Some seedling avocado trees may never bear fruit, because of imperfections in the blossoms or whatever. Those that eventually do produce a crop may take many years to start bearing. And my understanding is that the probability of a seedling avocado bearing good fruit is quite small. (In other words, they are comparable to apples rather than peaches.) So even those who live in areas where avocados can be grown outdoors would be much better off using such seedlings as rootstocks and grafting them, rather than letting them grow out. Avocado expert Julie Frink makes the same point concerning avocado pot-culture that Jellyman does: the plants generally aren't well-suited to containerized existence, and she does not recommend trying to grow them even in larger containers like half-barrels. However, I've heard of people keeping them as house-plants for years, so I guess that can work out in some cases.

Blooms? Heck my Avocado tree is barely hanging on! No blooms at all. I have quite a few Citrus that have not bloomed, including Pummelos, Tangerines and Meyer Lemons. I have 50 Citrus, and most look horrible since they drop leaves/fold leaves when water stressed. I can only drag a 350' hose to them once a week if that. I'm praying for rain! First the stress of the freeze nearly ruined everything, now the drought is killing the survivors... And to think we used to get flooded every year! Lisa

MMMMMMM! Avocado. And a cool looking tree. And shade, too. I think some of us would like to come meditate. Hosenemesis - I just did a trade and someone sent me some ribbon grass that I think is going to look like that when it recovers. It started sprouting new leaves the day after I potted it! Apparently ribbon grass is a nasty invasive in some areas. Between that and the super fast recovery time from shipping, I'm hoping it will be hard to kill -- even in the hot weather I've been having lately. Apparently, it likes water and bogs, and since it won't get much of that here, I expect I'll be able to control it. I have a small clump now, but from what I've read I'll have a good size clump by spring. ; )
