Your pond looks gorgeous. I love your plants and your babies. In the 2nd picture, upper right hand corner, is that an umbrella palm?

A livestock tank. Buried in the ground? Or above ground? It will be very slick if they plan to actually stand in it and play in it. It would need to be cleaned out very frequently. Otherwise there will be things I would not want to subject my kids to. I grew up playing in water filled ditches and the creek. Of course we got all little itches and rashes, but we lived through it. Although my sister did get a ground itch worm in her foot, that I sure am glad I didn't get. But that was from going bare foot in the muddy yard. Any other ideas would be build a real swimming pool or take them to the beach and there's always the bathtub. Glenda

Go for it! With small kids I would make it very shallow and fill it with pond plants. Since you live on the edge of a marsh you will have frogs and toads and the occasional snake. Don't worry about the snakes as they usually will not bite unless the kids attempt to pick them up. Even so I have been bitten quite a few times since I was a kid and am no worse for the wear. As a kid my dad loved the outdoors and we were thrilled to encounter all types of "critters". It really helped me develop compassion for wildlife and it was such great fun. I think it would be great fun for your kids. Make it a family project and they can learn about responsibility as you care for the pond together. As for attracting too much wildlife- I don't think that will be a problem. You already have racoons and they usually will not be out except at dusk and dawn. Same with possums. They might visit the pond and they might wreak a little havoc with the pond plants. So plant things that are inexpensive to replace. Also if you can add a small pump and create a small waterfall you will attract birds which are great fun for the kids to watch.

The lady we bought this house from (7 yrs ago)was very helpful. She left detailed instructions and supplies. She took the time to show me how to do everything from cleaning to shutting it down for the winter and getting it up and running in the spring. I promissed her I would treat her fish as any family pet and care for them the best I could. I still have most of the fish she left. She said several of them were 5 yrs old meaning they are 12years old now. The few that I have lost have been replaced with thier babies. I could tell how much she hated leaving them. I fell in love with them right away. If you take the time to show them how important the pond has been to you I'm sure they will love it to! I hope you don't have to be pondless for long!

I hear ya CR,we went thru the same thing with neighbors quite a few years ago.We raised afghan hounds,and the kids next door were always teasing them as well.Then one day my kids came home from school and called me at work and said,"Mom you need to come home,something is wrong with alfie and sheik. I rushed home only to find our pretty blonde dogs were covered in something purple,it was also all over the chain link fence,the grass etc.I called the next door neighbor,showed it to her and asked if she knew what it was.Come to find out she had bought this big a** bottle of gentian violet in TJ,and her kids got hold of it and threw it all over the dogs. I took them to the vet,he said it wouldn't hurt them,but it would take time to wear off.I was glad they weren't hurt,but she wasn't happy when i gave her the vet bill. Kathi

Yes, that is an umbrella palm. It's done very, very well this year.

2500 gallons. Not as big as it looks in the pictures.

Wow! Just beautiful. May I ask how you get koi and lilies to coexist? I see some kind of roping around their pots? Explain, because in my dreams I would love to keep my lilies when we get koi eventually!

Are the umbrella palms in the pond or beside the pond? Are they hardy enough to survive the winter and come back each year?
I desperately need to find something I can grow in the pond. I haven't had much luck yet. I must have a green thumb in dirt, and not a 'wet' thumb for water. LOL.

The umbrella palm is in a "bog pocket"; that is, I dug a hole at the corner of the pond, down about a foot or so where there is extra liner, pushed the liner down into the hole so that the water will fill it, and placed the pot in the hole. This particular pot actually has holes in the bottom, just in case the water level should drop for some reason, it will stay moist. I put a piece of pond underlayment in the bottom of the pot to keep the soil in. The bog pocket holds it secure, even in our windy weather.

It will do well on a shelf or on a stand of some kind. Just bear in mind that they can get top heavy, especially when it's windy, so you may want to weigh it down with some rocks. I had it sitting in the stream last summer, and I'd come home from work and find it lying down almost every day.

Mine is actually a "dwarf" umbrella palm, and it is hardy zones 7 to 11. I'm just barely outside zone 7 (6b), so I take mine inside during the winter. Makes an excellent house plant, since it doesn't have to be in standing water -- just kept moist -- but I don't have room, so I keep it in a mildly heated shed, just heated enough to keep it above freezing.

I'll take a picture of it this weekend and post so you can get a better look at it.
