Grafting trees - shower tree + mango + avocado

Hi,

The house Im about to buy has a shower tree right in the middle of the yard. We were hoping to cut it short and use the stomp to add mango and avocado grafts. I have no experience with grafting trees so I wonder if that's possible... or can I only graft like plants together, like lime and orange etc? Are any fruit trees compatible with a shower tree?

convert to the latin names of all.. and do your research with those names....

generally speaking.. if the first latin names match ... then there is a chance they can be grafted ... if not.. the odds are probably long ..

for example if i was considering grating a beech to an oak ... i would note that fagus is not quercus... so they are not in the same family ... but if i wanted to try a red oak on a white oak.. or vise versa.. then there MIGHT be odds since both are quercus .....

But... the odds would be against you, ken. White oaks are pretty compatible across their section, but the red/black group...not really reliably compatible, even on their own seedlings, and not at all on members of the white oak group.

But... with some genera - or even families - you can get by...I've successfully grafted apple onto pear(not long lived, but successful for a few years), pear onto hawthorn (15 years and counting), plum and peach onto P.tomentosa(Nanking cherry), and quince has historically been used as a dwarfing understock for pear and medlar.

Googling up 'shower tree'...it's Cassia fistula...not graft compatible with mango or avocado, so far as I'm aware...

I didn't notice a fragrance at all when I took the photos, though I didn't anticipate the tree being a Magnolia, so I didn't smell the bloom. If it is indeed a Magnolia x alba, as another poster suggested -- and from looking that type of tree up online, I think it is -- it definitely should emit a nice, potent fragrance, especially in the evenings. Several articles even liken the smell to Juicy Fruit gum (!). I guess I'll find out if it's true when I move in in a few weeks! Thanks everyone!

Im growing Avacados and Mangos in Florida in the ground. We are in So. Florida. Trees are 1 1/2 yrs old and have tripled in size. They are planted in pure sand. No mulch, no nothing. We hardly water them because we do not have sprinklers and only use water for the flowers. Being new to these trees, my guess is they like to grow roots in a very well drained media (sand). They go dry for months on end. Of course, in a container, your can't let they dry out like Florida. I would repot in Spring. Get them out of coco fibre and plant in something that drains quickly. You could use a potting soil and mix a bag of perlite into it so you get good drainage. That's the easy way I would probably take. You could also mix some pine bark into MG potting mix (or whatever you like) and add perlite to that. My trees are growing in full Florida sun. These trees need strong light. Good luck, Jane

Mangos have a lot of feeder roots near the surface so they'll have to compete with the ferns. Also, that much growth under the mangos could raise the humidity and promote anthracnose fungus.

None of the three kinds you asked about will be able to grow together as grafts.

For other readers here shower tree in suitable climate regions is Cassia.
