Heptacodium bark pulling all the way off

I know heptacodiums have exfoliating bark, but this is ridiculous. This tree/shrub was planted in 2007; this has never happened before. I caged it and all the trees, shrubs and a few perennials that are beloved by rabbits (I didn't know whether rabbits have developed a taste for heptacodiums, but I didn't chance it). I don't have a deer problem. I'm showing a closeup of the bark issue and a full-size image so you can see the tree looks healthy otherwise (that white round lump in the top right is my dog's rear end.) Anyone have any idea why this is happening and whether it's all right? It sort of looks like the kind of rabbit damage that leaves a tree looking all right till about late June, when it up and dies.
