best gloves for pruning

It seems overwhelming-there are quite a few gloves with gauntlets out there for pruning. Synthetics (West County) Bionic, American Heritage (goatskin with Cowhide gauntlets), etc. I'd appreciate feedback from those of you who have found comfort, protection against thorns, suppleness. They're all a bit of an investment so I'm hoping to get some opinions before making a choice. Thanks, ARD

I've got some terrific gloves -- goatskin on the hand part, with a long gauntlet of rough-out leather.
I think they're called "Rose Lovers" gloves -- available at large SoCal nurseries, and very very long-lasting.
Oh, and last I checked, under $30.

Ceterum, I received one of each size glove from Burnham Glove Co. You're correct about the sizes. I have average size hands. The size 13 is XXL and is way too big even for me. The size 12 is XL and still too big for me. Size 11 is Large and fits me well. Size 10 is men's small. My wife has small hands and said they fit her comfortably but I can squeeze my hand in them as they do stretch a bit. I plan in paying them a visit this spring and will see if they have like style in a smaller size for women.

It appears evident that you have experience in using chainsaws and if you have an older orchard as I do a chainsaw is an absolute necessity, even if you can afford hydraulic powered pruners. I sometimes prune from a tractor fender or ladder but admit that you should keep you feet on the ground. Use your larger saws for larger branches but I prefer the Stihl 019T for reachable branch pruning. It has a narrow chain and can be held by top or side. Mine is 10 years old and so you may find comperable newer models. For taller branches and topping Stihl has a really nice extending pole pruner to reach up to 18 feet. It may be tiring to use it so my suggestion is to rent one for a weekend to see if you want to spend the money on one. For the amount of pruning I do I can't imagine having a sizable orchard without one. The bigger mistake is to not prune enough. A chainsaw can allow you to make more accurate cuts that will heal over better. And while you are cutting you have a tool for sawing removed branches into firewood to the extent possible. Just remember that you are working with a dangerous powertool and use care.

I don't like any leather gloves.- Those spines and GLOCHIDS go through my skin and they go through leather too and then they are impossible to get out of the leather gloves. I hate ruining a good pair of leather gloves. I use newspaper, magazines , tongs, I use yellow glue on my glochids hands to get them out. I use a hair drier and then yank when the flue is dry. I also use duck tape .

I'm with Mad Gallica - you may always be wrestling with the weight of that rose, and I'd hate to see it damage your house. You might look into a freestanding arch to let it climb over, which means you can possibly contain the monster without having to cut all the canes back. If you want to reduce bloodshed and hassle, by all means it shouldn't hurt the rose, but you may not get much bloom in the next spring as a result. Michael is quite right (of course) that we aim under normal conditions to cut no more than 1/3 of the canes in a given year, and not to prune the main canes of a climber much at all, but stretch the canes sideways on the support. Obviously you're not dealing with normal circumstances however. My experiences with a freestanding Quadra may help you envision what you want from this rose. Quadra is another monster growing, very thorny climber that is hardy in our zone 5 (and beyond). I was lazy about setting up support in its first couple of years, so mine grew into the very wide bushy shrub like yours appears to be. I finally wrestled an 8' metal arch on top of Quadra and attached all the branches I could to one of the side panels without being too systematic (this took several hours and thick gloves and clothing, so brace yourself). You'll still need something to anchor the arch to the house, or the whole thing will tip over in the wind, wrecking that work tidying. However, now that I've done that work, I don't ever have to wade into Quadra to prune it other than clearing out the dead wood (if any) and encouraging new canes to fit into one side or the other of the arch. After a couple of years, it looks more like a traditional climber, once I pulled new canes to the sides, though there still are canes in the middle that fill in with blooms. Your New Dawn looks like my Quadra did when freestanding, so it's likely to work if you're game, and you can get it tidied up now. Of course, the severe pruning will save you bloodshed now if you want to go that route, but I'd still recommend something like this as you think about supports. Here's what Quadra looked like when I first wrestled it into the arch. You can't see, but it's anchored into the brick corner behind the arch with some supports my husband drilled into the brick. You can see on the left the green velcro-type strips I use to secure it to the arch in strategic places. These are available in most garden or hardware stores. I don't have a good "before" picture, but mine looked a lot like yours when I started. Good for you to be willing to work with this rose rather than just getting rid of it (not an easy prospect either). We're happy to help with ideas. Cynthia

Anything leather. The rose prickles hook themselves on the fabric ones and don't let go easily.

Though the best ones, truly, are anything you can stand wearing for long periods, and don't forget to put on. Yea verily, the unworn glove protecteth not at all.

I love the West County Rose Gauntlet. They're suede and have padding on the palm and fingertips.

I just go to Home Depot and get the cheap leather work-gloves, have several pairs stashed around the garden.. I wear the leather on my left hand and a cheap cloth glove on my right hand and when I prune and trim I can handle the clippers easily, I grab the cane with my left hand... I keep a large plastic laundry basket near-by and just toss the clippings in it with my left hand... works for me.... sally

Goatskin. I prefer Bionic or Tahoe. They aren't cheap but God only gave me two hands which cost a heckuva lot more to replace than a pair of gloves. Not all goatskin gloves are great, though. I must've gotten ahold of a thin-skinned goat this year and threw out a pair of Wells-Lamont after less than a week. Strike It Rich started the holes and Gemini finished them off...

I don't just prune my 100+ roses but also at public rose gardens so my gloves really get a workout.

These "Bionic" gloves are too good for me and i am recommending them to you just because they fulfill your requirements as well..

Made up of Cabretta leather and they are designed so ergonomically.

I have wrist/thumb issues and a thumb that is fused in a slightly bent position, like holding a soda can, and the Bionics FIT without hurting it going on. Many times I cannot find a glove to go over that thumb without fighting it, then I don't wear them cause they hurt putting on. I love my Bionics.

I finally went and bought a pair of Protector's from Bear Wallow site. I only had regular garden gloves from Walmart and leather ones I picked up at Lowes last year for $5. The leather ones were hard to feel anything in let alone make a cut, and the regular gloves are all tore up now.
I'll see how these work on William Baffin, Westerland, and Maria Stern this spring. They are a little pricey, but look like they'll protect me well without hindering me.

I recently purchased Bionic gloves from

I read the directions, and ordered a size large that fits well. The gloves do run large, and you need to measure your hand.
