'bendy' climbers?

I am hoping to train a few climbers along fences about 5 feet tall. My concern is that the canes will grow stiff and straight up, and that the flowers will spill over onto the neighbors, leaving me without a view of the blooms.

How would these work out, or which do you recommend that are flexible enough to train almost horizontally, or have a bushy habit?

Some of the following I already have, but are not planted in the ground yet.

Thanks for looking at my post. I do garden in hot dry weather, so delicate blooms that fry in the sun are out, and I'm afraid to try singles for that reason.

I've grown many climbers on walls and chain link in the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Valleys as well as in Pacific Palisades. The first two below are the "bendiest", while Rosarium Uetersen is more difficult but works well on the same wall as the linked plant at the end of this response.

A modern climber which has performed admirably for me in both climate types is Social Climber. Good foliage, dense, nice flowers, blooms heavily, healthy.

If you want it thornless fragrant, ever blooming and are willing to wait for it to climb, take a look at a rose I raised, Annie Laurie McDowell. It's only available from Burlington Roses in Visalia and only own root. She will bloom at the expense of growing, much like Rosarium Uetersen will. This plant was budded and four years old when the photo was taken.

Rebecca, I've had Felix LeClerc for about 9 years and I echo the fantastic comments of everyone about him. He's among the first roses to bloom in late May here in zone 5, and he's totally cane hardy and pretty indestructible. It took about 4-5 years before he rebloomed very well, but now I get blooms pretty steadily into July, and scattered blooms off and on even into November. As for height, I think we'd be in the same boat being in close zones. Felix is hardy to zone 3 at least so I think you're still looking at cane hardiness. Mine is about 8' tall and he puts out laterals pretty well, so if you pull the main canes horizontally along your 8X4' trellis you should be able to get it fairly well covered after a while. Like all climbers, he takes a good 4 years to come into his own so be patient. Also, I find his canes to be pretty stiff so I wouldn't expect to do the zigzag canes you can do with more flexible climbers like Crown Princess Margaretha. You also want to make sure your trellis is pretty strong, given that those sturdy canes can pull down an average wood trellis in the wind. You didn't ask for pictures, but here's one of Felix trying (and not succeeding) to pull down a 6' fake iron (aluminum) fence. You can see that even 4' or so away from the fence he can easily reach the top. For years I didn't realize he was supposed to be a climber so I kept pruning him lower to keep him in line. Fortunately it made him bush out and he's forgiven me since. Mine was from HCR too and he's absolutely fine on his own roots. Have fun Cynthia

To do what you want to do with your father's fence, I am going to suggest once-blooming ramblers. They are the absolute best, in my opinion, for doing exactly what your father is wanting to accomplish. My Rambler Fence has Wichurana ramblers planted on it, the likes of Alberic Barbier, Francois Juranville, Aviateur Bleriot, Paul Transon, Jean Guichard, and others. The fence itself is a 4-board pasture fence with a strand of wire installed between the boards to fasten the roses to. Canes are trained horizontally and I get thousands of flowers each spring. After the roses finish their annual show of flowers, the foliage is healthy and shiny and makes a great background to the tea roses planted in front of the ramblers. Another class of ramblers to look at are the Hybrid setigeras, like Baltimore Belle, Arcata Pink Globe, Queen of the Prairies, etc. These are also healthy and vigorous, spring-blooming, and they are happiest trained horizontally and allowed to drape. During the growing season, my ramblers are extremely care free. I take any new basal canes they produce and I flip them over the fence. Every couple of years in late winter, when the roses are bare and I can see their struture really well, I thin out the oldest canes and tie the newest ones into their permanent positions. I do not spray fungicide on my ramblers, and I do not spray insecticide in the garden at all. In this area of blackspot hell, my ramblers are very resistant and look good all year long. Does it bloom more than once a year? A very common pink rambler with mildew issues is Dorothy Perkins. Dorothy would mildew with or without air circulation so don't blame yourself! You can purchase a fungicide (Immunox comes ready mixed in a spray bottle) at Home Depot if the mildew is unsightly. Dorothy will bloom profusely and grow well despite the mildew so the problem's aesthetic. You can prune to shape the bush immediately after it blooms, pruning later in the year will reduce the number of flowers produced next spring.

Good points nippstess and thank you frances and buford. I did forget about hardiness only meaning "Does the plant survive?" Our winters range from mild to cold, but I lived for years in upstate NY, Wi and Montreal, so I don't really consider it cold, but I'm not a rose! DA says it can be grown as a 6-8 fto climber if un-pruned. It's the same plant, just trained differently. I think it's possible because the canes are thin and bendy. Frances, I already got the roses from Lowe's for a stupid cheap $$$ and am trying to incorporate them in something remotely approaching 'aesthetically pleasing!' Hah! :) I really only need it to go to the bottom of the 5' window and not be totally obscured by the 'Sugar Moon' that will be placed to its left. I'm putting Heathcliff in front VQ and to the left of Sugar Moon. I'm trying to plant them out today after rigging up the deer fencing. (Not taking anymore chances) as I already amended the soil. I've waited for some more blooms on the 1st yr VQ to see how it will look. I'll post pics next yr when it matures a bit. (And I fix the concrete and paint the window trim.) Thanks for the input. Oh, and how much sun are your plants getting? Will 6hrs. be enough?

If your neighbor is on the south side of your fence, the neighbor will get a lot of the flowers. The roses grow towards the sun and because of this will bloom mostly on the sunniest side--most plants do.

No problems there, my neighbor is east of me, and my western neighbor has trees along the property line fence.

America does fine for me and never gets powdery mildew in my PM-prone yard. It is beautiful!
If you are considering America, also look at Pearly Gates, a 5 star climbing rose, IMHO.
Polka didn't bloom after spring in my yard and was removed after several years. Tons of growth, a bear to prune, and stingy with flowers in a prime spot. Dublin Bay now resides there.
