watts). The color is better, IMHO. Marie d'Orleans is a good, generous rose, and quite the little attention grabber. It's the only rose in my collection that my non-gardening dh can identify by name. After 3 years of hearing him laughingly refer to it "that sea urchin rose" or "the bed head rose," it was vaguely unsettling to hear him call it "Marie d'Orleans" last year.

With 35 reports thus far, here are the results. I did not ask about some suggested key identifiers, which are shown in bold. If you can confirm their existence on your Duchesse de Brabant, it would be interesting. I don't yet have a confirmed petal shape. If anyone has any leftover petals, flatten a typical petal under a book and describe the shape. I suspect that these are typically cuneate (wedge-shaped). Leaves open wrinkled and then smooth as they mature. Leaf margins are slightly wavy. Leaf texture is thin. Powdery mildew in coastal and central valley of California and in damp spring. Prickles beneath on petiole (mid-rib of leaf). Prickles on canes are scattered. Bloom form is globular (fewer petals) to cupped (more petals). Stamen: filaments are white to cream, anthers dark amber when fresh. Petal color is medium pink with cream to white centers, probably cuneate (wedge-shaped). Petals count: median 54 total, with range from 86-21. For those with a hand lens, the sepal margins are glandular ciliate. More than half report strong/fruity Tea fragrance. Some cannot detect Tea or did not report. Plants often grow to 8 ft. x 8 ft. Feel free to confirm this description or distinguish your plants if you haven't already described each of these characteristics. Roses that didn’t make it here at the old place (that I can remember off the top of my head): Dames de Chenonceau; Versigny; Francois Blaise (sp?); Condesa de Sastago; Lady Emma Hamilton; and a couple others that I’d need to see the list to name. They have transplanted 100+ of our old collection to the new place already. It’s going to be a much smaller garden, because of water concerns. I was amazed at how some of the bigger teas (really huge plants) survived essentially being “bare rooted“ and just started shooting out growth from thick, old wood the second they were in the ground at the new place: Niles Cochet; Mons. Tillier; Mme. Antoine Mari; Old Town Novato; Clementina Carbonieri; Rosette Delizy and many others I can’t recall. Now, if we can only keep the deer pressure off of them. We have been spraying deer repellent regularly, and it remains to be seen if that’ll help

Hi Hidden, Welcome! I am in zone 6 in south central PA. Here Mary Roses seem very resistant as far as the pinks go. Beverly is too but her form is more traditional. Heritage is very David Austin in form and has a lovely scent. Here is something to consider though. I have planted the same roses in two locations on the property. One rose will get get black spot and one will not. Rather than blame it on the rose, I imagine it has to do with growing conditions like sun and airflow or the weather in general. Since BS and Powdery Mildew are the 2 banes of my roses I thought I would share this. I just re-watched Gardeners World season 2016 episode 22. Monty Don, my guru for organic gardening, mentioned that Powdery Mildew was caused by the plant being too dry. I had never considered that. So this year at the first sign of PM on my roses or clematis or honeysuckle, etc I am upping my watering frequency.
