Shrub ID please - early spring red berries

Can anyone ID this shrub? ID books and internet have been searched to no avail. I have a new piece of land that I will be building on soon, and the shruby undergrowth is almost entirely this shrub, growing under mixed hardwoods with a high percentage of red buckeye, mountainside at 800' in northern Alabama. I did not see it flowering (assuming it did), and these are new berries. They were not there over the winter. Between last weekend and this weekend, the berries seem to have multiplied, but I saw no flowers last weekend. The shrub is mostly 3-4' tall, although I saw some as high as 5'.

The berries are soft with a non-slip rubbery hand and seem to be filled with a jelly-like fluid. They come off the bush easily, and any that have split open, ants are collecting the insides. No leaf fragrance that I noted; I did not squish any of the berries to check for seeds since I didn't have gloves nor water handy if the juice proved to be caustic.
