Is it possible to grow Paul's Himalayan musk in my zone?

And also have it grow to 30 feet when it matures? We usually don't get really cold winters around here, I think the coldest it got was 10 below zero F, but do you think it's possible? Also, where is a good place to buy it? I finally decided to order it from Jung seed this year, and this is the first year in a LONG time that they aren't carrying it!! :( Also if you can suggest a place that doesn't charge an arm and a leg for shipping, one site had it for only $15 dollars, but they wanted over 14 for S/H!

Then I was going to order it from rosesunlimited.com and they don't seem to have a way to order plants on their website! Or am I just not seeing the link?

Ok, sorry I am stupid. I found on the rosesunlimited site that they can't take web orders. Duh!

So, it isn't that difficult to order from RU, you just have to call or send an e-mail. They don't accept credit cards in any case.

I have four (FOUR) plants of Paul's Himalayan Musk--can you guess that it's easy to root? Three are growing alongside the wood and one is on a hostile slope of packed gray clay, well mulched, serving as a foster mother for oak seedlings. At four and a half years old they're getting well started. PHM is fragrant, nice and sweet, and I do believe is going to make a fine show, if it doesn't tear the elm wood down. I'm waiting for my plants to get like Florence's. Cl. CB is growing from cuttings and will be planted out in the fall. What a thing it is to have room for climbers. Melissa

I grow PHM on the North wall, so he should not have an issue with it. The caution though, PHM is a big rose. And by that, I mean it, as I am going to try and sort out a mess of its 6 meter long canes and 3 meter long laterals (he is still 3 year old baby btw). x) You also need a moisture for its scent, so if you climate is very dry, he probably won't have any smell - but in the moist air, it drifts across the garden with ease. Gertrude Jekyll I don't know about, Gloire de Dijon might not look that nice color wise, as PHM is pink and GdD is orangey-peach (shade tolerant though). Also it is a bit leggy and aparently has issues when grown own root, not grafted. The scent of GdD is very lovely though. If you like musk scent, why not to try one of the other hybrid musks in the middle? Most of them rebloom.

I compost them and often mix them in the planting hole for the organic effect. I shred them with my mulching mower and leave them in the lawn. I've never seen any allelopathic effect on any of the plants they were used near or on. Actually they seem to help the plants.

I have one that is going on it's second winter. Seems hardy here.I don't remember it having any die back. I think I either got mine at vintage or rogue valley.

Be sure wherever you buy it that what they are selling is truly Paul's Himalayan Musk Rambler. The blooms should be light pink. There is at least one well known nursery that is selling a plant with pure white blooms as Paul's Himalayan Musk and it clearly isn't. The plant they are selling is a very nice once-bloomer, but it just isn't what they claim.

Phil, can you tell me what the white rambler is? I'm afraid I have this one and not the correct Paul, then.

Mine blooms once and is white. If I remember correctly, it came from Wayside years ago.

Terry, I posted last year trying to get an identity for Wayside's PHM, nobody seems to know what it is. After it bloomed the first time for me, I ended up posting a note on hmf that wayside has the wrong rose. Hopefully, at least some people who purchase it will see that before they buy. Unfortunately too many people don't know about hmf who receive Wayside's catalog. Eventually, it is going to cause alot of confusion. While I like the rambler well enough I guess, it wasn't what I was looking forward to. Just another reason of many I don't order from them anymore. Mine is hardy in zone 5a where it gets to minus 20 sometimes. It's only been in the ground for two years and it gets quite large. I get some dieback but in your area it should be OK.

Carriehelene, I quit buying from Wayside a couple of years ago because they sent me some tiny hostas and heucheras twice in a row; so tiny they didn't have a chance to survive. I won't buy from them anymore...period. I didn't know about HMF when I first started adding roses to my garden.

So I wonder what we have masquerading as Paul? Some years mine doesn't bloom at all, but it is getting very tall and hard to control. It's trying to scramble up a wild cherry tree and is probably 15' tall right now.

Yes, I was talking about the one from Wayside. I wish I knew what it is, but I don't. I have seen an established plant blooming and it is spectacular. It is just covered with tiny white blooms. However, it is not Paul's Himalayan Musk Rambler.

Those of you that have this mystery white rembler, is it very fragrant? Felicite-Perpetue is supposed to have a strong musk fragrance.

I don't recall any fragrance, but I'll take particular note this spring. Since we had -22F temps for a couple of days, it may have a lot of dieback and not bloom, so it may take it a couple of years to rebound.
