Morus alba

I don't know, that doesn't look right for mulberry. The leaves are too regular, and not quite the right shape. In fact, it doesn't really look woody to me at all, but I can't put my finger on what it might be. Looks kind of like a Eupatorium, but they have opposite leaves and this doesn't.

I'm not much help, am I?

After you've seen 10,000 or so all over the world it gets easier. :-)

Haven't seen photos listed here but in my area leaves of white mulberry are often not lobed.

Thanks for the input. I do have a mulberry across the street. Every year the birds go crazy and eat the fruit and the droppings go everywhere. I guess some seeds from the droppings sprouted.

Gotta go with saltcedar and bboy on this one. White mulberry is a PITA. I just cut the seedlings off, dap the stub with straight glyphosate, and let 'em go! LOL!. They show up in my yard all the time.

OK, OK, OK, I give in. I'm gonna go out this weekend and find some mulberry seedlings. There are trees right across the street from me and I swear there are no plants over there that look like either one of those pictures...

Could also be the native Red mulberry (Morus rubra) They ususally have few to no lobes, the white mulberry has lots of lobes.

The upper surface of the Red mulberry leaves are noticeably rough, similar in texture to fine sandpaper, unlike the lusterous shiny upper surface of the white mulberry leaves. If it's White mulberry get rid of it, they cross with Red mulberry and White mulberry is a problem invasive species in the U.S.

There may be other ecological impacts, but one problem stated above is that white mulberry hybridizes with red mulberry. In some areas people are finding that almost all seedlings are hybrids, and this threatens the long-term survival of red mulberry.

This is from the site of a native plant nursery, and I like how simply it explains the problem of invasive plants:

"Invasive plants reproduce rapidly crowding out native species, damaging natural areas, and altering ecosystems. Many were brought into the U.S. as landscaping plants and have escaped cultivation. Most produce large numbers of seeds that are dispersed over large areas by the wind or birds and other wildlife making them difficult to control."

The first time I'd seen a list of plants like the one the site includes, I was unhappy to see how many of my prized plants were on the list. Now at least I have more information and I try to add native plants to my garden to help native wildlife and avoid invasive plants.

Thanks for the info. Some kind of Mulberry tree. I guess I'm going to keep it since its growing so beautifully. Maybe plant it in the ground next year.
