What size container is it in at the present time? 20 gallons seems like a bit of a leap for a 3 foot avocado. Oftentimes, when a typical potting medium is used (like your MG), an overly large container can result in a stagnant root environment. There is considerable information about potting mixes in this forum. If you spend a bit of time reading some older threads, you'll find all sorts of possibilities. However, the majority of us have learned that by adding some simple amendments to a typical potting medium, you can create something that your plants will thrive in. The incorporation of pine bark fines, Turface MVP, perlite, and/or similiar ingredients will help you create something that is fast draining, and conducive to a healthy and vigorous root system.

My home grown avacados have been in the ground 6 years this year. One produced last year. After flowering profusely it gave me precisely 3 avocados. LOL, better than nothing. The other tree looks like it might flower this year. I currently have 1 homegrown and 1 grafted tree in bloom, and 1 homegrown and 1 grafted not blooming. Go figure. It's more to do with the Type (A or B) that you have growing on when it begins to flower. Expect very little fruit the first year as during the maturation of the fruit the tree will drop what it can not handle. Water like always, fertilize lightly (if you overfertilize you might stimulate green growth and the tree will abort more fruit) and cross your fingers! Can't wait to see the fruit of your labor. But... the odds would be against you, ken. White oaks are pretty compatible across their section, but the red/black group...not really reliably compatible, even on their own seedlings, and not at all on members of the white oak group. But... with some genera - or even families - you can get by...I've successfully grafted apple onto pear(not long lived, but successful for a few years), pear onto hawthorn (15 years and counting), plum and peach onto P.tomentosa(Nanking cherry), and quince has historically been used as a dwarfing understock for pear and medlar. Googling up 'shower tree'...it's Cassia fistula...not graft compatible with mango or avocado, so far as I'm aware...

Yep, that's true. I have a Manilla Mango tree that was grown from seed that will take several years to fruit. This one I was hoping that the leaves could be used to identify the kind of Mango since they are quite different looking than the Manilla. My best guess was a Keitt from what I've seen, but was wondering if there were any other identifying features that would provide more insight. Thanks for your info though!
