Major mistake!

It is become extremely apparent that I really only have a slight grasp on what I am doing when it comes to starting seeds. I made a mistake and planted, in my burpee starting kit, flowers and vegetables that do not have coinciding germination times. I have very tall morning glory plants with their first set of true leaves. Does anyone think I will be ok transplanting them and putting them by a very bright window? I ask because I need to lower my growing light for my peppers, onion, gazania, and zinnia seedlings.

I have realized just today, that I think I have done the same mistake - I have sqash and zucchini that are going to totally take over the peppers and tomatoes! I have never done this before, so live and learn I guess. I do not have a grow light ...so I am going to have to figure out other options for light other than the window....

Not knowing how close your seeds are planted, it should be possible to remove the Morning Glories and transplant them to larger pots. With those plants removed, lower your lights to about 2 inches above the other seedlings. Put the Morning Glories in the best light possible. A bright window is most likely that.

I'm no expert, but thought I'd share my experience. I think some plants can handle an early transplant, and some can't. Things that tend to be relatively fast-growing don't seem to mind a transplant before their first leaves. But I transplanted a few tuberous begonia (super slow growing) seedlings when they were very, VERY tiny because they had some how sprung up in a clump on the very edge of the container they were in, and were getting dislodged when the container moved. Those guys are still struggling and I don't know if they'll pull through; it appears to be transplant shock, their little leaves are brown, though the new leaves they've sprouted are green. In contrast, the other seedlings from that container grew their first true leaves and were at least twice the size of the little guys, and they've been transplanted without any trouble. It almost seems like, if they still have just that one baby root with no offshoots, they might not stand transplanting as well as seedlings with more developed roots. Just my little bit of experience, ymmv. :) I do struggle, like you, with seedlings germinating and sprouting at different rates, but I guess in your situation, unless you could possibly steal a light or two from outside, I'd sacrifice a little legginess to let them grow some roots before I pricked them out.

I can offer this advice - I live in San Francisco, and my neighbor has a fuchsia that his father planted, thinks it may be 100 years old growing in the shade on our shared fence. Our soil is VERY sandy - It rarely gets above 80 here, and I can always feel the moisture (only 3 miles from the sea). I lived in Sacramento before and couldn't grow a fuchsia to save my life. Here, I had one in a pot in the front yard I had forgotten about, started ripping it out thinking it was a weed stopped myself in realization. a year later it's fine - I think a lot of it has to do with just the moisture in the air, sandy (loose) soil and cooler temps. there is a fuchsia nursery in Pacifica right on the sea that has some of the most amazing fuchsia's I've ever seen. Maybe one of those outside mister things for the hot days there? best of luck to you though!

I hate being difficult but I told them I would only be happy with the whole order being remade. Is that unreasonable? What would you do? You might be being just a "bit" unreasonable. If they think they can match the original shipment, then let them. But let them know if it's even a shade off it's not acceptable. If they can't meet that criteria, then they need to remake the whole order. Let THEM make the decision, based on the fact that the order won't be accepted until that criteria is met.

ssmith50 - the title of your post is very accurate. Emphasis on MAJOR. Just for clarity, it appears you have a downdraft exhaust system behind your cooktop. That's what it certainly looks like to me. Whether or not that is powerful enough to capture cooking effluvia and pull it all down into the vent is not clear. For that we would need to know the CFM (cubic feet per minute) draw of the downdraft. That can be something like 400 or 600 etc. Do you have that info in your kitchen files -- would likely be on the spec sheet or the user manual. However, that's not the major issue I see. The issue is that whoever "designed" your kitchen or did the planning installed the oven below the cooktop. That's one thing that's pushing you away from accessing the cooktop because it's causing you to stand at least 3 inches away to begin with. It also appears that the cooktop was plunked down in the center of the counter so it didn't conflict with the front of the oven. The cooktop should be installed near the front of the island on the working side. Mine, f.ex. is installed 2-3/4" from the edge of the cabinet. It's an impossible installation. I'm sorry to say this -- heck I'm sorry to see this -- a major change would be needed on the island to make that workable. I'm 5'7" and would have a hard time with that set up. Why have you started your seeds already? New to this also, and I was planning on waiting until about 2 months before our last frost. Except for wintersowing the perennials outside. I have tons of annuals and special plants, but don't think I would have the room to grow them under lights for an extra month or so.
Am I wrong or should I have already started my annuals. I did start a bunch of cannas only because I hope to have them bloom this year.

I have exhaustively researched growing from seed. I have made some mistakes so far and I guess you can only learn from them. I planted sunflowers for heavens sake and also some morning glory seeds. They both germinated very early and are growing like mad. In this case, I planted way to early. The seed packets tell you when to plant, and for these two it said to sow directly into the ground after the last frost. I am hoping that I can keep these growing until it warms up a bit. So in closing, you are right about sowing to early, but for zinnias, gazanias, some vegetables, it is the right time to sow and place them under light.

Lee, it's not time for zinnias or gazania in zone 5. Bartles what zone are you in? Regardless of your zone, in my opinion you need to adjust your start dates. Zinnias and morning glory are a couple of the last seeds I start. I've keeped a log for years of the 80 or so types I start from seed. I still make adjustments at planting time but the list is getting pretty dialed in. All seeds are started in basement and moved to a greenhouse with cool night temps. Let me know if you would like any other dates. I usually push the seed package start date a week or 2 so I have a nice plant to put out and not a 2" seedling. Hope this helps, adjust for your zones. I usually plant the 1st or 2nd week of May. Gary

Thanks Gary!! I was really starting to worry that I was behind. You know how it is once you get the seeds, you start to itch just looking at them!! Thanks to winter sowing at least I can get a few thousand perennials started in advance instead of trying to do it all at once. Recently bought a property with almost 2 acres of land so I need alot of plants this year. Hopefully next year will be mostly add ins and annuals.
