OK, does your dining room look like this?

And does your living room window look like this?

This is all Chemocurl's fault! I wasn't going to raise very many plants from seed because I don't really have a good place in my house for them. But then Sue wanted a few seeds that I had and I wanted, well maybe just a few more that she had, and then she sent me Quite a Few more tantalizing selections that I couldn't just ignore. So how can I get help before my whole house is filled with pots and flats!? Is there a treatment center for this addiction? Perhaps a treatment center with a greenhouse...? ;)

From a confirmed seed starting junkie, make up a light rack for your Christmas present and put it in front of a sunny window. Do the thing right.....lights, wire shelving unit,timer and heating mat. In the end it looks better and produces better and it keeps it all in one place. And the mate likes it in one spot.

Best thing I ever did. Keeps me happy playing with it all winter. And I get great plants.

No, my dining room table doesn't look like that, but my kitchen table does. Mine didn't start out in front of the woodburner, but on top of the fridge, freezer, hot water heater, heat mat and dryer when its on. My living room window doesn't look like that, but the sewing room window and other places in the sewing room and bedroom (with additional lighting) will. Just planted over 150 seeds yesterday and that's just part of the tomatoes and two small batches of herbs. Yes, it is addictive. Yes, my DH is interrupting by wanting to take me out to eat today. Yes, I will take him up on it. :) But I will be looking forward to getting back home and planting more. I want my whole house full of plants so later I will have a garden full of plants plus extras to give to others. Love this addiction and won't go to a treatment center even if there were a greenhouse. We garden addict have to stand together. Seek out help from the rest of us when you are feeling weak. LOL!

I believe, in some way, that is what we all do. There is a lot of research going on about inter- and intra-species communication. Whales, dolphins, apes, elephants are common examples. Bees dance, moths produce pheromones, walnut trees make juglone. We humans, with our hubris, think we understand to a certain extent what this all means - where are you? - that's mine! - stay away - why don't you come over and see me sometime? - but that's all purely conjecture. All of us "listen" to our plants, in the sense that if we see what we interpret as non-ideal growth, at least for our purposes, we imagine that the plant is "telling us something". By watering and adding compost and all of our other actions, we're "telling" them that we care about their welfare. I talk to my plants all the time. Usually it's a pretty pleasant conversation. They frequently enjoy listening to This American Life with me, or some Afro-Celt Soundsystem, while we're spending time together. Some of the things I say to them though can't be printed in forums like this without the risk of offending some human sensibilities... the plants may not like what I'm saying, but my compost pile gets a big kick out of it ;^)

and you really should follow through with your plan.... the one and only precaution I can even think of, as far as being a Big Brother, is that to choose places that would be within any medical help, should either of you need it. save the fishing at a lake, in a remote area, for if you have a family close by, or medical things somewhere close. not to ever suggest it, but hey, even in the best of circumstances, it's always good to have what's necessary and someone who knows how to handle it. being alergic to bees, too....if the kid should be...you know, you'd have the bee kit...and on and on.... and now, to the point.... there is no age limit, as long as the agency approves.. a kid, is a kid, is a kid, who wants attention, affection, to learn from someone, who will take the time to share of themselves and to be appreciated. in turn, they learn how to share of themselves, and to appreciate others. the circle can only be made stronger. I have a son, who needed a big brother, as he was growing up..he and I couldn't be in the same room... we had a neighbor, who rather became a big brother, minus the agency...they fished together, here in the neighborhood..they built things... my boy could go to him, when he would have liked to run away from home, from me. he never needed to run...he had options. be that Big Brother to some boy.. for the rest of their life, they will remember simple things, which will then manifest into bigger memories, for when they either become a father or uncle or later maybe, a Big Bother for someone else. and going on 58 is no closed gate... I'm headed for 61 and still kicking around the thought of fostering a baby, who's at the hospital, right now, from being born to a meth mom.. I have no idea of who the mom or baby is, but I'm still giving it some thought....the little girl is less than a week old and has virtually nothing going for her...mom's in jail...... Do It....and don't look back........except to wave, at everyone, to show how much fun you're having!!! Becky .(*_*).

