Help! Need peroxide/water solution for dampening off

I have dampening off really bad in my zinnia pots. I have 72 of them planted and it is spreading. I was told to sprinkle cinnamon on them, which I didm, but it did nothing.

If someone could post the solution for misting with peroxide I would be forever grateful!

Also, does anyone have the measurements of using peroxide to sprout daylily seeds?

Hi Tina, I don't know of the peroxide solution you're looking for but I have some experience with damping off. There is a product called "No Damp Off" which is suppose to work miracles, but I haven't been able to find it in my area. I tried the cinnamin thing last year. It didn't help a bit (nothing like the smell of mold and cinnamin :P). A few things I've done this year: I have an overhead fan going on low all the time (air flow seems to help); don't water plants from above - let the water seep in from the bottom of the container. I also have been putting a layer of spaghum (sp)moss on the tops of the soil of my seedlings which has limited damping off significantly; I also bought a product called SAFER which is suppose to help fight off soil diseases. I have had a good experience with that so far.

"No-damp-off" is just milled sphagnum moss. I don't remember who I ordered it from--Charley's Greenhouse Supply most likely, and I ordered a 3 cu. ft. bag. I'll NEVER run out.

I do use the peroxide spray--I put 9 parts water and 1 part 3% (drugstore first aid section) hydrogen peroxide (final concentration 0.3% hydrogen peroxide) in a spray bottle. It seems to work tolerably well.

I cannot help with the spray gun plan, but I would echo what Charina said. I use a home made version of the device in this link. It is: - 5 gallon bucket - drip lines made with smallest gauge standard drip line - hole drilled in the bucket to closely match outer diameter of drip line - inside the bucket, a coupler is attached to the end of the hose. This makes the drip line flare, so that pulling on it tightens it against the hole in the bucket. - attached to the coupler is a pill bottle that has holes drilled in it. It is filled with aquarium floss (like pillow filling), that acts as a filter. - On the watering end, I have micro valves to control the flow. Basically, they are little quarter-turn valves. I can try to dig them up online if you are interested. This works great for me, BUT I am only doing individual trees and a 12' blueberry raised bed. I would guess you would need many more buckets or larger vessels. Also, larger tubing probably more akin to the PVC ones in Charina's vid. Maybe you could calculate gallons needed per sq ft? It is pretty easy to just fill up the buckets and walk away. Plus, it is a slow watering so you have less run off. Let me know is my description is confusing... I can take pictures. I use a product called "No Damp". It smells like crap, but works 100% of the time in my experiance. I mix up a somewhat strong solution for the initial watering prior to planting, then use a more mild solution for the next two waterings, and thats it! Usually by the next time they need water, we are off the No Damp and onto weak fertalizers! (Although you could add the two together, i just find it unnessisary past 3 waterings). I used to have horrible dampening off problems. Have not lost a seedling to it (and I grow several hundred) since, as long as they are treated with No damp...

The problem with all the other so-called "damp-off fixes" is that by the time one sees the need for them the damage is already done. You don't really want to try to save a damp-off infected plant even if you could as the entire system of the plant is already infected. So no, once the grower allows the growing conditions for damp-off to exist nothing, not chamomile tea or No-Damp, or peroxide, or vermiculite, or aspirin, or sand, or fungicides, or etc. is going to make much difference and they all have their own set of side effects. Once you understand what causes damp-off, the conditions that allow it to develop, then it is a simple matter to avoid creating those conditions and so preventing the damp-off. Damp-off is caused by 3 things - not counting the fungi since they are in the air all around us - too wet, too warm, and too little air circulation. 75% of it by the "too wet". No one thinks they are over-watering their seedlings but 99% of us are 99% of the time. The easy way to prove to yourself that you are over-watering is to cut your watering in half for one week and then note how much healthier your plants are. Dave

It could be that your growing area is very dry and regular watering is needed. If your experience is that this is the case I would suggest transplanting everything now to larger pots. It may not seem the thing to do but I always can skip watering for a week after potting-up. Rootbound plants may actually need watered more than daily and those should not be allowed to remain in that situation for long anyway. Your alternative solutions don't seem feasible. Maybe I don't understand your setup but why do you have those particular plants(other than tomatoes) Started nnow?

What are some of the things should I look for during the germination process using the peat planters, primarily annuals, flowers. Would also appreciate some additional advice on the use of either peroxide or tea formulas for damp off. Please advise!!
