SOOO not organic, however, glyphosate will do the trick. That's the active ingredient in Round-Up. The problem with Round-Up isn't what you might think. The problem is that it has a detergent in it, designed to make it "thinner", (less surface tension, a surfactant), and the detergent is poisonous to plants and animals. The glyphosate just stops the photosynthesis cycle- which your fish and turtles are not reliant on. Look up something called Fusillade II (fluazifop-P-butyl), Eraser-AQ (glyphosate), and then a non-detergent type of surfactant like Dyne-Amic.

Hi Me, I'd say you've definitely gotten rid of the junipers---and it sounds like you almost got rid of yourself too! I do everything the easy way, so I agree with Bob, I'd just dig between whatever may be left of the roots and plant the hollyhocks right there. I recommend improving the soil the same way you would when planting any other plant---keep a bucket of moist Canadian peat or a GOOD quality compost with you, and mix about a third peat or compost into the hole and the soil you'll be backfilling with when you plant each plant. Water them in well, and they should be fine. By next year when they're getting to be full size, you may need to put in a 5 or 6' stake by each one to help them a little bit---especially if you get a lot of wind. (Where are you located?) And it's a good idea to mulch around the bottom of each one---or over the entire area---with one of the wood mulches---like the bagged bark mulch which comes in small, medium, and large at any of the box stores. Hollyhocks are also VERY easy to collect seed from if you want to--and you'll also find LOTS of seedlings coming up around them next spring if they bloom this year. The weed-killers that are not general all purpose (like Round-up) usually separate broadleafs from grasses or grasses from broadleafs. There are none that I know of that separate certain broadleafs from other broadleafs (what you have here.) When they are as mixed as your picture shows, usually, I would dig the whole bed, including all root pieces, separate out the bad plant and replant the good ... basically, starting over. But it's effective and usually the good plant recovers rapidly. Sometimes, it's impossible to remove all the bad weed root pieces and then the whole bed must be killed and started over. There are some plants that Round-up (or Weed-B-Gone) doesn't kill and once in a while, it happens to be the plant you are trying to keep. If that's the case, it might be able to work to separate out the undesirable plant. However, this is totally up to experimentation and there is no list of plants that it doesn't kill, so it's a method of last resort when you're prepared to kill everything and start over. Pulling weekly as Babs suggests is labor intensive but offers promise.
