OMG DONT SPRAY THE YARD you will kill not only the toads, baby birds in the nest because the parents will feed them poisoned bugs but you will kill all the good bugs for your yard. I wish they would outlaw that stuff. Take your dogs to the vet and get the REAL stuff and they will be fine. If you have been using grocery store or pet store stuff you are probably also killing your dogs. Don't believe me go to the pets forum and see what harm this stuff has done to beloved pets. I once bought a flea spray that was suposed to be "top of the line" from petsmart my poor dogs got a rash, wouldnt eat and started wetting on the floor. Never trust a flea tick med thats not from the vet.

I think it's worth asking at the vet. Doubtful you'd need an apt, just walk in.
I'd suggest guinea fowl, but they'd proabbly eat the toads too.

How about "Program" or whatever those monthly dog pills are called? It will break the cycle at least on the dogs, and your poor dogs do need a break.
I bet the little toads start out by eating things small as flees....

I've always heard that toads & frogs can keep insect populations in-check.

I know toads/frogs eat alot of bugs. I would wonder about fleas though. Seems to me, they'd be alot of trouble for such a small snack. But, I do know this. So far, I have counted 46 baby toads. Maybe, the fleas will do me the favor of jumping in the toads mouths. Stupid things.

Vickie, I live about 20 miles from your town in the country I had problems with fleas bad this year to the Frontline wasnt working on the dogs at all this year I went to my vets Monday (Arlington Animal Clinic on Arlington). They told me that the Comfortis was working very well its a chewable tablet they take 1 once a month and it start killing fleas in 30 minutes after taking it. I bought one for each of my dogs and gave them to my dogs as soon as I got back home. Two to three hours later I check them and all most all the fleas was dead and by that evening they didnt have one flea on them. As of today they still dont have any fleas on them. Told my dad about it on Tuesday and he got a tablet for his dog that day and as of yesterday when I talk to him his dog didnt have any fleas either....Teresa

I have used frontline for years and have fairly good, consistent results, but I do see the occasional flea. Keep in mind that frontline doesn't kill the fleas immediately that get on your dog, but if you see one on there, they are well on their way to dead.

My vet told me that I have to spray my yard to really completely control them, but I am just not willing to do that. So far I have no more trouble than seeing the occasional that I am hoping is indeed on its way out.

Frontline is not without issues, but I am not willing to have my dogs suffer form the fleas nor have them set up housekeeping in my house, so I live with that risk. I don't spray anything else around here for anything. I was shocked with all the wildlife that showed up when 'installed' the backyard, which was previously one big asphalt pad. Apparently if you plant, they'll come. I would love to have guineas, but that won't work in the city. Not sure I could live with all the noise and such anyway.

We use a product called "Revolution" which is prescribed by the vet for the prevention of fleas, ticks and heartworm from mosquitos, on/in dogs.
You just apply it to the neck area, behind of the dogs head, once a month, over the offending insects active season [May through September in our case].

As far as your toads go, you may wish you did not have 46 [if they all survive?] toads in your yard next spring, when the males start screaming out their mating call.LOL

Wow Hardin that is terrible. I have a dog that is severely allergic to fleas. We use Sentinal pill for the dogs. But if she visits a place where there are fleas and gets a few fleas before they can drop off her after they have died from her flea poisoned blood she is in misery. So the Vet has me put the topical Advantage on her. This stays on her hair and skin. We have only had to do this a few times over the last few years and it works. So I suggest asking your vet about that. Otherwise I guess you can capture and relocate as many toads as you can and then spray the yard. Not the best plan but the dogs come first.

You do not want to use cheap grocery store topical flea products like Hartz or Bio spot. You want to use Frontline, Advantage, Revolution the prescription ones you get from the vet. You can also get them cheaper online at 800 Pet Meds.com or Drs. Foster & Smith. They sell them at Petco now too. Many livestock feed stores carry them as well. They are expensive but those cheaper products have a long history of making pets sick.

Spraying the yard is a temporary fix and may be harmful to your kids and pets not to mention wildlife.

Vacuum the house thoroughly. You can put a flea collar in the bag, they are better there than on the dog.

Wash the dogs bed in hot water. Use a fine flea comb on the dog as well. Dip it is soapy water to kill the fleas if you find them.

To Horton: Re: Mating calls. Call me Lucky, but I am hard of hearing. But, my hubby isn't, so he may be in for it. LOL. But then again, if I am luckier, maybe I will hear them.

To everyone else, thanks for all the recommendations on things for the dogs. Figured out real quick the stuff from Walmart isn't worth the bother. I didn't know there were so many products out there.
The flea collar in the vacuum bag sounds like an excellent idea. That is one of those tips that make you say, "Well, duh." ROTFL :)

Hmmm, you could try spreading diatomaceous earth in the yard, IDK ... I've not used it, I've just heard of it.

My poor rat terrier is allergic to fleas & gets bad, poor thing.

We can't use Revolution on our cat. It made her sick for three days. We don't have a flea problem this year but I expect it to come one day. Treating the yard with something that inhibits the lifecycle can give excellent results but it is normally used indoors on rugs and furniture. Sandy

I use revolution and it works fine on my cat. It doesn't bother him at all. You have to make sure you apply it to the back of the neck where the cat can't lick.

The vet applied it. Sandy
