Any sites for rare/endangered etc. seeds? Veggies, flowers.....??

Does anyone know of a site where or a site that can guide me to people who sell seeds that are "endangered" or risk becoming extinct? Any type of seed would do...... natives...... flowers...... etc. ..... vegetables would be fine too...... like heirloom etc. or wild vegetable varieties....... I'd just like to grow a few..... Thanks. :)

J.L. Hudson, Seedsman has some unusual seeds. Browse the online catalog. You might want to request a printed copy. It has some interesting reading.

Seed Saver's Exchange is another good site--also Select Seeds, Seeds of Change, Chiltern Seeds, Theodore Payne Foundation.

The New England Wildflower Society and the North American Rock Garden Society also have extensive seed lists for their members.

That should be enough to start :-)

aloha~ thats a nice list of seeds =) i dont have any figs, and actually i am looking for similar things, fruit and nuts. i have some sweet red cherry seeds, i am starting these off in the fridge, and i got one thats sprouting already when i checked in on them. not sure you would want this, but this is one of the only seeds i have that i think you might be interested in.. ooo plus i have a few river grape seeds, some wild grapes that i didnt start them all. i actually just got some hazel nuts to start (psyched!) but i already got them all going in the fridge too. i have considered trying to find some RAW nuts...and start them off...well experimental but i am thinking this could be a good way to get some nuts going with the actual nuts. but if you are interested in other trades you can look at my list if theres anything you want. there were a few things on your list that i would like. or if you are offering a SASBE i would gladly send one your way for some seeds. I don't have a lot of experience with seed sellers so I canÂt tell you who is reliable. What I do is work backwords. My state government web site has a list of endangered and threatened species. Find the site for your state and do searches to see which plants grow best on your property - sun, shade, wet, dry. Use that list to search for the plant names. Searches often turn up places that sell the seeds. Some sellers have sites with great information. I save the URLs and will be buying seeds and plants as my budget allows. There are a lot of sites that donÂt turn up when you search for a plant name. You could try the Garden Watchdog at DaveÂs Garden, which has reviews of plant sellers, or just search topics like Ânative plant seedsÂ, Ânative plant sellersÂ. Search Garden web also, there are many old posts about different sellers and bad or good service. I know seeds from some of our endangered Michigan plants can be found. I have seen sellers for threatened milkweeds, queen of the prairie etc. I like reading sites like Easyliving, Prairie Moon, Oak Prairie Farms. fraser's thimblefarms had dwarf raspberry, sunlightgardens had pussytoes. With wildflowers, availability changes all the time. I think it is best to make just a small order the first time. Keep reading gardenweb and donÂt forget to copy down any good information you find. This statement was kind of funny, if you are sure it's a hybrid then it is a gamble what you'll get: "Its a neat hybrid, hope the seeds come true" I have had adventures, though, in letting pumpkins and squash grow together and then planting the seed. I had the coolest green and orange striped pumpkins one year. I save heirloom tomatoes plus beans, lettuce, cilantro, parsley, pumpkins, squash, parsley, onions, even garlic 'seed.' One set of pumpkins, after the third year the seeds were sterile I remember. I saved eggplant seeds this year from an enormous eggplant. I grow vegies from seed not just by saving them, but by being a lazy gardener. I had a good broccoli crop this year by letting last year's go to seed. I moved some small plants to a suitable spot and they have done well. I also find that the lettuce that 'grows itself' from seed usually does better than what I grow, because it starts at the optimally correct time I suppose. I tend to save bean seed mainly because there are some beans I miss when picking, and next thing you know you have some seeds. Radishes I let go to seed because that is supposed to repel bugs, but I find that the radishes from seed aren't very good. Probably hybrid parents I am guessing. Oh, and I mentioned on gardenweb that I saved tomatillo seeds from tomatillos I bought at the store, and grew them. Some Canadians wrote to me and asked if they could buy seeds from me. I sold them some, but it was funny because anyone can just buy a tomatillo and save the seeds themselves. Marcia

Wow -- is there still time for me to join in? I'm kind of a newbie but from your lists I see lots that I can send to fill wishes- so here goes. Any heuchera Coleus (black dragon or others) Columbine - single colored varieties- bright colors or an all white variety is better! Lobelias -- or other trailers for pots Black, rust or peach colored flowers for my peach garden Echinachea- other than white swan or the plain purple variety(Peach would be great) Daisies - have clara curtis, giant white, and white shasta-- my three little girls just love to cut and cut all season long and far be it from me to discourage future gardeners! Coreopsis of any variety I don't have (coreopsis I have include: pink, zagreb, seashell, mahogohny midget, moonbeam) Lavendar - Spanish Pink Forget me nots Black Eyed Susan Vine - all colors Gladiola Seeds Monarda Flowering Groundcovers -- nothing invasive like vinca or ajuga I would prefer not to get-- Daturas, Moonflowers, Four O'clocks -except for the variegated kind -would love those, Cactus, Succulents or shade lovers --other than what was listed above-- I have very little shade. Also not interested in herbs and have all my veggie seeds for next year allready.

I would NOT advise California Rare Fruit Growers. It costs 30.00 to join for a year, & the seeds look great, but I have not received one seed from them. I ordered several seeds from them the entire year I joined, & they kept on taking orders despite problems with their seed bank. They announced there would be a delay, and then shut down the seed bank, but that was after taking in about 8 months of orders. They got a new seed bank manager this year. The new seed manager started taking new orders without catching up on the old ones. I have not heard of anyone with past orders have not received their seeds.

New England Wildflower Society does have seeds available for both members and non members. Note that the season for purchasing the seeds is early in the year January, February, March. So check the site next year or you can look at the seed list for this year and it usually doesn't change much from year to year.

I love this site! It has purple, yellow, & white carrots as well as bonsai. The mix is endless and fascinating. Stuff I've never seen before and heirlooms too.
I highly recommend it for anyone who likes to have a 'talk of the town' garden! (or likes a challenge).
