Name That Plant!

Shrub I.D.? with expelnation

I moved in with some friends, who have a few very over grown gardens. I know a few of the plants, but the big stuff is where I am clueless. Thank you so much if you can help me out. Also? I was wondering what could I spruce up this part with when I am done? We all enjoy perrineals. Just, we need no Daylilies. We have way too many! :)

Also? I have never seen a catipilar like this. Would anyone be familar with them? They are all over the place here!

Not sure on the plants, but the caterpillar looks like it may be the hickory tussock moth caterpillar (Lophocampa caryae).

Compare your shrub to Glossy Buckthorn, Frangula alnus.

floraluk- 'Flowers may have a scent or not. Leaves may have a scent or not. Flowers and leaves on the same plant do not necessarily smell alike.' So, I guess I can conclude it is not the Cherry Laurel because the leaves should have a scent regardless of whether it flowers?

Mindy, it's very interesting that someone has incorporated this into a garden. In my experience, it's more of an annoying weed, usually along the edge of the woods, that hides and grabs you when you least expect, lol. It either hides in the spring, lowdown and inconspicuously, and tears at your ankles and calves as you walk, or worse, hides amongst the weeds and bites your hands when you pull a bunch of said weeds. Or, it grows to monstrous proportions and reaches out to snag your hair as you walk by, entangling you in it's vicious grip. Okay, I'm exaggerating - a touch! - but you get the idea. So I find it quite interesting to see it as part of a garden. Just goes to show I need to think outside the box more (to use an expression I don't care for much, but which really says it all!) :) Dee

It has two different types of leaves, one type alternating ,elongated and serrated at the edges and the other type appearIng in pairs as bracts just below each alternating leaf or by themselves along the stem. It did not flower after I moved in. It was fully and densely leafed out. It has proven itself to be a fast and vigous grower. The stems are spineless and smooth. It appears that the entire shrub was cut back to the ground sometime last season, along with the lilacs, roses, hybiscus, and wisteria. Here is a closer Look at the leaves.

Thanx a ton! Would Glossy Buckthorn be a friend or foe?
The kids here are going to enjoy knowing about hickory tussock moth caterpillar! :)

A FOE! Common and glossy buckthorn are invading North American woods and landscapes, and destroying existing systems. Cut it as soon as you can. Google "invasive plants" and you'll find buckthorn on most state and provincial lists.

Fruit looks sessile to me. Consider Ilex verticellata before chopping it down.

Sorry, I got excited at the possibility that it's buckthorn. Agree with lycopus, be sure it is before cutting it down! I can't tell for sure.
