Well, it finally happened.....

I dont know how many of you read about Frodo the Bullfrog eating my baby painted turtle? I was going to get rid of him..but he doesnt seem to be bothering any fish, the vote was 3 against 2 for him staying, so i say OK we'll let him stay..I'm such a sucker. I know, I know..its only a matter of time right? Well...

This morning about 5:30 I go outside to take some flower pix. I hear a ruckus like you wouldnt believe at the pond. I look, but its too dark to really see anything.

I go back a little while later to find this....

I think...he ate...a bird. Poor lil innocent thing was prob just sticking his head down to drink..little did he know, there was a predator lurking right beneath him..under the rock ledge..the water is low cuz I have to do a lil repair today..There was a chunk of feathers..a few free floaters..but obviously he either ate the bird, or there is half naked bird trying to fly around the neighborhood, lol.

He was smirking at me, I'm sure...with his belly looking awfully fat..just as it did after the turtle went missing.

Fine with me, as long as its not one of my fish! He can eat anything he wants BUT my fish!

Such is life...as I just was explaining to my daughter last night..while discussing a cicada killer that was flying around us, she loves cicadas and wanted to kill the cicada killer..lesson of the night; things need to eat! ya think the cows like that we eat them? but dang arent those cheeseburgers & steaks GOOD! lol

GEEZ! How big IS Frodo??

I have a bullfrog where just her body is the size of my closed fist. Add head and feet and she is rather large but surely not big enough to eat a bird. Even a small one (I think).

Well, I think Bullfrogs are bullies. I guess I'd rather see a bunch of smaller, varied things around my pond and not worry about Frodo eating them all.
My vote would have been with yours!

Evergreen magnolias are also a thought - 'Brackens Brown Beauty' flowers about now, as does 'Little Gem', which is smaller - it also grows slowly. Their drawback would be the thick fleshy roots - they are close to the surface and resent disturbance, plus any shade will be HEAVY, so planting under them is not an option. Their large leaves would fit into the "tropical" look. A Parrotia persica might be good - to 30', great fall color, scaling bark with maturity. It's deciduous, and flowers early, before the leaves. Later flowering possibilities - all deciduous - include chitalpa (pink or white flowers, spring to fall), sourwood (white, fragrant flowers, summer, good fall color) and yellow wood (white, spring to summer, good fall color). Finding them might be a problem, but not insumountable, esp. as the last 2 are natives. Franklinia, while deciduous as well, does flower later (July to Sept.), and has good fall foliage. Chionanthus (fringe tree) will have just finished flowering now, white, scented on the Chinese, less so on the native blooms, has yellow fall foliage. They are both findable, as I have a Franklinia and saw several of the fringe trees in Asheville Farmers Market a few weeks ago. Paper bark maple, as well as a couple of other maples (Amur, trident, 'Bloodgood' [red leaved, tall Japanes maple]), will stay small. They won't have the late flowers, and they are deciduous, but will have good fall foliage, and winter bark interest. A gold leaved, taller JM, say 'Aureum' (?), might be good too.

Justin~ I have actually just been using the Sears detergent w/ Oxy Clean, also doing a prewash on the heavy duty cycle (longest setting), so far it's been working great! There are sometimes when his white t-shirts still have a few spots on them, but you have to expect that when dealing w/ a construction workers clothes! We are very happy to finally be moved! We were living in a small town & now we're way out in the country... Very quiet & peaceful! I also like our new house MUCH better than the old one... Seems like we (& our stuff) just fit better here. :)

I want to preface what I am about to say with that it is coming from a place of heartfelt concern. I know sometimes messages can read rudely so know that that is not my intent. I feel like if as a child someone made negative remarks about your appearance in any capacity and you are still carrying that, you should consider getting counseling. It would allow you to release that and move on. I was in counseling at age 19 (not for remarks about my appearance) and it was a major turning point in my life. I would highly recommend it. I got jokes about being short my whole life and it hasn't affected me in any capacity. It is what it is. I'm short, so what? It doesn't change my life, I am responsible for how I feel not anyone else. Life has serious moments, but life as a whole isn't serious. Love, laugh and realize that nobody is perfect, everyone has something. I have an unsymmetrical nose, it's far from perfect, but I'm not self conscious about it. I wouldn't dare "fix" it. While you all are entitled to an opinion on how people raise their children, just know that so am I. I don't believe we should shield our children in bubbles. If my son had real anxiety about his height that's one thing, but he doesn't. He's annoyed because he's the oldest and he's a very driven kid. He doesn't think he's going to stay 5'6" forever. He also knows that his paternal grandfather grew 12" just a few years before adulthood. He's the oldest, he just want to feel like the oldest. Perhaps it's that we aren't people who get hurt by little things. We've had big issues to deal with in our family. My children aren't shielded from those big issues, like having an uncle who has schizophrenia and is un-medicated. They get to actually learn about the illness and develop empathy for people who are in the same position as their uncle. Learning to have a sense of humor about things we can not change is a huge positive life skill. If you dwell on the negative you're only harming yourself. Editing to add that I'd like to make it clear that we don't go out of our way to say comments to him and all we've said is when he comments on his brother's height is about the protein. I've never said anything in a disparaging way to my children and want to make that clear.

The Friends of Vintage Roses has some of the catalogs. They took possession of them and, I believe, the website as well as the physical roses. They had them for sale at the Celebration of Roses and our Sacramento Open Garden. Before that, Gregg very kindly gave a few of them for sale by the Historic Rose Garden. I still have a small stack of those treasures! So if any of you are desperate for the hard copy of the catalog, there is hope. Recently their website hasn't had all of the content about the roses so I had been referring to it less and less often, and using the book more and more. What a wonderful thing it is.

We try to relocate any bullfrogs we see at our pond.
We wait until dark and shine a flashlight in the frog's eyes.
We then are able to net it and relocate it to a pond about 5 miles away.

yeah, I knew all about them before I brought this guy home..so I knew what I was in for. I was outvoted..I'm a sucker..As long as he doesnt eat my fish.I dont care what everyone else around here says, he eats a fish, he's gone! It is my pond after all, lol. I have a bunch of little fish, I dont know what kind, maybe about an inch to an inch and a half long, that my daughter netted in the lake we got Frodo from, and we put them in there, and some kinda baby fish that appeared out of nowhere. He can eat them, I dont care, thats why I agreed to put them in the pond. Of course I treated them first. He can eat all the birds, mice, moles, tiny fish, little critters he wants..but if any of my goldies go missing..The Koi is def way too big for him, lol..thank god.

I have to admit..I do like hearing him making noise at night. And its fun to watch him eat bugs out of the air.

Mondotomhead, he isn't ginormous, but he is good sized. He keeps eating like he does and he will be ginormous, lol.

Daniellalell, I know what you mean. I have one medium sized bullfrog (came on his own) and as long as he doesn't eat my goldfish he can stay. I do worry about the birds, especially the fledglings, but I don't think he's quite big enough to get them. Last summer I had three bullfrogs - small, medium and super-sized! No problems, even from the largest one and they all happily over-wintered in the pond.

I enjoy listening to them but I *do* miss the leopard frogs. The first year I had the pond we had 25 leopard frogs! This year and last year, only a few and they don't stay long. I hope they leave on their own but I'm not entirely sure!

Ummm... by the way... how old are your goldies? Little fish don't just "appear out of no where". When a Daddy fish loves a Mommy fish very, very much... [queue the dramatic music and cut away to the waterfall]... 'nuf said?
