Has anyone grown Mexican Sunflower from seed?
Comments (8)It is my second year growing them. They seem to be more difficult to start than other seeds. I had poor survival rates with them, but the ones that grew were impressive plants. I start in jiffy pellets and/or seed starting mix in solo cups. Not much difference in germination rates for me. Also, some type of disease got some of them. Turned brown and died once about three feet tall. I like them and have about three out in the garden right now. Last years grew very green and bushy with intense orange/red flowers. Good luck. Comments (4)Attempts to pollinate night star have not had much success. Two scapes produced 8 flowers. The flowers treated with pollen from Jewel, double record, Lima, a dark red hybrid and a Lima x night star hybrid have all shrivelled up. Two remain alive - pollinated by different night star x giraffe individuals, but they donâÂÂt look very vigorous and are threatening to give up the ghost too....See MoreHas anyone grown successfully pepper mint from the seeds?
Comments (23)Mint? Go to the grocery store, buy a bunch of mint for a dollar or two. (Make sure it looks alive! Not wilted but vigorous.) take a 4" deep tray, fill with moist playsand (DO NOT MAKE MUD!...roots need oxygen). Pop pencil holes in the sand, drop in diagonally cut stems and cover with a humidity dome or a sealed clear plastic bag. Use sunlight or daylight artificials. No rooting hormone required. In 2-3 weeks you'll have more mint to transplant than you'll ever need. If you want the roots to get big...leave plants in the sand, remove dome and water with with a super diluted nutrient supplement like Masterblend or MiracleGro This technique will work with almost all fresh cut (perennia) herbs....See MoreHas anyone grown Sweet Autumn clematis from seed or cuttings?
Comments (2)Hey Deb I grew sweet autumn clematis from seeds and planted 3 or 4 plants next to the fence when we first moved here. I was so excited to have them finally since I'd always loved the look of the masses of frothy white flowers draping over a fence. Only it never did get the way I imagined. The flowers were few and far between and they were not really white. The foliage covered the fence and the trees and the cable guy's van parked on the other side. And then the foliage stuck to the white vinyl fence when winter came and you could see this huge tangle of bare vines with the dead, grey leaves plastered on the fence. Took a lot of work to get rid of it all. Then I read a warning that sweet autumn clematis is invasive but I can't remember what part of Florida that applies to. It might be OK up where you are. And it might perform better where you are. It would be nice to see you have success with this plant! Susie...See Moreundercover_owl
