Good for you for reading up on phals and light, Jessie. Your orchid will thank you with lots of flowers. That's a beautiful phal, looks like Newberry Parfait to me. It will produce flowers for you for many years if you give it the proper care. As someone above mentioned, the most important thing in that care is the right amount of light. I know you don't want to hear it, but your phal is not getting any high quality light from that fish tank lamp. First of all, light intensity is less at the ends of the fixture than in the middle. Then your orchid isn't under the light at all, but off to the side. Basically, it is in darkness. Don't leave it there for more than a month. In my experience, even a month under such low light can severely compromise the roots, and it takes some skill and plenty of time to re-root it. You need to acclimate it to more light in your south windows gradually-- start off a couple of feet from the window, and move gradually forward 6" closer to the window at a time. If the sun shines directly on the leaves at any point, you need to feel the leaves after half an hour or so, to make sure they are not getting hot. The heat from sun is what damages the leaves, and the damage is irreversible. If the leaves are cool or barely warm, it is okay where it is, and you can chance another move closer in a few days. Phals can't take direct overhead sun, but in a house, that overhead sun is cut off by the ceilings. When slowly accustomed to more light over a period of time, I have found phals can take quite a bit of sun in a sunny window, especially with a fan running. It's not really to find out how much they can "take", but that the amount and quality of growth and blooms are directly related to light. In good light, they grow wonderfully, and bloom their little heads off. In fact, all the specialist vendors say: "To initiate blooms, increase the light." Good luck.

I'm not the most experienced rose gardener (though I am an experienced _gardener_) but I'll go ahead and take a shot. First, I'm not so sure about fertilizing with Osmocote right away--I use organic fertilizers myself, specifically Roses Alive! from Gardens Alive!, and I admit that with that I do mix it right into the soil, but I've heard others say that some chemical fertilizers are not a good idea with new plants, though that may be more for bareroot plants. Next, unless the roses in question are hybrid musks or some other variety that can tolerate semi-shade like the Buck rose Country Dancer, I would definately put roses in the full sun and not a semi-sunny spot. Actually, since they are potted, it might be best to leave them there just a few days until they adjust to being repotted, but then I would find a place in as full sun as possible. The roses will be happier and happier roses are better resistant to diseases. I also confine myself to the allegedly organic methods of disease control, and in the last couple of years I've tried them all. I haven't had much luck controlling blackspot with Neem, though I know others have reported success. I'll go ahead and add the bacterial control sometimes sold under the brand name Serenade as another I've had poor luck with. What has worked better for me is the Copper soaps and the Sulpher-based solutions. But you do need to go ahead any apply it now, and continue doing so on a very regular basis, to avoid the worst cases of blackspot--if you wait until it show symptoms the rose will have a harder and longer recovery. To be honest, even then you are likely to have some blackspot, though hopefully not enough to kill your enjoyment of the roses or weaken the roses themselves too much. Again, the variety of rose is important--some roses are much more resistant to fungal diseases than others. Two other comments on rose care--once roses start growing and hopefully blooming, they do appreciate rather more water and fertilizer than other plants of a similar size might. Are you planning on keeping them in pots? I am forced to do all my gardening in pots due to my current living arrangements, but some varieties of roses are better than others in containers. I keep bugging my friends, coworkers, and casual aquantances to take the roses that have outgrown my pots as gifts, but I've had only limited success with this as they all seem to most want the roses I actually want to keep :). By the way, what size are the pots you have them in? I use 16" pots myself, the kind that are deep as possible, though I have several roses that are in their second year that will soon need to be placed in 20" pots if I can't give them away. If you have yours in anything smaller than 16", I've found that the rose will outgrow it very quickly unless it is a miniature or something very slow growing. If the rose is underpotted, it will again become stressed and be unhappy/unhealthy.

Welcome, want2plant! : ) I'm glad you decided to post--newbies shouldn't be afraid to ask gardeners for help, because all gardeners were once newbies. And it's great that you want to call your plant the correct name--as you've already experienced, lots of folks get these confused and call them the wrong name, and thus just confuse even more people. Here's another good visual to help you determine which one you have. Notice the SHAPE of the leaves, as well as the direction the flowers point: This is an Angel's Trumpet: This is a Datura (Devil's Trumpet, but I don't use that name): . The brug's leaves are like ovals, but pointy on one end. The datura leaves have more curves to them--sort of a ruffle look. It can be slightly confusing to hear that brug flowers point down, and daturas point up--while that is true, the flowers don't always point STRAIGHT up or down one some varieties--some flowers will decide to point sideways, sometimes. If you're not sure if your flowers are pointing up or down, I suggest you look at the BUDS that have not opened but look like they are ready to open soon. The datura buds point up, the brug buds point down. Personally, I don't see buds on either plant point sideways, unless a leaf is propping it up or something. Did that help?
