I haven't tried 'S&S Supreme' but have grown Prunus laurocerasus 'Zabeliana', 'Green Wonder', and 'Otto Luyken' in various settings over the last 10 years. My 'Green Wonder' looks like plain old Skip Laurel to me, and I've never seen that cultivar anywhere else. Here's my experience. The shothole disease is usually worst at the garden centers due to the watering schemes used there -- overhead sprinkling, etc. Once the laurels are planted in the ground, they usually fare much better. After becoming established, they have done well for me both in full sun and in very dense, dry shade. The worst problem has been with 'Otto Luyken' shrubs used in a foundation planting underneath eaves. In a very wet year, the shothole problem returned. In a dry year, such as 2007 has been here, you wouldn't know that there ever could be a shothole problem. I think it helps, once the shrubs grow larger, to do some careful summer pruning to allow air flow. If you water them, don't spray the leaves. It also helps quite a bit with these laurels to get the planting hole and the soil correct from the beginning. They need moisture, but they absolutely have to have good drainage or they will develop leaf drop and other problems. Ally_ld, my 'Green Wonder' grows directly under power lines in a hickory grove, well-drained, and it does well without much attention. If we have a rainy summer like 2003 again (I'm near your area), there could be trouble. Otherwise, I never notice shothole on it.

cut it to 3 inches ... and see how it responds next spring ... what do you have to lose??? google tells me its a flowering plum ... i have had 3 or 4 over the years... 10 years was about the max i ever got them to live ... mine were in tree form.. and failed due to black knot and/or gummosis ...... which is probably just about what bboy said ... i would cut it to the ground to watch how it responds.. simply out of curiosity .. and experiment ... and if it failed.. i would dig it out next fall .. or late summer... whenever i crossed the line into pure hatred.. lol ... if you are NOT of that type.. just be done with it ... ken

Flora, thanks for the info. I do need to keep that in mind because my cousin's cows and another cousin's horses periodically get out of the pastures (we've got pasture on 3 sides of us) and get into our gardens.

Accolade is quite hardy, and grows larger than Hally Jolivette. I haven't observed many HJ's but my impression is that they're relatively susceptible to insect/disease problems, at least under Midwest growing conditions. A couple other cherries that are quite hardy are Sargent and Snow Goose, but the latter has white rather than pink flowers.
