does anyone grow watermelons or any other melons?
Comments (6)melons (all kinds) need warm long season. If the season is short and cold fruits may not get big and ripen. The starter said that he did not get any melons. One reply was "did they ever flower?". Good question. If they don't flower there would be zero chane but if they did, there could be some chance butnot automatic. Melons family plants has two different flowers, male and female. The female has to get male's pollin in order to grow fruit. The insects, mostly bees do the job of polinating. There are other flying and non-flying insects which also become a pollinators. The chaces are you might not get any of those. In such cases you will not get any fruit, UNLESS YOU DO IT YOURSELF. Ther are other reasons fo melons not to fruit: (1) too much nitrogen, (2) Too much shade not enough sun. You can do a few things to improve the chances: Feed them fertilizers rich in phosphorus, poor in nitrogen, after they begin growing vine. Pinch the main, when it is about 4 ft long, to encourage latteral vines growth. Most female flower will appear on the latteral branches. Also, plant them in a location that they will get a minimum of 5 hours direct sun....See MoreAnyone growing tea (Camellia sinensis )?
Comments (15)The enzymes in the tea leaves promote oxidation of the leaves after they are picked from the tea plant. Just as dying tree leaves turn from green to gold, red and brown in the Fall, so wilting tea leaves start to go brown and black under warm humid conditions. This is a form of natural oxidative decay, a bit like apple flesh turning brown after it is cut. Therefore the enzymes have to be knocked out by steam in order to stop this "fermentation" and retain the green color of the leaves as they are dried. This is also done to things like green beans by blanching before freezing...otherwise the enzymes can cause the beans to turn black and leathery. This fermentation is allowed to occur naturally when black tea is made, because the leaves are not steamed and the enzymes are intact. The fermentation process increases the body, astringency and complexity of the flavor but also removes some of the anti-oxidant components of the tea....See MoreSavannah Kordes hybrid tea anyone growing?
Comments (28)I have only been a serious “rosarian” for three years but it has quickly tuned into an obsession! I only purchase Kordes roses because of their fragrance and beauty_ also pre- Covid 19, Lowe’s sold them . Unfortunately, 4 of my Summer Romance contracted RRD and had to be destroyed 😔. I bought these from Lowe’s, but my neighbor’s Knock Out roses had RRD and I suspect the wind transferred the mite to my roses. As to the Kordes Savannah, I purchased three Kordes rose bushes at Lowe’s, and although they were ticketed as Plum Perfect, the roses on the bushes were pink. I finally decided that they were mis- labeled. I’m not sure how I arrived at the conclusion that they were Kordes Savannah, probably from comparison of pictures on line. My Savannah’s have been constant and prolific bloomers for the last two years and their fragrance is divine. They are definitely pink and I see no apricot tones on mine. I have attached two photos. If these aren’t Savannah, I would appreciate a heads up. Also attached a photo of a Summer Romance bush in full bloom....See MoreDoes anyone grow Hawaiian Sunset hybrid tea?
Comments (6)Yeah, I recently had to replace mine. I originally got it from Vintage Gardens many yrs ago. It was very slow growing. But I find that I don't plant bands in the ground right away any more. They seem to take forever to grow. It took like 4-5yrs to get a decent size, and just as it was beginning to get some good blooms, it up and died on me. I also lost another rose next to it a yr or so later, and I think it was the fact that I wasn't keeping track of my sprinklers. I think they just got dried out in that particular area due to the water spray missing them. Anyway, once it got going, it was quite lovely. It peaked out about 3ft. Didn't have much disease as I recall. The color range is pretty amazing, going from apricot to peach to pink and orange, and all sorts of blends in between. I just got my replacement last summer from RVR, but it hasn't bloomed yet. Here's pics of the old plant's blooms over a few yrs:...See Moreberndoodle
