First time posting...Summerwine Ninebark

Hello,

I have been reading the 'web' on and off for a few years and really enjoy it! My question is about the new summerwine ninebark shrub. I planted 3 in the fall--they were about 2-3 feet tall...leggy, really with about 4 or 5 shoots coming up My question is, I know the best time to prune these sort of shrubs are after flowering, but is it 'OK' to prune down (a bit...say, take 12-18 inches off)the few tall shoots at this time of year, in hopes that it may jump start its branching out this growing season? Thanks in advance for any advice!
