Need help in selecting flowering shrubs

Hello :

We live in the suburb of Buffalo, NY and have a fence running from north to south. Our neighbor had tall spruce trees on his side of the fence. Unfortunately, due to an ice-storm almost all of his trees (50 feet + tall) fell down. Thus, it is bare in the back and we can even see passing cars. Now that the trees are gone, it is partly shaded although some places have full sun. We need to cover about 40 feet. We would like to get some flowering shrubs put there It will be nice if they grow-up (at maturity) to 8 to 10 feet. We would like colors. We have 1 wygelia shrub at south end while we have two forsythia bushes in the middle. We can even take these out.

I would greatly appreciate recommendations from you. Will we need to do some soil analysis? We are frequently visited by deer. Thus, we want something they will not destroy.
