I grow PHM on the North wall, so he should not have an issue with it. The caution though, PHM is a big rose. And by that, I mean it, as I am going to try and sort out a mess of its 6 meter long canes and 3 meter long laterals (he is still 3 year old baby btw). x) You also need a moisture for its scent, so if you climate is very dry, he probably won't have any smell - but in the moist air, it drifts across the garden with ease.

Gertrude Jekyll I don't know about, Gloire de Dijon might not look that nice color wise, as PHM is pink and GdD is orangey-peach (shade tolerant though). Also it is a bit leggy and aparently has issues when grown own root, not grafted. The scent of GdD is very lovely though.

If you like musk scent, why not to try one of the other hybrid musks in the middle? Most of them rebloom.

Large-growing and making a show in bloom, but getting blotched with downy mildew and looking shabby the rest of the growing season afterward. I've already grown it for a time and then jerked it once before. My current, second specimen is planted to combine with the foliage of a purple-leaved plum, this does look good.

But it has also gotten all over a weeping Katsura tree and will spoil it if not cut out of it this year.

And there is still those blotchy leaves all summer...

Over here PMH does not get that much of mildew, certainly much less than Madame Alfred Cariere next to it. What seems to be a case with MAC, she like water, loads of it. If it is too dry, she mildews pretty badly and PHM joins her sometimes late in the season. It does not affect PHM at all it seems, but as standout rose it may be a sore if the climate supports mildew.

Thank you very much. Water is not a problem here in the PNW and in my corner of it (on top of Chehalem mountain (1500 ft) we get 60+ inches a year. BUT the summers are usually bone dry (though I have a well and lots of water) and bboy grows in my area. I have a Madame Gregoire Stachelin that mildews awfully, although the sheltered spot where it grows does not have the excellent ventilation of the spot where I propose to put PHM.

What other large repeat fragrant climbers could you suggest? Mlle Cecile Brunner has not done well for me.

From what I grow, Etoile de Hollande, Ghislaine de Feligonde, Elfe climber (very healthy here, but modern, not too big), New Dawn (very popular for a reason, love this rose, not too big), Pink Cloud (not very large, but pretty), Sombreuil (aka Colonial White, seems to be on par with PHM in size), Sympathie (best red climber imho, can be slow to start but blooms almost continuously here, not sure about disease in your place though).

Then there are Kathleen Harrop/Zephirine Drouhin. Foliage is an issue in some climates, here my Kathleen stays more or less clean.

Then there are once blooming wichuranas, Paul's Scarlet Climber and Constance Spry which are really good roses, although once blooming. Also Kiftsgate has the most amazing hips ever in the autumn, wish I had a space for him.

Yes, water is in fact quite a problem here because unlike most other places (including The Netherlands) it disappears right in the middle of the growing season.

At 1500' in Oregon you're not going to be able to keep 'Climbing Cecile Brunner' and most other roses of the modern persuasion - not chosen specifically with extra hardiness in mind - without winter protection every time it drops below 10-15 degrees F.

The mildew on 'Paul's' here is not powdery mildew, it's downy mildew. Many probably mistake this for black spot.

Powdery mildew is the result of susceptible plants getting too dry at the root in summer. Pacific coastal summer combination of dried out soil and summer fog is perfect for foliage mildews.
