What do you think about plain ol' triple- 8 for knockouts?

I defied the Law of the South by digging up all the azaleas in my front beds and replacing them with double knockouts. Yes, Southern Sisters and Brethren, I have rebelled. And I hope no one has my address. For those of you not from the South, digging up azaleas is a crime not to be taken lightly. But I digress.

This daring act took place two years ago, and though I have other knockouts here and there on my property that are doing well, these get tall and spindly, probably the result of a voodoo curse from the Azalea Society, but I admit that the soil and light aren't the best. I pruned them waaaay back and now I want to give them a snack in the hopes of making them bushier and more lush.

However, there are 25 of them so I'm looking for a cheap way out for a rose that isn't usually all that picky. Triple 8? Coffee grounds and alfalfa pellets didn't seem to do it for them. Any other ideas?

8-8-8 is fine, 2 oz. per sq. yard, may be repeated in 6 weeks.

If they are spindly, they may not be getting enough sun.

Hehe, couldn't resist. :D

For those of you not from the South, "bless your heart" has many meanings and not all of them pleasant.

I agree with chi83, you're going to love the Vitamix. It has completely changed the way my family approaches eating fruits and vegetables. For example, when I make ice cream now I always add a few servings of spinach, yellow squash, zucchini, carrots and red or green cabbage. I learned that those particular vegetables can be added to any fruit preparation without any noticeable difference in taste. I have also started using parts of fruits I never tried before. Adding whole strawberries, hull and leaves included, adds chlorophyll to our diet with no noticeable flavor difference. Cantaloupe and watermelon seeds are liquidized in the machine and you would not believe how much nutrition they offer. You can add the pineapple core to your smoothies and benefit from the bromelain. Instead of buying grape seed extract just buy whole grapes and process with the stem and seeds. Keep the pith on oranges and lemons when you blend and you will load up on flavonoids and phytochemicals. I love to be able to get nutrition from food instead of buying a bunch of supplements. My reply seems to have disappeared into the ether. I like the Emtek best. It looks designed and has elegance. It differs from a plain wire pull like a designer knit top differs from a Hanes T-shirt. It's all in the shaping. You can use a smaller pull, functionally, on the 36" drawers, but I agree that the 10" ones might look better. There are a number of different ways to pick the right size. The surest is to get a sample of each and try them out. Next is to mock them up with cardboard, wire or tape and try them out. Or you could use math. Do the same ratio (or as close as can be done) for all. Or make up rules, like all top drawers centered vertically, all other drawers 3.5" from top. All pulls one third the size of the drawer minus 3", and a knob on all drawers that are too small for that. Or Drawers under 22" get a 5" pull and drawers over 22" get a 10" pull. If you make a consistent rule the eye will pick it up and it'll look normal.

OJ, I'm sorry for the loss of your cousin. I hope you were able to meet up with the others from that area while you were there, as you'd hoped. I'm not following what you mean in your last post ("How can we let this (cold) story do the same??"). Do you mean how can we let this story die? If so, I guess I think it should ... the "15 minutes of fame" has about run out. I don't think they should get the publicity that they're seeking, because it's not the miracle that they, and some of the media, are claiming. It's a woman having a baby (ok, that in itself is a miracle of nature, but you know what I mean :-) I know a transgendered person. Was male, became female. And to me she is a she and there's no question about it. She went all the way, had the surgeries, is a woman. I applaud her for the courage it took to do so. Can you imagine the social prejudices she had to endure throughout the course of the change, and even still? She must have been very, very sure of what she wanted if she went through all that. And now she's happy. How wonderful! But in this case, Thomas didn't do that. Physically he's still a woman doing what most women do - having a baby. (OJ, regarding your PS, I don't know if you're joking or if it's a real question, but "letter carrier" is the accepted term whether male or female).

tv shows that weren't full of violence and sex. having a paper boy/girl deliver your newspaper. Now you are lucky if the adult driving the mini van can throw your paper even close to your driveway. Joann...I am in TOTAL agreement. I HATE not being able to speak to a live person when calling a company. Even worse then the "Press 1 for English" is the system that is voice activated. You tell them what you want and you hear "I'm sorry I did not understand you"....Isn't that why I pressed English in the first place!!!! Nessie..you are so right! Now days it seems everything is bad for. Carbs, calories, MSG, sodium, etc....no one even gave them a second thought.

Michaelg, how much to dig in around each rose? Teeandcee, I I laughed out loud. I'd invite you over for some sweet tea but you might be a member of the Azalea Society.

Fertilizer can't fully compensate for roses that are not getting enough sunlight. Roses in too much shade will be spindly and have less foliage. Can you thin out or trim some trees?

Well Hoovb, I know about that sunlight thing, but they are where they are. Can't thin the trees that interfere with the light they get, as they reside on my next-door neighbor's property. And he's my DENTIST! Who, after all, could impose more pain than the Azaela society than a dentist? I won't be asking him to thin his trees. They aren't in full sun all day, but not in shade either. Somebody tell me how to feed these things bush by bush. I'm going with the crappy soil theory.

I gave dosage instructions in my first post.

Don't dig fertilizer in. Put it under the mulch and water well.
