Ashdown Moving Day update

Hey y'all!

It is now February so it is time to bring you guys up to date with what's going on at Ashdown. I'm not sure if you've heard or not but Paul has decided on another site to relocate the nursery. The way he's described it it sounds like a perfect spot. That's the good news. There is a bit of a downside......the new property is not quite ready for planting. Paul and friends are now doing some serious clearing of brush and stuff and it won't be ready for the projected moving day of the 14th.

What Paul would like to do is change the actual moving day to a time in a month or so in order to make sure the new land is ready. For those of you interested and for those who have taken time off or made plans to travel around the 14th Paul has said that there is plenty to do at the old nursery. Here are his words:

We need help cutting back, tagging, hand lifting and potting smaller plants etc, etc. Then rose moving day itself will be moved to a date to be determined probably towards the end of March.

I will be at the nursery on the 14th to help out and meet any of y'all that decide to come. I'm thinking it will be a day much like the Dirt Days they have out at Vintage. Please let me know if you think you might be there.

What I would like now is suggestions on how we handle lunch that day. Working people need food. Should we bring something? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If I may jump in.

We need LOTS of help that day. There is much to be done getting the roses ready. For lunch I'll suggest Potluck. We have space and can handle that just fine.

I would second the idea of packing a little in advance and, if possible, take the packed items back with you in your car trunk so Friday won't be a flurry of moving type activity. Pack at least 7 changes of clothing at first; that will initially give your Mother enough leeway until her laundry facility routine is worked out. Will she be doing her own laundry, or does staff do that for the residents on a schedule? In some facilities, each resident is assigned a certain time slot. Just for your own benefit, it would be good for you to know about the laundry, what time meals are served, what time of the day there are group or planned activities, religious services, hair salon appointments... the daily facility routine. I've found that really helps with picking times to visit, etc. since I want my Mother to interact and socialize with the residents and don't want my visiting to take away from that but be an addition to it. As for stuff besides clothing and personal care items - some family photos, clock radio if she enjoys music, small TV unless they have giant screen TV's in the common rooms. A favorite knick-knack or two. A few different sized plates, cups, glasses and silverware for the kitchenette. Really, at first I wouldn't bring a lot; in a short while you'll know what she needs, would like to have around her or how to decorate to cheer up the space. Depending on how much space there is, might not be room for much more than a comfortable chair, bookcase and perhaps a small table. I wish you well with this venture and let us know how it goes. It's not easy, but just remember that your Mother will be in a much safer environment and you won't have to worry about her day to day welfare.

awm : thank you for the sweet and supportive wishes. I sure hope your ride goes well. Two of the folks I am with have done that ride and loved it. We are indeed fortunate in the support we get from our families. tina thank you too. I will keep up the updates as it helps to clarify things in my head too :). I am glad you are enjoying it. golddust. we had flashing lights but it was just a miserable set of circumstances....hopefully not to be repeated. Glad you like my TALL tales. Sue yes it never has stormed today but we have had a fine time. We walked several miles to go to a Dollar Store and to stretch our legs. Time for a nap I think. Your trip sounds wonderful. I bet you will always cherish that time as will I this trip. Most likely won't do another as I don't want to leave DH this long again but this one time it is good. More later. c

Move -in update ! A whirlwind 6 weeks.

You are all so kind. A couple of answers... 2 days to pack, actually we had 2 50 foot storage truck containers on our property for the last 3 years. Thats where most of our stuff had been. (They are the units that were broken into by one of the subs guys and my heirloom silver was all stolen. Amazingly, I got everything back. Long story.) No case against anyone. Times are hard for builders & most of them have no money or resources. We did file a complaint against our builder, but we are one of many in line. His license is suspended as of right now. My husband & I had to decide that we would move in without bitterness about what had been our life for the last 3 years. We have paid a great deal for this home to be right & in all truthfulness it should have been handed to us complete & finished. But it isn't, so what are we going to do about it? Well, for us the bottom line...,we have a life to live, children to raise, and a marriage to sustain. None of these things will be served well if we hold on to anger & resentment. We lost a ton of money, we had great stress, we had huge amounts of worry. However today we sit, walk, live, rejoice, fellowship in a home I dare say is stunning. Who am I to complain about anything? I have so much that I am thankful for every minute of my life that there is no room for anything else. My arms are full, my heart is at peace. We have nothing we want to battle for. Thanks Paul!

I was thinking of making a big pot of Chili and bringing it in a crock pot to heat it up.

Speaking of weather, I know it has been miserable lately down here but from what I hear this weekend is supposed to be gorgeous....sunny & in the 60's. Hopefully it will carry into next weekend. Spring is supposed to start trying to arrive around here in Feb.

I'm glad to hear that you'll still need a bunch of help next weekend, Paul, 'cause that's the only time I have available to come down.

What should those of us who are coming a LONG way bring with us? It's not like I could just run home real quick to get something if we need it, so what do you suggest? Pruners and gloves and Wellies are a must, of course. What else?

Make sure you bring warm clothes just in case. I only live about 5 minutes from the nursery so if anything is forgotten I am sure I can help- If you have a watch cap bring it. We get windy on the top of this little hill and ears get mighty cold!

I guess I need to dig out my ear muffs.
Sunni and I will be there for the weekend so we are helping on Sunday as well. We live to far away for a quick up and back and we both have Monday off. So that weekend works great for us.

Carole, chili sound great, let us know what we should bring food/drink wise for lunch.

Bring clippers, loppers - pruning stuff. I've rented a large gas powered hedge trimmer for the initial cut back but it would be great to clean dead wood etc.

If you have a spare shovel bring that too. We'll be hand digging the smaller plants.
