In Search Of: An English-like White (peggyoregon)?

I'm really wanting a white rose with an English like bloom but know that Austin doesn't have a good white (non-spray) which would fair well in our climate (rainy Oregon.) Ideally, it would be 3 to 4 ft., fragrant, disease and rain resistant and better rebloom than the Austin's generally do. The blooms of Out of Yesteryear are my ideal but alas, it has no fragrance. There is always something. Mary Webb was very white when I saw her last year at Rogue Valley Roses even though HMF's photos are more of a light yellow. I appreciate your input, as always. I have two Austin "Winchester Cathedral" roses that have done very well (coastal British Columbia).

My rose garden has 50+ varieties and sadly I think I've lost a few from the harsh winter we're just emerging from. Time will tell and my fingers are crossed! Brad Jalbert (available and entirely approachable and helpful through his website and via email) at Select Roses in Langley B.C. has been the best help in planning my garden, and Winchester Cathedral is one of the Austins he suggested where I wanted a white 'filler'.

I'm new here and have just (I hope) posted a link to help. If it doesn't work I'm sure a general google search will! Good luck!

Welcome to the Rose Forum, Westcoastgardener, and thank you for the input on Winchester Cathedral. I've considered it but Austins tend to not rebloom as well as some other roses for me anyway and I've heard that Austin whites have issues with disease resistancy. My mother in law has Glamis Castle and it never has any leaves. I have already done extensive research and have looked on numerous websites. However, I value the opinions of rose gardenwebbers more than what is advertised by the online rose nurseries and even the info on HMF. Am considering Out of the Night but there isn't much information on it. It is the sport of Out of Yesteryear which I have seen and do like. However, the latter has no fragrance and I would prefer some. Am hoping that someone out there has grown Out of the Night and can tell me about performance. Other than that, I may just order me a WC. Judtih, hope you'll let us know how these do for you. I don't grow DA's here, too fussy, but am veryveryvery interested in how Baby Alberic does for you. Andrea, if I were to try a white DA I think it'd be Fair Bianca if I could figure out where to get a healthy one. CJ--don't know how she is in your climate but Madame Plantier is a white rose any breeder would be proud to claim. This oldie but goodie is as gorgeous as Mme. Hardy to my eyes, and will succeed in milder climates. You might like Lamarque, the climbing noisette, too. And to round out worthy whites that aren't DA's but are great garden performers, Faith Whittelesey. Tooo big? well Ducher then. Stop me now!

I got my Hopi from www.springhillnursery.com w/ a sale they had during late April. Its doing great but not sure if it will flower this year as it's little but has grown some. Its a medium pink flower according to the Clemson extension website. I found my Dynamite at a local nursery that I planted last fall; it's just now starting to flower and it's awesome looking. A deep red. Not sure if you have a Kroger in your area but mine just put out Centennial Spirit, Tuscarora and a non-named purple crape probably a Muskogee for $6.99 each.

Since it's been all about "Something's Gotta Give" I thought that Nancy Meyers' follow up movie "The Holiday" needed a closer look. Just as the star of Something's Gotta Give was the Hamptons house itself, the star of the "The Holiday" wasn't really Cameron Diaz or Kate Winslet, but their two homes, one in Los Angeles and one in the English Countryside, respectively. And in another connection between the two movies, the production team was led Jon Hutman - but Beth Rubino, so wonderful on the set of SGG, was absent for The Holiday. And just as with Something's Gotta Give, Nancy Meyers' personal interior designer has photos of "The Holiday" houses on his web site, but he is not mentioned in the film credits. The Holiday, coming so soon after Something's Gotta Give received a lot of prepublicity hype concerning its premise: two women swap houses for the Christmas vacation and both find love. Speaking as one who lives surrounded by English ivy - it is a major invasive problem in the PNW - if you severed the ivy on the house from its roots, it is dead........it just hasn't dried out yet. That takes time, usually several months with summer weather; longer if cooler and damp. But it won't make any difference if it is still green and somewhat succulent or fully dry and brown. Pulling it off the house will remove paint - ivy actually glues itself to the surface it attaches to and that remains firmly in place even when the plant is dead and the vines dry and brown. If it's still offered Fragrant Wave did well for me here.
I gave it away when I moved and haven't thought of replacing it in the new place.
It was always clean and bloomed like crazy in big sprays.

There is a floribunda called "Fabulous!" that might do for you as far as size, color, rebloom and form. It has a fragrance that I find pleasing, though not super-strong.

Blackspot can affect it, but that should not be much of a problem in your area. I'll put a link below to photos you can click on for a larger version:

Have you looked at Pure Perfume? I don't personally have one yet but am working to change that fact. I saw it at the Del Mar rose show a few years back and it looks like an english rose and smells incredible. I believe it might be a Jackson & Perkins rose. I don't know about its disease resistance.

Pure Perfume would be a good choice. I have had it for 3 years and love it. It has old fashioned blooms and smells like grapefruit. I spray but have noticed that it is one of my cleaner roses for BS. Another great white that I got last year from Chamblee's is Kronprincesson Viktoria. This rose has more of the quartered bloom form you may be looking for, it did not get any blackspot but developed what looks like some rust issues this winter. Good luck on your search!

Dallasguy, do you have problems with Viktoria balling. She is the white sport of SDLM, correct? I love SDLM, but it hates rain here.

Rose Marie is a white sport of the English Rose Heritage, which can be grown non-spray if you tolerate a little BS. It gets 5'-6' tall though which is a little bigger than you desire. Little Marie Pavie would be ideal if you like her semi-double blooms.
