Which Clethra cultivar?

Does anyone have any positive experience with one of these Clethra cultivars? I'm looking for one that may have a more dense rounded habit.

I'd suggest Sixteen Candles. Supposed to stay more compact.

My Hummingbird suckers a LOT; I would steer clear of it.

This is my first post on this forum. You mentioned this southern magnolia has a fairly erect growth habit. It may be 'Kay Parris', a cultivar that is apparently a cross of Little Gem and Brackens Brown Beauty; said to offer an even increased blooming trait. The leaves are fairly orangish-brown on the underside with nicely rippled edges (seems to be a distinctive feature) that add a nice foliage texture. This cultivar is a fast grower, upright and well branched. Expect it to reach 20 feet tall and 10 feet wide at maturity, which may be within a decade. Zones 6-9 adaptability. I have a young one one in eastern North Carolina at about 9 feet height and only 3-4 feet wide that is going to be a very nice tree, although not yet a profuse bloomer. Hope this helps. I am a great fan of Southern Magnolia. I have 5 different upright cultivars in my yard: Little Gem, Hasse, Alta, & Teddy Bear, in addition to the Kay Parris. I would be interested in hearing from forum participants of more experiences with Southern Magnolia. Thank you.

Hello Hans-Werner, Donna and Fred, Thank you all for your reply. Several years ago, I gave her the name 'Silhouette', but I don't know why ;) ... I think she had more pronounced stripes when she was young (or growing under more direct light?). I'm very much happy with Mrs. Garfield, I hope she'll bloom regularly now ... I had only hoped for a slightly brighter pink, these blooms do tend more towards red, but I don't want to complain! The plant stays at the big North-north-west facing window, there is no direct light whatsoever reaching them. But most of my plants thrive there, there's still enough diffuse light. 'Mrs Garfield' had much darker leafs when she received some evening sun in summer. I will post more pictures the coming days when all blooms are open. Thanks again! -the Klotz, Carl

Which cultivar of Picea orientalis is this?

I can’t get a better picture at the moment, the nursery is not very close to me. The nursery staff said it is from before their time and they are unsure, but one thought it could possibly be nigra compacta. In agreement with stuart’s comment above. Thanks for your thoughts.

GG48, several of my type 3s are just starting blooming now, and since Rick is in my part of the country but a bit farther south his are likely blooming as well as some of the type 2s. We had a fairly early start to spring this year and it seems to have pushed some Of the clematis a bit earlier than typical here.

Is the suckering forming dense tickets or is it random shoots?

In our area plants that tend to sucker just don't as much until many years down the road.

I saw a few very attractive clethra downtown, they were about 5' tall and had no suckering.

I have the species Clethra alnifolia and it hasn't suckered at all. To be fair, I have the 'Hummingbird' in a wetter location, which is bound to encourage suckering. But it is just a handful! I keep trimming off sections of the suckers and potting them up for plant sales that I donate to. Sometimes I just rip it out and discard it. Other than that, it's a nice, lower growing plant.

That makes sense then...most sources say that 'Hummingbird' is more apt to form colonies vs. the other cultivars.

Sounds like 'Sixteen Candles' is superior to all the compact forms?

Ruby Spice and September Beauty may be too large.

I have Ruby Spice, it's very pretty. September Beauty is supposedly more compact.

I thought I was buying another Ruby Spice, and I got a white flowered form (mislabeled). It could be Vanilla Spice? It had a lot of flowers, bushier than RS, and is one year less in the ground, and as tall, as RS. Very upright, rounded growth habit. I love the winter form and the dried seed capsules. Clethra are one of my favorite shrubs.

Or could it be September Beauty? Does that have one a white flower?
