OMG!!! I Cannot Believe This!!!! Grrrrrr!!

I have worked so hard on my first pond, despite hubby's thinking with the economy it's a waste of money, therefore, I've cut corners as much as possible! The pond itself is our old mesh satellite dish that we layed in the hole he dug for me and then covered it with an ordinary tarp! I learned after 2 pumps/filters to get a "good" one, so I did splurge somewhat on that and got a Pond Master! I've been buying water plants as you know by all the questions I ask about planting them! lol I've put 3 fish in there....nothing expensive....a Black Moor, Calico Shubukin (sp?) and another Calico that is a Fantail Shubukin!

Everything has been going great until the other night one of my nephews obviously knocked one of the bigger rocks around the edge into the water! They didn't mention what they had done, so I didn't even notice until the next day because it was dark by the time they left the night before! I thought I'd be smart and try to get the rock out myself, which was a HUGE mistake! Because the pond is the satellite dish, the deepest part is in the middle, and that's where everything goes, including my one foot/leg that I had in the water! I slipped and did the splits like I probably haven't done since grade school! LOL I'm 42 years old, on the overweight side and have 2 steel rods in my back from a car accident years ago that broke my spine, and I had NO business even attempting that on my own! I didn't get hurt, but thank goodness my son happened to come around the corner when he did because he had to help me out! And, of course, I got a lecture from him about waiting on him to do it, blah, blah, blah! He's 17, and I'm 42...aren't I the one that's supposed to be doing the lecturing???

Okay, sorry to go astray, but either the rock that fell in, myself falling in or both has punctured the tarp in some way because my water level seems to be going down! Can you believe that??? I WANT TO JUST CRY!!!! My question is what does everyone else use and/or recommend using for a liner? And, if a regular pond liner is the best way to go, where's the cheapest place to buy one? They are quite pricey!

I'm so sorry this is long, but I knew this place would be the only place I'd receive any sympathy! Everyone here at home thinks I'm just nuts! lol

I got mine from ebay. if you watch them for a while they begin to go down in price. If you are in a real crunch you could use black plastic from lowes, get the thickist you can find. maybe look for a used pool liner.

Oh geez karla..........I'm so sorry!! I'm just glad you're okay. Doing the splits after age 20 is dangerous! I'm afraid I would have broke in half! They probably would have had to call the fire department to get me up and out! haha
Could the rock have punctured the satellite dish? If not, where's the water going? Is it going underneath the tarp?
I personally would try to buy a good liner, since you don't want to have to do this again any time soon, but someone in another thread said they used their shower curtain. I suppose anything that can hold water will work, but you want it to last.
Some nurseries have little pond sections, but not many.
I've seen liners at big box stores, but they might be made of PVC stuff, rather than the EDPM stuff.
Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in here. I just have stocktanks, and don't have to deal with liners.
I'm sorry your family is being hard on you. You AREN'T nuts. You're doing something that gives you (and hopefully others) alot of pleasure for just a little money. I think its a wonderful thing!

You all are the best! I appreciate your thoughts and good wishes, and concerns for my undies...lol. Got a copy of police report today and there were no charges filed. The truck driver's statement and the other lone witness statement are both crap, holes that even I can poke through...on drugs...lol. I am trying to find video of the intersection and have found some (google earth) which show my intersection with a green left turn light while a yellow light was still on for the oncoming traffic lane which hit me. I think I'll set this one out and let the attorneys fight it out. But, if anyone knows of any good websites that show traffic and the process of lights changing, I would greatly appreciate it..... lol. Brenda

Hi firsthouse, once more, your kitchen, well your whole house actually, is a stunner so thank you for sharing it w/ us. I have a question for you. Since you have the 3" edge on your countertops, did they have to build your cabinets up under the marble so it didn't hang in front of the doors? What did your counter height from the floor turn out being? I'm doing full overlay doors & am considering a mitered edge a little thicker than my slab, so am wondering if they'll have to build up under the marble, which will raise the counter height higher than 36", which should be fine. I'm just wondering if that's normal & want to be prepared when they come to measure. Thank you!

Probably more humid than you might realize next to the window. The plant doesn't look like a begonia because the leaves don't look 'lop sided' (a/k/a asymmetric) as all begonias do. It looks nice and healthy, you must have good luck with plants.What is the plant with the white flowers?

Wow he is growing up so fast! He looks like a delightful little boy. And the “gadget wall” is brilliant! Did you make that? I’ve never seen anything like that but it looks like a wonderful thing for for littles ones. They can practice all of their motor skills and have fun doing it!

I wouldn't have attempted retrieving that rock with a 10 foot pole. lol I am so afraid if I fall in my pond I won't be able to get out. I even had thoughts to get one of those fire escape ladders to put by the pond in the event I do. I ain't even going there as far as the splits are concerned.

I notice you are in zone 5. When I ordered my liner I ordered it from BestNest. I put on link here for you. It was pricey, but when it comes to my pond I spare no expense. I don't drink or smoke, so I indulge in my pond and garden for r&r. You may pay more for the shipping now with the price of diesel fuel being what it is.

Oh, my, so sorry. I would still be in the pond today if I tried going into mine. LOL
Have you ever thought about going to a building supply store, Menards, Home Depot, ets. and get some heavy roofing. If you know a buiulding contractor he may even have a piece left over from a job. I can't remember the thickness, 45 mil comes to mine but someone else will maybe help you with that. I don't believe there's an ounce of difference between that and the actual pond liners and soooo much cheaper. If you are trying to keep down the expenses I would go that route. I know there are some who disagree with this but others have used the roofing and didn't seem to have any complaints. If I ever have to replace mine that's the way I'm going. Good luck. As for the liner best nest who on selected items pays the freight or e-bay. Be sure to buy EPDM with the underlayment combo that way you will not have the rocks puncturing the liner again. Or use old carpet which even gives it better protection in MO. Most carpet stores throw away more than you could ever use, just ask them. One of my ponds is lined with new carpet scraps.

I'm sorry this happened but the tarp was bound to get damaged sooner or later.
Yes, the EDPM pond liner would be best for you to use. If you want to save some money check with local roofing companies to see if they have it. Its used as a roofing membrane too.
Many ponders have bought roofing membrane for much less than paying ponding price for the EDPM. Sometimes the roofing companies have scrap pieces that they can't use and will even give it away.
To save yourself future headaches, I really would go with a real liner of some type as tarps, plastic, etc are just going to eventually put you right back in the same place again.

I was just checking this site out for ideas for my pond. I built my pond on the cheap also because I try to recycle everything. I used our old swimming pool liner. My kids wanted to go to the public pool with their friends so here I was with a soft side pool just laying around.
Here's what it looks like. This is the third year and have had no problem at all. Fish do great. We've had at least one batch of baby goldfish(30-40) and apparently frogs and toads are quite happy since we've had hundreds of babies the last two years.