I am drooling at all your options...Seems like you can't lose; any of them would be gorgeous. Price of the wood counters will depend on where you get them (IKEA or Lumber Liquidators vs specialty companies like John Boos or Grothouse), the wood species you choose, and whether you have the lumber flat/slab, edge grain, or end grain. I would start by looking at IKEA, JohnBoos.com, and Glumber.com. One question I have is where is your main sink? What counter are you comfortable with having around it? I know people do wood counters around the main sink, and I have a Waterlox finished wood counter on my island with our prep sink, and so far, no problems, but it would still make me, personally, a bit nervous to have wood by the main sink. I don't like to put in materials that I might have to sternly police to keep them in decent shape...In other words, I don't want to install something that might result in me feeling I had to yell at my kids all the time. I wanted my kitchen to be a place where my kids would want to be and work on cooking/baking projects, rather than a place where Mom goes crazy about the countertop upkeep. :-) Here is a link that might be useful: Grothouse wood counters

Thanks for this thread. I’ve been taken to task, and learned a few things here, while trying to work through some ideas and idiosyncrasies on our current build. At the end of the day, I think we all want something that works for our current situation, isn’t an ugly disaster, and can be attractive for resale at some point down the road. It’s a tightrope act, for sure! My “sins”: We walk through our master closet to reach the master bath. I have a lower level “drive under” garage, but also have a main level carport/patio around back, directly attached to my kitchen, should anyone doubt my ability to carry up groceries. . I have 2 bathrooms with doors to the outside, the master, and a guest bath. (Both exiting poolside.) Said guest bath also connects to my laundry room. It’s my way of minimizing the wet towel problem, and I refuse to apologize. Call it an overreaction, but I’ve lived for 14 years with wet people and towels entering my master bedroom or living room (the closest doors from our current swimming hole.) I’m over it. I may even put a fingerprint lock on the door into my master bath.

haha...GardenWeb IS the treatment center. ;-) Looks like a nice setup to me. I'm using the kitchen bar shelf, top of a cabinet & 2 windowsills in the 3rd bedroom...lol

LOL I just had to laugh when I read this thread ... yes , my dining room table looks like that ... I showed that pic to my SO and he just smirked at me and said UH HUH ... luckily I have a potting shelf and 8 shelves w/ shop lights in my garage so eventually I will get the seeds cleared off our dining room table ;-) yes I admit it ... I am addicted and I love it ! ;-)

For me, it's our utility room in the basement. We have hot water heat in the house, and that's where the boiler is... I've made light shelves very nearby to take advantage of the heat. I also have a greenhouse out back and some huge cold frames. I'm already running out of room, and I still have 6 weeks before the end of the frost season...

And I work full time with a teenager still at home...

One has to be addicted to go through these pains.

What a fabulous post! I love it!

To answer your question, yes and no. I made a commitment to myself that I would only start ONE FLAT this year (I just do flowers, no veggies). Of course that didn't stop me from thinning and repotting, so I have more than one flat now.

One flat is easy. We have an east facing bay window for 3-4 hours of morning sun, and a sun room w/south, west and north facing windows for the remainder of the day. It's no biggy to move the flat 3 times a day. But now that they are going into individual pots, I'm going to rival your pics. lol

We have a large dining room with a very large bow window and every year I set up a table in front of the window so last nite I asked "permission" to set this up on the weekend. Right now I have everything set up in the attic but I need to transplant some seedlings into bigger containers so need more room. I have about 24 "tidal wave" petunias in 4" pots, another container with about 36 petunia cuttings that I'm rooting, Canna lilies in various sized containers, approx 24 Oriental lilies, a tray of pansies so I'm stressed out cause I need to transplant about 48 Foxgloves. So, come Sunday, yes it will look like yours. Looks good to me! Stan

Hahahaha. My bedroom looks like that. . . and my kitchen. . . . and my bathroom. . . . and my deck. I share your addiction. Seed starters anonymous?

You should see my library. I took out all the "mobile" furniture and hung my two huge homemade LED grow chambers -- one with mostly blue light and the other with mostly red -- each lined with aluminum foil curtains. It looks like the aliens have arrived. ;)
