70-80 egg cartons to give away

I have a bunch of previously used, washed foam egg cartons to give away. Haven't actually counted then yet, but I think there are 70 or 80. If it is worth it to you to send postage, you may have them. Or pick up if nearby. I'm in the St Louis MO metro area. Post here if you are interested, please. Am willing to split them into two or more lots, if you all advise that.

Wow, I'd be interested. What's the weight? We're in central Tennessee, and our newest batch of hens should start laying in October! Perfect timing. Of course we'd be happy to split them with someone if you have others interested.

I'd love to have some, too! However you end up splitting them up, I'll take as many as you want to send my way... :) I give my extra eggs (and there are tons *L*) to my daughter's elementary school and my neighbors, and I always need cartons.

Not really this is all I know. They sell for 12 dollars a dozen.A buck an egg. They are better for people with cancer than chicken eggs. The only places I have seen them for sale is the internet and a local organic farm. I have thought of bartering them on craigs list. You might also try sending your info along with how great they are for baking to some local bakeries or chefs.It would be easier to sell them to someone who buys them all then to try the neighbor thing.I have found that even giving them away people turn their noses up at the thought. I had that happen at church until I told them that all the items I had brought for brunches were made with duck eggs and they never knew the difference! Happy quacking!

I grew up on a chicken ranch in the 40's&50's. The big "egg factories" were introduced in the 50's. We had approximately 1400-1500 chickens at a time. The big farms have thousands.Our chickens lived in large chicken houses and we allowed them to free range for a short time whenever possible. We would only let out the hens in one house at a time. We collected eggs three times a day in metal baskets, took them to our basement where they were cleaned with a sanding block if needed, weighed and packed in crates. The PCA truck came twice a week to pick up the eggs for market. Under no circumstances were we to ever wash the eggs. That was the PCA rules. Any eggs that were not easy to clean by sanding were washed and used quickly by our family. My parents said washing meant that the life of the egg was shortened.

News flash: we are a nursery trying to be environmentally friendly. We r stuck with plastic flats and trays. We have hundreds of egg cartons. We tried them but with the heat in the nursery they dry up almost instantly. You cannot economically grow hundreds of flats in turkey roaster pans. Our nursery is packed on every shelf with flats. This is a very unfortunate that I can even believe I am saying that styrofoam egg cartons work better. What is wrong with this picture? Other nurseries struggle with similar issues. The so-called eco-friendly seed flats are made of egg cartons. They're a dollar more each, there HAS TO BE A WAY TO USE EGG CARTONS. Someone on another site suggested buying plastic silverware trays to put underneath the egg cartons bc they fit in between the slats. That may work and it may not. Growing seeds in paper towels works because they're made of trees, so are egg cartons. Someone out there has the creative juices to figure this out. I just haven't yet. I'd be grateful if they did. I don't buy eggs in styrofoam but I suppose I'd have to go dumpster diving at the dump for them if they allow you to dump styrofoam or hit craigslist. Geez we'd need a ton, but they never wear out.

I got my seeds sowed tonight. 68 8oz cups, they don't really fit under the 48'' shop light,they are hanging out the sides a bit. I had wanted to do 3 of ea tom 16 varieties. After the first few I realized they weren't going to fit and went to 2 cups w/ 2 seeds in ea. I'll thin if both germinate. I only have room to plant 1 of ea 15 plants total. I also started 5 different basil's, 4 diff sweet peppers, and a jalapeno. I think a second shop light is going to be needed to keep them all from getting leggy. I should be able to manage that before they all sprout. I winter sowed my lady lavender outside also. I didn't go w/ the styro for enviro reasons, then came home and read all the posts for styro. I think I'll go w/ styro when I pot up. I don't have them in a tray, but I think I'll use a tray to bottom water, put 'em in for about fifteen minutes as many as will fit and rotate.

Molly and Velvet, sorry I did not get back to you sooner. I left on a visit to family (in Nashville, Molly!).

I'd be happy to split these up between the two of you. I'll email you through gardenweb for handling details. I'm sure it will take me a few days to find boxes to hold these and then to get them to the post office. The postage should be very little since the cartons are so light.
