Suggestions for Burning Bush

I have a space next to the house, full sun, and I'm looking for the right type of Burning Bush to place there. I'd like it to get about 5 x 5 or so. Thanks for any suggestions!

I kind of doubt you'll find anyone recommending a Euonymus alatus (the species most commonly referred to as a "burning bush"), since that species is an invasive (environmentally damaging) plant in your state! There are many alternatives. Your state's extension office provides the following recommendations in a published list of invasive alternatives:

Euonymus americanus (hearts-a-bustin, American strawberry bush)
Itea virginica (Virginia sweetspire)
Rhus copallina v. latifolia 'Morton' (Prairie Flame shining sumac)
Viburnum dentatum (arrowwood viburnum)
Euonymus atropurpureus (eastern wahoo, sometimes also called burning bush)

If any of these interest you, you may want to research their appropriateness for your application (climate, size, soil conditions, etc, etc). Your local extension office might also provide valuable input about alternatives that would work well for your local (your county) conditions.

Maybe take the hedge trimmers to it at the base? Seriously, that's the size it wants to be - any interim pruning is going to be a stop-gap measure at best. And if health issues limit your ability to garden easily, removal makes more sense than needing to hack it back to a smaller size every season. FWIW, burning bush - Euonymus alatus - is a listed (severe) invasive species in KY anyway. There are so many more lovely shrubs you could choose to replace it with that would offer great fall color, still provide wildlife habitat and not be an invasive pest. Fothergilla would be high on my list.......

So i have researched the chinese pistache tree and it is incredibly beautiful with its fall/ winter colors...So now my next question is where do you buy one?!?!?! I have been all over town to different nurseries and they all tell me that they either don't know about the tree, where to find it, or even what it is. I looked at moon valley nursery, and even though they are a little pricey, they dont have it and they said that the best they could offer is the Sweetgum tree...So (1) Does ANYONE who has a Chinese Pistache know where to buy one and (2)Does anyone know about the sweetgum tree? I've got an area with some soon-to-be-removed burning bush, and it is also near what I think is a seasonal stream [thank you for that term: I didn't know _what_ to call the strange soggy area that runs north-south across one section of my property. It was dry during last summer's drought, but wet last spring, and this spring you can actually hear the water trickling through the grass.] Coincidentally, I had just amended some of the clay soil and installed an elderberry and a shrub variety of willow two weeks ago, and discovered after recent rains that they were swimming in water. Digging a trench to drain away that water resulted in a series of equally full trenches. I now want to find natives that would be happy in this area [I don't mind adding peat and compost]. Hearing that viburnum, clethra and amelanchier would be happy there is wonderful news. Now I just have to find nurseries near Baltimore that stock the genuine articles.... [If you haven't guessed, this is only my first full year in this garden; lots of work to do, and lots of lawn to turn into something more useful!]

Not a disease for burning bush. How long has it been in the ground? If planted only recently, the rootball can either be sopping or too dry. Stick an finger in it to learn which is the case. Same for the spirea. When you plant it, rig temporary shade. If it was fully leaved out when you untangled the roots, it needs considerable time to recover. By the way, also rig shade for the burning nush.

i could send you a couple dozen of the invasive ones.. that the birds planted for me.. if i had no ethics ...

trust me.. you can do SO MUCH BETTER... as per brandons list ...
