How are you all doing?

Hope everyone is ok this morning, I understand that there were a few tornadoes last night in Kansas, and the Ozarks. We're fine here, just some minor wind damage that we can fix.

As far as I know, everything is fine in my yard in SE Kansas, but the local university is shut down for the day due to power problems from last night--whatever that means. That wind that passed through was definitely notable but only lasted about 10 minutes. Very strange.

Glad to hear MO gardeners are doing fine also.

I don't know about the university either, maybe just precautions, or the antennae for the radio station; but we did have a power outage for our whole area last night for about 6 hours. Lots of sheet metal in the fields and in town as well. I haven't heard too much about the Branson area.

Last year, my first trading, I did over 80 trades, including many SASBEs. After a couple of round robins I had some seeds to trade and would offer to trade when I responded to the SASBE. Most did not want more seeds but some responded turning the SASBE into a regular trade. With encouragement from other posters I started collecting seeds which enlarged my exchange list. This year I have done only 20 trades as now have more seeds than I can ever use in my own gardens and share with family, friends and neighbors. I have also responded to a couple of SASBEs for specific seeds that I wanted. Occasionally I will initiate a trade after reading a posting regarding seeds that I would like. Bakeman, though I did not get seeds from your Newbie project, (I was no longer a newbie by the time I found out about trading) I do admire you for all the time and efforts that you spend in the Newbie Seed Project. Thanks to those of you who share your bounty through SASBEs. I have not offered general SASBE but have privately responded to those in need/Newbies to share, passing it on.

We were just told that the power outage today is weather related (this time). Still...3'4's of the downtown area is without power and it's only 30 now at 8:15. So, hopefully your inlaw's aren't affected by this outage, Beaver. If they are....they can go to any casino or shelter to get warm,etc...one of these days I would like to meet them!! My husband is volunteering at the sherriff's dept again. Oh-We found out that the outage on Saturday was caused by some morons who thought it would be cute to shoot out the power line to Las Vegas!!!! Unbelievable to think we have these kinds of people out here. Maria: I haven't looked to closely at my plants yet. My palm tree got hit bad with the first frost in Oct/Nov...I am really hoping it'll make it through this. My container roses look like ----- now. We had 2" of ice on spa yesterday. We have the filters on the pool at night...then we switched to the spa...after breaking up the ice,etc...got some foam layered boards to put on top of it and plywood on top of that with cinder blocks too. Hopefully, it'll keep it from getting ice again. Pool & spa equipment is fine. We did have a sprinkler valve bust yesterday...Dan quickly fixed that. Hopefully this is the last of the sloppy work by an unlicensed landscaper who knows nothing about installing sprinklers. We have learned from his mistakes. My husband Dan is from Minnesota....he is beginning to do things to the house & yards for this cold weather that normally would be done there and not here. LOL. Beaver-please take your cold weather back...we have had enough!! Oh, it is funny but I've had these 3-4 hummingbirds at the house ever since we moved here in 2005. No hummer shelter yet...LOL. I thought they would migrate too. I suppose they are spoiled now. Take care and stay warm Maria...geez we will laugh at this in July. Beca~

Hi Karen, It is raining! My pots are outside right now up against the garage wall. The overhang (roof) from the garage gives them a bit of protection. Yesterday, I put out two brugmansia pots to get some sun -- I forgot to bring them in and hope the rain didn't knock down the buds and blooms on them :-( There is always something! Going to see The Wicked today at 1 PM; hope the rain doesn't create a problem with us getting there.

Hi june, thanks for checking in. I feel the same exact way as you.I used to be very kind and outgoing now I just don't feel like talking to anyone and I also think im a downer.I have gotten to the state where I dont even want to speak to my husbands family. I hate to be mean but they get on my nerves its like they want to compete with me on who he loved more. I know he loved us all the same.I celebrated his birthday on oct 8th and I did good at the cemetery but when they made me leave for the night I fell apart and have not been able to get myself back together. I dont understand this grieving stuff it stinks, I get back to the point where I just want to be with him.Its just so hard without him and with the holidays coming up im real scared.But I love to speak with you guys it really helps.June you are always in my thoughts. I hope we both get thru this. hugs tracy

It was really windy last night in Chicagoland. My radio lost transmission, and I thought it was broken. There are litter everywhere. I don't pick up bottles to clean up the neighborhood, after my brother, an emergency room physician notified us about "homemade bomb", made by aluminum and "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner placed inside a bottle - explode when touched. Here's more info.:

Good safety info that I never heard of; be careful and watch the video if you don't believe it. Anything with sodium hydroxide (lye) reacts with aluminum to release hydrogen gas and an explosion:

Pay attention to this.

1. a plastic bottle with a cap.
2. a little Drano.
3. a little water.
4. a small piece of foil.
5. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!!
6. No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc..

People are finding these bombs in mailboxes and in their yards, just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the trash. But, you'll never make it!!! It takes about 30 seconds to blow after you move the thing.

Strawberry, thank you for the info, I do pick up trash that escapes the trashman's truck, and those cans left by those weekend binges; better to know and be safe.

Seriously winding here, even had a tornado watch until late into the evening. Got some more rain and other people stuff in my yard.

Lots of wind, rain, and hail here in Knoxville
I heard three people in a couple of counties over were killed by tornados :(
