70-80 egg cartons to give away
Comments (4)Molly and Velvet, sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I left on a visit to family (in Nashville, Molly!). I'd be happy to split these up between the two of you. I'll email you through gardenweb for handling details. I'm sure it will take me a few days to find boxes to hold these and then to get them to the post office. The postage should be very little since the cartons are so light. Please check your email right away so that I can get addresses....See MoreEgg cartons
Comments (2)I use egg cartons all the time :) I use both cardboard ones and foam ones also...What I do (just a suggestion) I plant my seeds in the cardboard ones, poke a drainage hole in the bottom, and place a cardboard one on top of a foam one. the foam one catches any water from the cardboard ones when i water my seeds... (Although if you have cactus seedlings you probably dont need much water!) Then when i go to plant them in the ground, i just tear off the individual cardboard "eggies" and put the whole thing right into the ground...works great for me..Good Luck! P.S. I also use aluminum foil on the bottom of my cardboard cartons, if i dont have any foam ones to catch the water :) TRISH...See MoreNo growth from paper egg cartons
Comments (7)I always use miracle grow for my seeds and usually get better plants from it than from regular potting soil. I suppose some seeds could be sensitive though, maybe just not what I grow. I'm inclined to believe your cactus aren't sprouting because those just may take forever to do so. If your seeds need light to germinate, you'd want to keep them well lit, but otherwise, some seeds won't germinate unless they are in the dark. I grow morning glories every year, but those are ones I wait to plant where they will grow after the last frost, as they are difficult to transplant. Not saying it can't be done, I just don't usually bother because its hard. I have had difficulty in the past with egg cartons because of them not being deep enough, many of my seedlings just fell over before they could make true leaves. I never used the papery ones, only the plastic. I reuse the 6 packs I buy plants in for my seeds now....See MoreFavorite Grow Trays for Chili Seedlings?
Comments (26)Was just at the biggest nursery in town looking for something else when I stopped by one of the prep stations to ask for some help. Noticed some heavy duty plastic transplant trays (well, heavy duty for your normal semi-reusable/disposable trays that is) that looked very much like the speedling trays. Only instead of being perfect pyramids they were more like the old fashioned elongated trapazoidal popsicle molds. Nice grooves down the sides, good air pruning holes in the bottom, each cell probably 2 inches by 3 inches, each try with 30 cells (5x6). Asked them if they had anything like it for sale. Said they were the empties from where one of the supliers had sent them a shipment of lilies. One employee thought the supplier wanted them back, but called the manager to see if they had anything close to it for sale. Manager said to just give me the empties. I said thank you, took the stack (only wanted one, but they gave me the full half dozen trays) and got out of there before somebody had time to change their minds. =) Can't wait for my second round of bhuts to sprout so I can put them over into one of these trays. I'll try to get pictures tonight when I get home....See Morecountrycarolyn
