I have two own-root, one from The Uncommon Rose and one from Chamblees. Both were planted in 2007. My gardens are no-spray. My RdV are not shooting out long canes, but many thin pliable canes, the longest of which is maybe only 5 or 6 feet. Karima, is yours a grafted rose? If so that may explain the huge growth spurt in one season. It really doesn't explain the stout canes though, that doesn't seem to be a characteristic of this rose but I've never seen a grafted version. I have trained some of the longer canes along a 4 foot high fence and temporarily tied the shorter ones to a pyramid that I move around the garden as needed. The young canes are so lax that they'd be in the mud if I let them be and I want to see those beautiful blooms.

I think the single, most beautiful display I've ever seen on any rose may have been years ago, on a 'Reine des Violettes" that we pegged, nearly flat to the ground, with just enough arch to prevent the canes' snapping. It was astonishing when it flowered. Hundreds of closely-packed flowers. On the other hand, we've never done it again, because after that flower flush, the structure of the plant was a mess, and we pruned at it for a long time to make it "normal" again. And it was a lot of work to peg it in the first place. Nowadays, we grow it as an untrained, unsupported bush, which easily reaches 6-7' tall by nearly as wide in a season. We do prune it fairly hard, especially for height, in the spring. We get a major bloom flush in the spring, then a few flowers here and there all summer, then another heftier flush in the fall. It then continues with a few flowers through the winter, until we prune, usually late February or early March. (this is in Lakeland Florida) Malcolm

rust is a nightmare here with this rose - as soon as we get a little autumn rain (and we usually get plenty). Overall, rust is not usually much of an issue for me - I have only ever had one rose which was susceptible (although I have not got experience with hundreds of them like some of you) and, as it was a beloved Madame Gregoire Staechelin, I was prepared to pick and burn every leaf with a trace of rust but I definately could not manage to do it for more than one rose plant. It looks grim in a couple of the college gardens so I would give it a pass.

I agree with Folly that, if your conditions are alkaline, Reine des Violettes is not for you. WONDERFUL rose -- but not for those of us with alkaline conditions. The rose I like a LOT better than RdV, in that same color range, is the Found rose, "Forest Ranch Pom-Pom," or "Forest Ranch Purple Pom-Pom." It's not in commerce, but it is in the Sacramento City Cemetery, and I am hopeful they will be propagating it for sale this April. In heat (just like RdV) it can be pink, but in my cool climate, it is almost always poiple. AND it is never bothered by my alkaline conditions. Clean foliage, too! When ours finishes its first spring flush for 2013, I'll remind DH to propagate it. Jeri

I, too, intend to have a no spray garden (will accept some blackspot, but hopefully not too much).

After considering the purple rose matter (among others) on this site & elsewhere, the purple roses I will be planting in the Spring are:

Captain John Ingram
Belle de Crecy
The Bishop
Violet Hood
Reine des Violettes (by the way, Vintage has its parent,
Pius IX; I am somewhat curious what
that rose would be like)

Purple pavement (not sure how purple it would be; it seems
a lot of purple roses do best where it is
cold-Ebb Tide, for example) may be one you would like to consider, as rugosas (depending on the area) would be more resistant.

I have Snow pavement (white with lavender tinge), which appears to be doing quite well, although the rugosa I have that seems to be doing the best is Dart's Dash.

In my opinion, most 'Purples' turn out to be that funky reddish purple. I want a blue purple but I still love them all.

I'm expecting both purples I have to blackspot, but I can live with that in a once bloomer.

I grew Midnight Blue for a couple of years. Here it was pretty healthy (different climate) and the purple tends more toward the blue than is generally true of so-called purple roses. However, do be warned that the roses last only a few hours, a day at best.

Having blackspot on Veilchenblau was rare for me but so was bloom on Belle de Crecy.

It was my Veil's first year. Plus the spot he's in doesn't get AM sun. Still the R d'O right next to him was clean all year. Go figure.
