Why won't aucubas bloom?

We moved a couple of years ago into a home with a very well-established garden. We inherited a couple of large, standard aucuba plants. They're variegated, along the lines of the "gold dust" variety or so, although I don't know the exact precise type. They're in the shade, right next to each other, and we live in Sunset zone 5. They seem perfectly healthy, growing new leaves, etc. But, the aucubas don't ever bloom, and, of course, no berries, which is what I miss most. I'm not pruning them, so I can't imagine I'm shearing the blooms off. I know that aucuba blooms can be easily overlooked because they're fairly low-key, but I'm examining the bushes very carefully and really see no sign of blooms. Are there types of aucubas that will never bloom? Or, are my bushes missing some kind of key nutrient they need to bloom? Any help would be so much appreciated. Thank you!
